Interesting exploration of self-discovery submitted by mrajraspn08 on June 19, 2014, 1:17pm A fascinating story that will make you think and leave you eager to explore. I had never heard about this man and his story, but afterwards, I had to look it up. The story is a little dry, especially compared to the movie, but still interesting.

I really wanted to like this.... submitted by llamahope on July 12, 2014, 6:02pm So I really wanted to like this book as it was a tale of finding oneself, but there were numerous times I wanted to just shake the main character for being so selfish and foolish in his disregard for those who cared about him and how to survive when having an adventure. Worth the read, but frustrating at times.

the wild submitted by hcf on August 2, 2014, 5:08pm i was really interested in this memoir by mccandless

4 of 5 stars. submitted by cullerth on July 11, 2018, 10:01pm This is a tale worth revisiting every few years to see where you stand. When I first read it in high school I was nothing but inspired by Chris McCandless' eschewing of society and journey of self discovery in the Alaskan wilderness. I dismissed all criticisms about his selfish fool hardiness.

"But it's that brashness that makes this a story worth telling, isn't it? That's why we're discussing it right now, correct?" - I remember arguing with my English IV teacher. *hard eye roll @ younger me now*

The older I get the more I take to heart Chris McCandless' final message as the real moral here: "Happiness is only real when shared." Everyone seems to forget that that's the conclusion his wanderings led him to. That that's the mantra he didn't get the chance to mature into.

This is a book that will give you a lot to think about long after you've set it aside.

Well written book about self-exploration submitted by abicoll on July 18, 2019, 5:55pm Krakauer throughly explores the psyche of Chris's personality and motivations, and his personal experiences with wilderness make him the perfect author for this book. He turns a rather frustrating protagonist into someone I could empathize with.

Great subject matter submitted by wilcomea on July 19, 2022, 3:11pm This was an interesting read, but it was slow at times. I loved getting to know more about Chris's story.
