Pulled me in submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 21, 2015, 8:32pm This one pulled me in. It's about two young men in Russia during WWII. While a bit dark and depressing (it was a time of chaos and deprivation), the characters and their quest were compelling. I loved all the little details that made the book feel real.
Good but predictable submitted by sushai on June 30, 2019, 7:25am It was a good read and would've gotten five stars if the fate of every major character wasn't immediately decipherable. I would have appreciated a little less cliche and predictability. It almost felt like it was written for the blockbuster movie script the author had hoped it would become.
Dark, but also incredibly funny submitted by TeacherN on July 26, 2019, 8:13pm I loved this book! It takes a horrible situation, the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, and somehow makes it funny. I found it to be incredibly clever and not at all cliche or predictable. Highly, highly recommended!
Eck. No. submitted by smgop on July 30, 2020, 9:37pm Not my cup of tea - probably because the author really portrayed the depravity of crass Russian thieves. Too many expletives.
Heartbreaking, fascinating, beautiful submitted by sedmanfam on July 11, 2023, 3:18pm For some reason, the narrative in this boom reminds me of the feelings I got the last time I read a Faulkner novel, maybe because of the particular local colloquial curses reminded me of Faulkner’s word puttogethers (neologisms?) and the heart rending story of friendship found between two very different individuals. There was heartbreak in almost every chapter that detailed the desolation, tragic cruelty of war, and the cold comfort of small pleasures in the most extreme situations that Kolya and Lev found. Honestly, I listened to the book, read by Ron Perlman, whose voice was wonderful to listen to.
