The thirteen-year-old daughter of an English country knight keeps a journal in which she records the events of her life, particularly her longing for adventures beyond the usual role of women and her efforts to avoid being married off.

This book is great. submitted by jtseng232 on June 23, 2011, 6:17pm This book, 'Catherine, Called Birdy,' is about a thirteen-year old girl whose dad wants to ship her off to ugly, smelly, and disgusting suitors for money. Luckily, she manages to hold off all of the suitors except one. The last one, apparently, is the most "revolting," disgusting, and worst-loking suitor of them all. Unfortunately, he is also the richest. This book is high-paced, and very good. Reccomendable for all ages.

Not good submitted by Memoria1224 on July 17, 2012, 3:33pm This is a really bad book. I read it in a reading group at school and it's boring. It's not interesting at all.

Worth reading submitted by kathscot on July 21, 2013, 8:34pm books you have to read at school are always worse than when you read them on your own. This is a funny and interesting book. You learn a lot about the Middle Ages.

Growing Up In the Gross Ages submitted by Sara W on August 21, 2015, 10:11am Catherine is the daughter of a minor knight in medieval Britain. This is her awesome diary. The story is told in her own brutally honest voice, and her attitude and issues are extremely relatable, even though they are coupled with less-relatable complaints about having fleas and soiled rushes on the floor. Catherine is 13 and her father is ready to marry her off, but she uses her wits and her sense of humor to stave off some of the worst of the suitors. This is a great book, and the creation of Catherine as such a well-drawn and sympathetic character, is a medieval miracle.
