In the 12th-century Benedictine monastery of Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael has settled down to a quiet life in charge of the herbarium. It is fortunate his prowess as a herbalist is matched by his detective skills - when his prior acquires the bones of a saint, the obstacles include murder.

A good start to a excellent mystery series submitted by mhastings on July 9, 2013, 11:19am Ellis Peters' A Morbid Taste for Bones is a good start to the Brother Cadfael mystery series. While the other novels are set in or around the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, this novel mostly takes place on a pilgrimage to Wales. Despite the alternate setting from the other books in the series, this book sets up the primary characters, especially Cadfael, sub-prior Richard and Jerome. Unlike many mystery series, this book, like the others in Peters' series, are not to be read quickly, but rather slowly enjoyed at a pace more typical of the 12th century the characters inhabit. The description of life in 12th century England and Wales is as enjoyable as the mystery itself. If you enjoy historic fiction and mystery, this is a good start to a great series.
good start to a good series submitted by kathscot on July 3, 2016, 6:19pm It takes a little while to catch the pace of these books, but it is worth the effort. An interesting story, a peek at 12th century life and Cadfael is a wonderful character.
