"Kate Atkinson's dazzling Life After Life explored the possibility of infinite chances and the power of choices, following Ursula Todd as she lived through the turbulent events of the last century over and over again. A GOD IN RUINS tells the dramatic story of the 20th century through Ursula's beloved younger brother Teddy--would-be poet, heroic pilot, husband, father, and grandfather--as he navigates the perils and progress of a rapidly changing world. After all that Teddy endures in battle, his greatest challenge is living in a future he never expected to have" -- provided by publisher.

Good follow up submitted by Lucy S on June 13, 2015, 2:54pm Though I didn't like this as much as Life After Life I was still swept up in the story of Ursula Todd's younger brother Teddy. Atkinson does an admirable job in switching back and forth in time and character so that we don't know which truth is the real one until the end. Wonderfully written.

Companion Book submitted by zornm on June 16, 2015, 2:55pm I have to agree with the first reviewer, this was a bit of a disappointment after the fantastic Life after Life or even any of the Jackson Brodie series. It took me a long time to be caught up in Teddy's life story. In a way I wanted him to have a happier life, especially after the horrors he suffered in World War II. (These chapters are the strongest in the novel). There is a real disconnect between how lovely he is and how appalling his only child is. However, Atkinson is such a gifted writer that you are carried along and at the end have a hard time saying goodbye to these characters.

Re-do submitted by Sunny29 on June 16, 2017, 9:21am I picked this up shortly after reading Life After Life and I was also a bit disappointed. Her style of switching characters and timeframes kept me interested in "Life" but I had a hard time sinking my teeth into it. Truth be told, I returned it without finishing it but would definitely give it another shot.

Another good book... submitted by k8kdelaney on June 25, 2018, 9:28pm This is a related, but not really sequel, book to Life After Life. Especially good if you are interested in or have knowledge of WWII fighter pilot histories.
