Welcome to Ankh....whoops London submitted by Pumpkinscones on June 25, 2013, 3:07pm This is not a Discworld book but fans of Pratchett will find little snippets of London life in Dodger that wormed their way into A-M and even give a little history – Tuppence a bucket, well-stamped down.
It doesn't hold the one-off witticisms that a Discworld novel has, but is a comfortable and fun read.
Pratchett fans should enjoy Dodger as it joins his growing lexicon of 'outside' books, such as The Nation (which is probably better than this). Fans of 'Flashman' and other 'historical reimaginism' novels should check this out, as should anyone into the Les Mis sewer scenes or Gaiman's Neverwhere.

not discworld submitted by unknown on July 30, 2013, 2:48pm I wanted to write something pithy;commentary that confirmed to all readers that I have been a committed fan of Mr Pratchett for a very long time now. But I've just done that - albeit sans pith.
So I'll just call it as I found it:

Its a 'nice' read. Not so much a 'whodunnit' as a 'come along for the ride and let's see what happens in this new world of Mr Pratchett's devising.' Not laugh out loud funny, but certainly worthy of the occasional smile. The historical liberties taken are both gentle and generally useful. I've read many of Mr Pratchett's books time and time again. Would I re-read this one? Most likely not... but I'm happy enough to have read it the once.

A romp of a book submitted by LibraryMaven on June 19, 2014, 8:46pm A romp of a book, Dodger takes readers to the world of an early Victorian tosher (someone who makes a living from the sewers.) However, Dodger is no ordinary tosher and when, on a rainy night, he saves a young women of quality from a beating he is catapulted into a series of events that bring him into contact with many of the notable personalities of the day, including a very sharp man named Charlie Dickens. Pratchett’s novel defies genre, but is perhaps best described as a historical fantasy, since many of his characters are real historical personages but he does not adhere to a strict timeline, while the novel as a whole has more than a whiff of Oliver Twist. For curious readers, an endnote describing what parts of the novel are historically based is included, though this is not a novel to go to for historical accuracy. Pratchett’s sense of humor comes through strongly, and makes Dodger palatable to readers who might ordinarily shy away from romance, and the plot moves quickly. That being said, this is very clearly not a Discworld novel (as mentioned in other reviews) and as such provides both a nice diversion for confirmed Pratchett fans as well as a convenient entry point for new readers who don't want to dive into the forty-odd Discworld books now published.
