COMMUNITY REVIEWS
God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man submitted by leighsprauer on August 24, 2016, 12:20pm This book is half-memoir, half-enthnography of the Geechee people of Sapelo Island, Georgia. The author recounts events from her childhood which serve to explain the history and culture of the African-American community there. Bailey is a professional story-teller, but not a professional writer; the tone was disjointed and not fluid at times (for example, she sometimes wrote using idioms, and sometimes in standard English - it would have flowed better to have chosen one style), but the descriptions of her culture were fascinating and worth the read. A visit to Sapelo is now on my bucket list because of this book and I'd be interested to read more about the Geechee culture.
