Foreword / John B. Henry III -- Flint Institute of Arts: The American Painting and Sculpture Collection / William H. Gerdts -- Catalogue.
"Celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Flint Institute of Arts, one of the cultural jewels of the Midwest, this volume is a comprehensive analysis of 130 of the most important works of American art from the museum's permanent collection. Spanning more than two centuries of artistic production in the United States, this catalogue highlights the exceptional quality and depth of the museum's holdings and serves as an important reference for the scholar and the general reader alike.".
"An overview of the stunning array of treasures reveals representation of many of the important advancements in the history of American art. Outstanding masterworks include a marsh scene by Martin Johnson Heade, a portrait of her sister at a loom by Mary Cassatt, the famous study for an outdoor portrait of the Vickers children by John Singer Sargent, a Newport harbor scene by Childe Hassam, and William Zorach's Spirit of the Dance, a sculpture that was initially conceived for Radio City Music Hall.
The earliest piece of American art is an historical work by Benjamin West painted in 1796. Later pieces represent naive art by many of the well-known painters, as well as a significant group of Tonalist works.
Two other areas of strength within the collection are Abstract Expressionism, which includes works by Adolph Gottlieb, Lee Krasner, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler and Willem de Kooning, and Contemporary Realism, with works by Wayne Thieband, Ralph Goings, Fairfield Porter, Philip Pearlstein, Jack Beal, and Richard Maury, among others."--BOOK JACKET.
