Teach your child to read submitted by Alliemayzee on August 2, 2014, 9:57am My 3.5 year old daughter and I have been enjoying this book together. There are very few pictures, and it is a lot like school, but she has been very interested to "read" it with me. We aren't taking it too seriously, but she has asked me to teach her how to read so we checked this out. We started about halfway through, and have found it to be educational and exciting :) She is thrilled when she reads the words correctly! I think this is a helpful book and would definitely recommend it.
Interesting Approach
submitted by Kara Marsee on November 16, 2016, 12:53pm
This is a well-researched method for teaching reading.
It doesn't teach "letters" it teaches "sounds". Reading the intro and all the explanations of how to approach this is very important. Because English is so weird and has so many different sounds for different letters, it has different "symbols" for different sounds, so you and the child know exactly what "sound" to make. For example, the "e" has a line over it so that you know how to say it. The logic is, by the end of the program, the symbols are removed, but the child still knows how to say it because they've seen it so many times.
Also it treats silent letters visually differently, and has a writing and reading comprehension component.
I like that it's a no-brainer. The parent's "teaching" is all scripted in the book. Of course, I don't follow it exactly, but it's nice to have a framework. Also it's great to schedule one-on-one time with my child (6yrs). We started at the beginning even though it was easy for him because I like to give him positive feelings about this. I think it's good for self-esteem to start where it's easy.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
Confusing submitted by gracekil on June 13, 2023, 3:08pm I found it confusing, as it just goes on and on from one set of sounds without a break to the next, without a new title or explanation.
