I read Eloise at Christmas and Olivia helps with Christmas every December to my girls, more for myself than anyone else, because they really put me in the Christmas spirit!

Nice Visual Humor submitted by Meginator on June 21, 2023, 11:26pm Whereas the first Olivia book is a bit of a disappointment, this slice of life story is filled with clever visual gags that are perfect for the holiday season. Accompanied by simple text that itself makes for a good read-aloud experience, the pictures carry the weight of the humor, using splashes of color and fold-out pages to excellent humorous effect with a keen sense of irony coming from the interactions between the words and the illustrations. None of the individual anecdotes are particularly novel in the Christmas picture book circuit, but together they have a nice sense of holiday mischief about them that helps to develop the characters and illustrate their relationships to one another; Falconer manages to create a good sense of (barely) controlled chaos that will be familiar to anyone who has been around (or, indeed, part of) a group of children celebrating the Christmas season. This works well as a standalone holiday book and proves that there just may be more to this series than its disappointing debut effort suggests.
