Great for teaching kindness submitted by sbombery on July 26, 2016, 8:27pm This book is great for teaching kindness, tolerance, and servitude to young children.

Beautiful, but not attention-grabbing submitted by FordAlpha on July 11, 2018, 10:57pm As a picture book, this was an unusual choice for the 2016 Newbery Award; it seemed a more likely choice for the Caldecott (and indeed received a Caldecott Honor). Both the text and the illustrations are beautifully done, but very quiet. Like the grandmother in the story, they only gently call attention to the small, beautiful things in a crowded urban environment; they don't grab attention or force-feed the message. The book easily could have been didactic and preachy, but it's not. Although it teaches kindness and empathy and respect for others in every walk of life, it's not likely to attract kids for frequent readings.

Deserves Its Accolades submitted by Meginator on August 28, 2020, 6:15pm This delightful book follows a boy and his grandmother as they ride the bus one weekend afternoon. The illustrations are deceptively complex, with simple lines and bright colors that match the text’s inquisitive tone and a surprising amount of detail for their seemingly simple style. The core story revolves around compassion, but never in a way that is overly preachy; the message is clear but emerges naturally as the characters observe and interact with the world around them. What a wonderful, nuanced book; I’m glad I read it, and I think readers of all ages can appreciate it.

Great submitted by manz on August 27, 2021, 8:46am This is a perfect picture book.

Amazing submitted by czadams on August 28, 2022, 6:46pm Beautiful story! I love that they wrote a story about riding a bus. Many other children's stories dont show this kind of transportation. I like that this is more inclusive of different economic status' and lifestyles. The pictures are cute too.

Teaches values without preaching submitted by Diananana on August 20, 2023, 4:10pm I like this book because it demonstrates important values without being preachy. I like how the illustrations blend so well with the text. I like it because the grandmother is called Nana and she rides the bus, two things we have in common. As a retired cataloger, I wish I could add to the subject headings assigned to this book. Buses, Grandmothers, City and town life and African Americans are all descriptive of this book. They focus on concrete concepts. Most children's books would probably not get that many. But if I could, I would add Kindness, Generosity, and Social integration, which has a cross reference from Social inclusion (not that you will see any cross references in the AADL catalog, alas). The bus is the vehicle that drives the story, both literally and figuratively. It's the people inside it that carry the message. It is the winner of the 2016 Newbery Medal (author) and a 2016 Caldecott Honor book (illustrator).
