Construction Closure - Downtown Library Closed for Approximately Two Weeks

by TimG

The Downtown Library will be closed beginning Friday, May 29 due to the Front Porch Construction Project. The length of the closure is undetermined at this time but estimated at two weeks. The front entry doors and all of the concrete on the current porch to the north are being replaced during this phase of the project. In addition, carpeting is being replaced on two floors and several collections are being shifted to allow for growth in the collection. The public stairway is also being sanded and painted, and a new programming space is being outfitted in the Lower Level. We realize how inconvenient this is for the hundreds of people who use the Downtown Library each day, but it will be a much better environment from the outside in when the work is completed. We hope that you will continue to use the Library at one of the four branch locations while Downtown is closed.

In expectation of the closure, no Library items are due after May 29 and before June 12, however, the Downtown Library dropbox on William Street will be available. Downtown Library hold items will be available at Traverwood Branch at opening on Friday, May 29.

Book donations to the FAADL, usually made at the loading dock off William Street, cannot be accepted on May 29, 30, or 31.

Can we assume that books/materials won't be available to be delivered to branches from the downtown library, during this time? Thanks.

Just saw when I went to check the catalog that the answer to this question is yes, no deliveries to branches during the construction.

I have a book being held will it be extended to the reopening?
Thanks
Linda Kelleher

nskarp - Yes and No. Items returned to branches or downtown will fill holds and be delivered to their pickup location. Any items on shelves at locations other than downtown will also be pulled and delivered to pickup location. However, items on the shelves downtown won't be pulled as staff will have limited access with all the different projects going on, especially the carpeting and shifting.

kelleher - Items previously held downtown are currently being held at the Traverwood branch for pickup while Downtown is closed. However, they are extended till past the closure if you can't make it to Traverwood. Feel free to call (734) 327-4200 if you have any specific questions about your holds.

Ruth,

You are incorrect. The closure Downtown has absolutely no affect on acquisitions and cataloging. Please check the new item lists in the catalog and you'll see items added this week.

Regards,

Josie

Ruth,

The staff are working in the building doing many things that are difficult to do when a library is open. We are completing an inventory of the collection, and that will make your catalog experience even better in the near future.

Josie

jsbiteen,

You can return it to a branch, but you may also keep it until the Downtown reopens. Due dates are extended, so there is no risk of fines.

Hope you had a good time playing!

Josie

Is there an update on the timeline for reopening (understanding that it's still an estimate)? Since we're in the second of the two weeks mentioned, does it look likely that the building will reopen next week?

The Downtown Library will reopen by next week, but we are still not sure of the exact date. We are hoping sooner rather than later. Thanks so much for your patience.

wow

I missed the downtown branch more than I thought I might! Absence indeed makes the heart grow fonder.
