Good Idea, Bland Execution submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:58pm This picture book does a nice job of inhabiting the main character’s mind, but the story itself simply isn’t interesting enough to carry the book; the characters don’t have any dimensionality to them and the illustrations can’t make up for a fundamental lack of substance in the writing. The idea of a basset hound receiving a kitten for Christmas, and being baffled by its behavior, is solid enough, but is somehow completely uninteresting; the plot has no flow to it and the jokes fall rather flat. This book might work for readers who are exceptionally interested in animals or farmhouse settings, but it just didn’t come together for me.
