Funny Travelogue submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 2:09am I always enjoy J. Maarten Troost's rambling, exaggerated and hilarious experiences in exotic locales and this was no exception. This time, Troost was traveling rather than living for an extended period of time in a remote location, but he still manages to give the reader a fully entertaining overview of his China experience.

Whether bemoaning the tremendous pollution, getting shoved out of the way of pushy grandmothers or experiencing the highs and lows of Chinese travel, Troost gives a glimpse of the social and cultural history of the region as well as his (sometimes) good-natured perception of the situation.

He always manages to incorporate eye-opening details into his descriptions of everyday life, and this, combined with his humorous incredulity, elevates his books from good travelogues to to irresistible travel memoirs.
