Not A Princess-ey Story! submitted by sdunav on June 17, 2013, 3:03pm This is a sequel to Hale's award-winning YA book Princess Academy (which was not about princesses so much, but education, social class, empowerment, etc.), but I think it would work ok as a stand-alone read.

Like Princess Academy, this story starts out somewhat simply and (you think) predictably....and then completely turns your expectations on their heads. I loved it.

This story does have a princess in it (not the heroine, though), as well as scholars, revolutionaries, and wonderful discussions of politics and ethics. Since there really isn't any sex, and the violence is subdued, I think this book would be great for kids (mostly girls) ages 10+. Younger readers may not get as much out of it as older ones, but the plot revelations, complex characters, and detailed medieval-style fantasy world will be good for them. Definitely recommended.

Engaging submitted by Fishing Rainbow on August 24, 2014, 3:06pm Personally it think it is better than the first book , and it is much more exciting! Couldn't stop reading it.

An excellent second book submitted by echternk on June 16, 2017, 3:32pm Most trilogies have a book 2 that is sort of meh.

This series has a second book that is just as good as the first, and the world and characters grow in a way that leaves you excited to read the third book. I could say more, but the other reviewers covered it!

A class in social class submitted by cannonsr on July 22, 2017, 8:48pm Great for thinking through the internal journeys when you leave home.

Palace of Stone submitted by Varshini on July 22, 2019, 10:14am Another great book by Shannon Hale! I wasn’t sure at first, but this is a really good sequel to Princess Academy.

The Palace of Stone submitted by maria.wyche on June 12, 2020, 5:54pm This sequel picks up with Miri coming to Asland. When she arrives she finds herself caught up in a dangerous uprising, and she finds herself forced to choose who she will side with. She also must sort out her complicated feelings about her home, who she is and where she belongs.

This is a really good read and a great sequel to Princess Academy.

Excellent sequel submitted by kathscot on August 30, 2020, 3:15pm Miri must grow and make difficult choices when she goes to the palace for her best friend's marriage to the prince. Agree with other reviewers. Nice look at unintended consequences, too.
