A Super Read! submitted by manz on January 20, 2011, 10:44am I loved this book! A fictionalized bio of the great poet Pablo Neruda, the books tells the story of his childhood as the dreamingest boy, with a father trying to turn off his imagination so he can focus on real things, like a future in medicine or business. But at age 8 he is more concerned with wonderful things like reading all day and exploring the outside world.

Neftalí Reyes (Neruda's real name) spends his young boyhood days collecting things... shells, sticks, stones, and other useful trinkets. He keeps his collections in his room and he adores them. He is often off wandering and exploring, telling stories, and dreaming. Every small thing is a huge adventure to his sponge of a brain. His imagination is a million miles wide and neverending!

The prose in the story is wonderful and evokes imagery that is real and provoking, and the illustrations add that extra bit of wonder to keep the story flowing down a winding stream. It is a wonderful companion to the existing poetry of Neruda himself. The Dreamer is a wonderful book about childhood imagination, and about following your dreams no matter who tries to stop you.

The Dreamer submitted by SBNB on June 23, 2023, 11:51am This book is about the childhood of famous poet Pablo Neruda. It is well written and interesting, though his father’s treatment of him was hard to stomach at times.
