"A fourth-generation German-American now living in easy circumstances on Cape Cod (and smoking too much), who, as an American infantry scout hors de combat, as a prisoner of war, witnessed the fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany, "The Florence of the Elbe," a long time ago, and survived to tell the tale. This is a novel somewhat in the telegraphic schizophrenic manner of tales of the planet Tralfamadore, where the flying saucers come from. Peace."
Billy Pilgrim returns home from the Second World War only to be kidnapped by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore, who teach him that time is an eternal present.

A classic submitted by scooterpie on July 25, 2011, 2:35pm This book is not only a classic science-fiction novel, but a classic work of American fiction. Vonnegut's recollection of the Dresden bombings is both horrifying and enlightening. His anti-war sentiments and unique observations about trauma, time, and aging in a modern world are all still relevant today. This is a timless narrative about the contemporary human condition, especially as it pertains to war.

Poignant submitted by inewton on August 20, 2018, 3:00pm This book is heart breaking and hilarious at the same time, and is totally captivating in both of its historical and fictional elements. It will stay on your mind long after you finish reading

Slaughterhouse Five submitted by srussel on June 29, 2020, 7:36pm I found it a bit hard to read, but once I understood the premise a bit more it really kept me thinking.

quirky in the best way submitted by jklaben on June 26, 2023, 6:02pm This is a very absurd and quirky novel, but the style contributes to the theme very well. A great example of postmodern literature.
