Klosterman On the Road submitted by Caser on November 2, 2010, 5:32pm I read both of Rob Sheffield's books just before picking up this Klosterman man-on-a-journey book, so comparisons are inevitable. Sheffield writes for Rolling Stone, and Klosterman for Spin magazine, though when it comes to the bands they talk most about in their books, it's actually a bit of a music genre reversal, with the author of Killing Yourself to Live writing mostly about KISS and other classic rock bands (RS bows to Dylan and Beatles), and Sheffield more of an indie idealist (meh, sometimes Spin does this). Fittingly, though they both talk about women and sexual relationships even more than the actual music they like, Klosterman tends toward the brash, self-deprecating, rock n roll descriptions of his relationships, whereas the Love is a Mix Tape author wears his heart on his sleeve. Both are entertaining writers with a nuanced sense of music and pop culture and how it shapes who we become as adults, and I, for one, would love to sit down with both of them and talk music sometime.
