The Tudors submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 28, 2013, 5:33pm "The Other Queen" is the story of Mary, Queen of Scots, whom Catholics in England fought to make their nation's queen. During one of Mary's military campaigns, Queen Elizabeth I of England (her cousin) captured Mary and put her in the custody of George Talbot, who bankrupted himself trying to keep Mary in style.
As in many of her historical novels, Philippa Gregory bases her work on painstaking research, but also takes poetic license. She portrays some of the characters in a way most historians do not, such as painting Talbot's wife, Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury, as a savvy businesswoman, rather than money-grubbing social climber.
There are parts of this novel that are disturbing, such as how Gregory portrays rape. However, her books are a great way to learn about British history.
