enjoyable, flawed

A warning: this book contains a code that the reader is encouraged to solve, but there is a misprint making it impossible! On page 66, there is a coded message that is later decoded while the reader looks over the shoulder of the main character, but enough clues are given for the reader to solve it first. Unfortunately, in the first word U has been substituted for V (FUWXU should instead be FVWXV). Later in the book the code is rewritten as the main character solves it, with the Vs correctly written. I was pretty annoyed by this.
Other than that, it was an interesting twist on 17th century history, of fictional hidden reasons for well-known historical occurrences. I'm not sure if I was just reading it when I was too tired, but I was always having to go back to re-read to pick up the significance of a place name that I had forgotten. So take notes as you go? Or read it in one long sitting?
(Odd, but perhaps relevant to one of our library's copies: during the week that I read it, I had terrible dry skin on my fingertips which has since disappeared. Was there something on the pages that got on my fingers as I turned them?)
