wonderful, fun submitted by 21621031390949 on July 9, 2011, 11:01am This is a wonderfully fun book. It's the story of a young man, his child, and his dying wife, told through the eyes of his dog. The man races cars and the dog shares this love. Somewhat humorous, but also definitely thoughtful and philosophical. The book particularly appeals to dog lovers and car racing lovers, I suppose, but I would think anyone would enjoy it.

So sweet! submitted by klsyking on July 19, 2011, 11:39am I absolutely loved this book. It made me look at my pets completely differently (and also want a dog). Told from the point of view of the family dog, a beloved pet recounts his master's life through hardship and happiness. I'm not a huge animal person, but I found it really touching. Though, I have to warn you that it's got some really sad parts. I listened to the book on tape and was crying a little at work. I highly recommend it, though!!!

Sweet submitted by wendylv on August 31, 2012, 7:19pm I resisted starting this book because I thought the dog-narrator idea was too gimmicky. But by chapter 3 I was hooked. I loved the racing metaphors and found many sweet nuggets of wisdom in this touching story.

Beautiful story submitted by krayla on June 15, 2013, 8:14pm Although this book has some sad parts, overall it is an uplifting and inspiring story for pet owners and animal lovers. It shows the irreplaceable bond between a man and his best friend, a dog he's had since before he was married. Some might argue that this book is only for racing fans, but I still loved it despite my lack of interest in the subject. Garth Stein makes racing into a philosophy, into a way of life that is understood even by Enzo the dog. The most original aspect is that the narrative is from Enzo's perspective, which puts life and aging into a very interesting light.

Dog Lover? submitted by unknown on April 29, 2014, 8:42am If you love dogs you will love this book

This book was recommended because I want a dog submitted by ccrose on August 30, 2019, 11:44am Most dog books make me cry because something happens to the dog. I can’t stand that! But this one helped me see how a unconditionally loving sentient being is a great part of family making.

Must Read! submitted by pamhockey25 on August 27, 2020, 11:25am I loved the movie and loved the book. The book has a few elements that the movie didn't have. Beautifully written, loved having the book told from the perspective of the dog. Enzo, the dog, is intelligent and insightful. I'm a race fan and really enjoyed the racing aspect of the book as well. Highly recommended.

An Absolutely Beautiful Book! submitted by mickplu on June 16, 2023, 7:09am Told through the eyes of a pet dog, this is a heartwarming story of love and devotion. Warning: it can also be quite sad at times.

The Love of Dogs submitted by JJM.Deucher on August 15, 2023, 7:33am In the specific genre of sad dog books. A read for dog lovers and a story of the complexities and heartbreak of love, loss, and family.
