There was once a small little place named Silvesteria where there was no crime nothing bad had ever happened but either people or location they always have their secrets. Yet all of this was about to change when two investigators named Payton and Braiden would come and help out the curious town’s people. This town was so secluded it wasn't even on the map the mayor had made sure that they weren't able to be found. The town’s people disagreed with that so behind his back they called the two brothers. And this a story you won't forget the two brothers showed up and were happily greeted by the town’s people.

Payton announced,“We will solve your curious problems but for us to do this we will need to ask questions if you disagree with this we understand but you will be a witness.”The towns folk all agreed on it and the questioning was continued the two brothers questioned a single mother named Gorelda she wasn't the most trusting but when it came to the safety of her children she would spill all her knowledge.

Gorelda explained, “We are all suspicious of our mayor his name is Terry he is our main concern but there is also this old building we all nhere screams and cries come out of but Terry just tells us it nothing we would investigate but we are all to scared and have family to look out for if something were to happen to us.”

Payton replied, “It's ok mame we will investigate both situations and solve all this confusion your people have about your so called mayor.” The lady thanked him and they left

Braiden said, “So which one we question about first the mayor or the creepy old abandoned building?”

Payton said,“I honestly think we should split up i'll talk to the mayor and you'll check out the old building.”Payton smacked Braiden on the back and said

“Ok let's do this.”Braiden didn't have any time to share his thoughts about this plan but there wasn't much he could do anyways.Payton went up to the mayor's house it was a big house overlooking the town Payton knocked on the door knock..knock..knock no answer meanwhile Payton waits Braiden was asking the townspeople if they know any details about the old, creepy looking building.Payton seems to have no progress with the mayor but he sees a open window about two stories up

Payton said to himself,“I think if i use a rope i can climb up and get in the house that way.”Payton climbs up and on his way in makes a loud sound bang!!!

the mayor comes running up stairs and screams,“What are you doing in my house this a violation of my privacy i should have you thrown in jail for this boy!!”

Payton says anxiously,“Sorry mayor but i thought you were in trouble you didn't answer the door.”

the mayor replied,“I didn't hear you very well i'm getting older and it's harder to hear things.”

Payton shook his head and says,“I knocked several times and even almost brook down the door, when i saw the window i thought it could be a way in without causing much damage.”

The mayor told him,“I'm just fine but thank you for your concern but i think it's time for you to explain yourself why are you in my house in the middle of the night?”

Payton explained“I have some questions to ask you sir.”The mayor then replied “About what exactly?”

Payton said,“about the town's past history, you wouldn’t know anything would you?”The mayor looked startled and a little questionable about about what Payton had said so Payton trusted his word and left but he knew there was more to the story so he would go back the next night.Meanwhile Payton and Braiden meet back up in the middle of town

Payton explained”I didn't get much out of the mayor but a dirty look for sneaking in his house.”

Braiden laughed and said,”Well you might not have found anything but while i was looking inside the house i found this.”Braiden showed him a picture of the mayor and his family and he said,”The mayor had a family they must of died in that house when it burnt down.”

Payton agreed and explained,”that's why he has never been the same since the accident.”But Braiden questioned it and said,”But what if it wasn't an accident what if it was on purpose?”Payton stood there in amazement and explained that he was going back tomorrow night when the sun go down to find out more information. So they went to the motel they wer staying at to get some rest for the next day. Finally the sun had come up and as well was the boys they got all the ger they needed to pull off the mission to break into the mayors house andthis time Braiden was comming with Payton.Until the sun came down they would spy on the mayor to see if they coud find anythig out that was needed. It was at last dark and Payton and Braiden both knew time must not be wasted and quikly Payton again spotted an open window knowing that Braiden was lighter he would send him up.

Braiden said,”Ain't no way i’m going up there and getting caught by that shifty man.”Then payton had explained they didn’t have time for that and needed to act quickly.

Braiden argued,’’But why me why can’t you,you already did it once?”

Payton said aggravated,”Your lighter and it will take less time than it will if i were to do it.”Braiden had finally agreed and they threw a rope up and Braiden climbed up into the house.Payton herd a loud crashing noise and knew he had fell luckily the mayor was away from the house.Braiden opened the door and said out of breath,”The door was unlocked already did you know about this?”

     Payton laughed and said,”Yeah.”

Braiden asked in a high pitched voice,”but why i thought i was your friend?”

Payton said,”You are but would have been the fun in just opening the door.”

Braiden looked at him with a smug look and said quietly,”Let’s just find what we need and get out of here i don't want to be here longer than we have to.”The two boys walked through the hallway and came to a room with the door cracked open it was a storage room full of all sorts of documents

Braiden said with treatment,”Wow look at all this how are we ever supposed to find the town's history records in all this?”

Payton said,”Well we'll just have to start somewhere and by that i mean anywhere but we gotta hurry before the mayor gets back.”The two boys started looking as fast as they could when Braiden came acrossed a file labeled “Wedgy family house”

Braiden said with excitement,”Look at this payton it's the wedgy family house incident.”

Payton asked,”Isn’t the mayor's last name wedgy as in like a wedgy board?”

Braiden said,”Yes yes it is this must be the mayor's old house before it burnt and his family they all look so happy i wonder what happened.”They looked at each other with confusion and Braiden read a page of the documents it said “house of the wedgies was burnt down in 1964 the accident that was reported by Terry wedgy the youngest, the police never found out what had caused it but yet they found a small box of matches under the youngest boys bed.Investigators left the case assuming it was an electrical problem. The case has never been brought up again except for two investigators that new there was more to the story but sadly had died 3 days after they had started the investigation.”

Braiden said,”It's as tho the incident just vanished and no one has ever tried to find out ever since the other two investigators.”

Payton explained,”There's something going on around here and i think the mayor is not really the mayor and we must stop him!”The two waited for the mayor to return and came to his front door without knocking the mayor immediately opened the door

Terry said, “Come in i would love to have you guys for dinner.”

Braiden said eagerly,”All right i'm starving.”

But as soon as he did Payton stopped him and said,”We're not going anywhere until you explain these to us.”Payton threw the pictures on the ground and as soon as the mayor saw them he ran.The boys chased after him but he ran to the ledge and jumped off.The boys ran to the ledge and looked off and he was gone.

     Braiden asked,”Where did he go?’’

Payton said,”I think i know where he went.”The two boys ran to the mayor's old house that had burnt down Payton knew he would be there back to where it all began when they finally made it there the mayor was already there with a wedgy board.Payton and Braiden knew that he was trying to summon demons to come and rule over the word but Payton and Braiden weren't about to let them they grabbed his hands and smashed the wedgy board in half and arrested him. They took him far away from that town so he would never be able to punish that town ever again.Three weeks later the town went back to its normal hobbies and never before had it ever seen the beauty in that place and that will never change.

Alone

----------------------------------------------

As I stood there alone, In the cold and the dark, I realized something. All I had to do was jump. Just jump and it would all be over. All the pain and the hatred, all the disgust and the filth. Could It really be that easy? Could it all be over with just a single, simple action? As the rain beat down on my back, making pools of water around me, I made a decision. I had to keep going.

The way I see it, the whole world is a lot quieter without all the excess. Well excess people, if they can be called people. All I remember is this, it was very quiet. Quiet. Social media, the press, our government, all extremely quiet. I guess they were all scared like the rest of us. As the whole world held it’s breath, no one knew what to do. When the hospitals closed, pharmacies were shut down, urgent care, emergency room’s, everything! All of that happened, quietly. When the government stopped broadcasting emergency messages, we kinda knew It was all over, that was the first strike. The next day, when quarantines were abandoned, sick people tried to leave the larger cities, because that's where it was the most, that's where all of the quarantines were. But traffic was horrid, bumper to bumper kinda thing. New York City, that was the first government message that really went through to the public. The government sent stealth bombers over the city. Let’s put it this way, traffic was no longer the problem there. Other meagerly populated cities followed, Los angeles, Chicago,  Houston, all gone. You could tell the world was really panicking. That was the second strike from the government. People were still listening then. Staying inside their homes, waiting for everything to blow over. The only problem was, people had families in those large cities. People started protesting, the government had taken it to far, blowing up cities to stop the infection from growing. Yeah I said it, infection, that's what it really was. Well anyway, when people started protesting, things turned violent, we are talking about other people’s families, but the government was failing. So finally all over America the government went crazy. All protesters were gunned down in the street. The third strike. People started to realize that the government was going to “solve” this with their military. People started your “average” doomsday events. Looting, murder, rape, no laws. There was no nine-nine-one to call. There was no hospital to go to if you were sick, there was no place you could go to escape the eventual doom. Because when you got sick, there was no turning back.

My name is Chris Sanchez, I lead a pretty normal life I suppose. Notice I said lead. When everything fell apart, I couldn’t stop it. For the first time in my life, I couldn’t fix it. When my mom got sick, what was I supposed to do? Hope that she would live? Pray that she would live? For as long as I can remember, it’s just been me and my mom. When my family needed a new car, my mom took on a third job, things like that, for the longest time we were a team, but now I no longer have my teammate. My dad left us when I was very little, I don’t even remember his face. I guess that's for the better, but I still wish he was around. Not having a dad has affected me in many different ways, but right now being alone in this whole, new world Is, well scary. Nowadays there is nothing to do, everything went dark, and everything is quiet.

I had friends before the apocalypse, I guess that’s what I'm calling it, what it really is. It’s just hard to comprehend. Those sort of things only happen to people in books and movies. No one was prepared. I don’t know what to do. I can’t survive by myself. I don’t even have any food or water. If only my dad was here, we could survive this thing, I wouldn’t have to worry about my next meal. I live way out in the country, in a small town named Osage, in the state of Missouri, in the country of America. All of that, well all it is is,  just labels, but I guess even In the apocalypse, they count for something. I remember when I was growing up, my mom would tell me stories of my dad. He had beautiful sparkly green eyes, a round plump nose, and a smile as wide as Texas, but his attitude wasn’t the best. He didn’t mean to but, I guess he got in a lot of fights with mom and all of that. The only thing is, those are just stories. And all I have are memories of those stories. I tried to leave my memories with my mom. I wanted to start a new life, being almost 16 and all. I could handle myself, but the memories, no matter how hard I tried, would always be there.

It’s only been a week since strike three, and i'm already out of food. I haven't stepped a foot outside of my house since they stopped broadcasting, where to go, where the food handouts are, just how to survive. I have to make the journey outside now. It sounds stupid, “the journey outside” but that's really what It was. I don’t have any weapons, and even If I did I wouldn’t know how to shoot them. This trip would be just to the store and back. I had just gotten my learners permit a couple of months ago, so I had that going for me. As I sat down In my ford F-150 I heard gunshots. Not the kind of gunshots that are from a measly bb gun, but real, hard gunshots. The noise sent a chill up my spine. I didn’t know what to do. Would I be shot for my truck? Is this what the world was really coming to. My stomach had started hurting from lack of food. I really needed some bad. Maybe I could go to my neighbors and ask for food. I hadn’t thought of that. To be honest, I thought all my neighbors were all dead, I hadn’t seen them In a while so can you blame me? I decided that going to people I know for help might be my best option, so I got out of my truck, and jogged across the street to my closest neighbor. Her name was Mrs. Angelo. I don’t know her full name but I didn't really need to. She was a plump old lady that lived by herself in a two story building. As I was jogging across the street, I noticed all the window shades were down. I stood at the door. I knocked once, twice, three times. Nothing. I went around the side of the house because I knew she was in there, Mrs. Angelo never leaves her home. As I got to the back of the house I saw the back door, as I turned it I found it was unlocked! I stepped in and- what was that horrible smell? It smelled like someone left a carton of milk out in the son for two years. I started snooping around, calling out Mrs. Angelo every now and again. I feared what I might find, but I prayed that the smell was just here milk spoiled because without power, her fridge would be, well out of power. As I walked up the stairs, I took a left. I still regret doing that today. I see and smell the body on the other side of the room, not moving, not breathing. Laying there on a bead. I didn’t want to look at it anymore. I darted downstairs and out the backdoor. As I start to sprint to my house, I am filled with dread. I look at the driveway and my truck is gone! I must of left the keys in the ignition! As I start to curse under my breath, more gun shots. Closer this time. I knew I couldn’t stay here, there wasn’t anything here left for me. I needed food or I was going to starve, and the only thing that I had going towards getting food was now gone. I needed a new strategy, but all I could think about was how peaceful Mrs. Angelo was, and the fact that it was so quiet.

I started walking, in no particular direction, but I figured anything is better than sitting in my home waiting for the government to either shoot, or save me. I needed a plan and fast. I thought of going towards town, but then that's where the gunshots were coming from. Being alone really does suck.  I wish my dad was here. He is the only one left that's a family member, at least I hope he is still alive. I haven't talked to him in, well forever. My uncle died of a heroin overdose, and my mom had been devastated ever sense. Many times I thought of calling my dad, to get in touch, maybe he was a really cool guy, but did he even want to see me? He had walked out on us, and I had to remember that. I was thinking about that, thinking about a lot of things, then I heard it. An earshatering scream!

I snapped out of my crazy and looked around. Everything seemed normal. Almost as if none of this had ever happened. But I quickly realized that nothing good ever stays long. About 100 feet away, there was a couple of men, and my truck! There was a small child on the ground crying. I couldn’t just leave him there. Sticking to the fences of other houses, I snuck up to the group. There were three men there and all of them were just plain out harassing the kid. He looked to be around 12 but I wouldn’t know for sure. As he lay there on the ground, the three men kept yelling at him. Eventually after five minutes of this one man took out a gun and pointed at the boy.

“Ok this is getting old.” The tallest one laughed.

“Dude you can’t just shoot him, he’s just a kid.” Said the third one quietly.

“Why not? We took everything we needed.” Responded the tall one.

“Then let's just leave him, if he doesn't have anything we don’t need to waste a bullet on him.” Retorted the third one.

“No? Fine then let’s waste a bullet on you” Dared the tall one. Then out of nowhere he fired. The third man crippled down. When he lay still the two men turned their attention to the boy.

“Now does anyone oppose the death of this man?” The man said to himself. And just as he said it, I darted across the street behind a tree.

“No one? Well that's a shame” The man was back into a good mood, somehow. He had just taken a life yet he was fine with taking another one. I couldn’t stand it, I also couldn’t help that when I stepped out from behind the tree.

“Wait, don’t shoot the boy!” I screamed, and as the man turned to face me, I realised just how dumb I was.

“What did you just say?” He looked at me disgusted.

“Well I said, don’t kill the boy, also umm, you have my Truck and I want it back!” I said with unknown bravery.

“This your truck?” The second man said, speaking for the first time.

“Yes, why do you ask?” I replied, acting like I could take them both.

“I ask because I think that’s a dumb fact, obviously we have the truck, making it our truck.” He replied with a smug look on his face. I can't describe the two men because I hadn’t been looking at them. Just the small boy on the ground. Before I could think better of my actions I ran at the men. What did I expect to accomplish? I don’t really know. But I guess they were too shocked to move, as I ran into the one with the gun. As the gun hit the ground, it fired at the second man's leg. He fell to the ground with a yell of rage. The first man, doebbeling me in weight, pushed me off of himself. He reached for the gun, but it wasn’t there. The kid had it in his hands, pointed directly at the first man’s head.

“Hey kid, give me the gun and I won’t hurt anyone.” Whispered the man. He was obviously afraid.

“You don’t even know my name!” Spoke the kid that until then had not said a word. As the kid stood there, the first man was about to speak when we heard a car start. We looked over to see the second man, not in my ford, but in his original car. He pulled away and with a screech left.

“You're not going to kill me right?” Pleaded the man.

“We aren't going to kill you” I said. I have never killed anything, and I am not going to start with a man, I thought.

“What are you going to do with me?” He asked with so much fear in his voice.

“We are going to leave you here, and we better not see your face ever again.” I replied with a cool head. I started towards the truck, and as I got in, the door opened and the kid hopped in. I had forgotten all about him. I couldn’t just leave him, and he had a gun. I guess you're coming with me. He shut the door and we took off. We drove for a while not talking, until he finally said, “Hunter, my name is Hunter, I just needed to say thanks for saving me back there.” I turned to him and he had tears in his eyes.

“Who were those guys?” I asked him.

“The dead guy is my dad.” He replied softly. Softly and so quiet.

As we drove I told him my story, just where I had gone what I had done. We talked for a while, driving in no direction when I saw the next road sign. Woodberry. Woodberry was the town that my dad had gone to make a living. Maybe there was hope for a happy ending, maybe. As we drove I started to worry about gas. We finally stopped at a gas station. I got out of the truck hoping there was still gas in the pumps.

“Pumps are dry.” I said, annoyed.

“What now?” He asked. Truthfully I didn’t really know. So he got out and we started to walk. I told him that this was the town where my dad was hopefully. I shouldn’t of told him that because his eyes started to tear up. He seemed like a tough kid, his dad had died and he wasn’t shutting down. We were walking around looking for signs of life, because luckily this town seemed small, even smaller than mine. We came upon a cliff overlooking the Lake of the Ozarks. I turn to start walking and I see lights go off on the road. I grab the gun from Hunter’s hand. We crouch down and move forward to investigate. When we got close we saw the same two men we had come in contact with. There was a new guy though. They were talking to him, laughing at him.

“So you have not seen a white ford go through this town?” Asked the killer, yeah I think I will call him that, a killer.

“No I swear, please I don’t know anything!” Screamed the guy.

“What's your name?” Asked the second guy.

“My name? Brian. Brian Sanchez.” Replied the guy on the ground

“Well Brian, Brian Sanchez, we know that two kids came through this town. And you're not telling us anything.” The killer said as he pulled out a knife.

“You shouldn’t lie.” The killer said cooly, then without hesitation, well you get the picture. As brian lay there dead, I connect the dots. I cry out with rage. I jump from my position, gun In hand. I squeezed the trigger, and it's all over. I had killed. For the first time in my life. I had taken lives from this world. I walk over to the lake view. In any movie, when a main character dies, it starts to rain, and that’s just what happened.  And as I stood there alone, In the cold and the dark, I realised something. All I had to do was jump. Just jump and it would all be over. All the pain and the hatred, all the disgust and the filth. Could It really be that easy? Could it all be over with just a single, simple action? As the rain beat down on my back, making pools of water around me, I made a decision. I had to keep going.

‘’Hey, Tristan, how long have you been playing football?’’ asked Cole

‘’ Five years,’’ said Tristan

‘’ I have been playing for seven years and it is my favorite sport,’’ said Cole

‘’ Yeah, me too,’’ replied Tristan

‘’ I couldn’t live without football it’s just my passion.’’ said Cole

Tristan was staying the night at Cole’s house tonight. Both Tristan and Cole both played on the USA team.‘’I have a funny memory with my dad,’’ said Cole

‘’It’s when I played flag football and kid went to pull my flag off of me but instead he pulled my shorts down,’’ said Cole

Tristan and Cole walked into the living to watch some sport shows. Cole’s dad was coughing in the background.

‘’Dad, are you alright?’’ asked Cole

‘’Ya,I just got a cough and my rib hurts,’’ replied Cole’s dad

Cole and Tristan walked back into Cole’s room and sat down on Cole’s bed.

‘’ I want to play XBOX,’’ said Tristan

‘’ What game,’’ replied Cole

‘’ Football,’’ replied Tristan

They played for 30 minutes and Tristan smoked Cole by 20 minutes.

Cole stated ‘’ I always take it easy on my guest,’’

“ Yeah right you're just jealous that I won and you didn’t,’’ exclaimed Tristan

‘’ Boys dinner's ready,’’ called Cole’s mom

‘’ Coming,’’ yelled Cole

The Wilson family and Tristan ate hamburgers and french fries for dinner. For dessert they had ice cream. When they got done eating they went outside to watch shooting stars. They laid on the deck for one hour.

‘’Hey Tristan want to go back inside and do something,’’ asked Cole

‘’Sure what do we want to do,’’ replied Tristan

“ We can go over football plays and get them down before we play Canada in a week,’’ said Cole

“ Sure,’’ replied Tristan

Cole and Tristan walked back into the house and went over their football plays. When they got tired of running over the plays they fell asleep on the couch in the living room. The next morning Tristan and Cole woke up and saw Cole’s mom cooking biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

‘’Mom did you make bacon?’’ asked Cole

‘’Of course I would because both of you love bacon,’’ replied Cole’s mom

Cole’s dad walks into the kitchen and says

‘’Once you boys get done eating we are going to have football practice,’’ said Cole’s dad

‘’ Yes,’’ replied Tristan

‘’ Are we going to add new plays in so we can trick the Canada’s defense?’’ asked Cole

“ Probably because Canada has the best defense we will ever see,’’ replied Cole’s dad

“ I am going to the doctor during practice to check if I have something wrong with my rib,’’ said Cole’s dad

“ What's wrong,’’ asked Tristan

“ Well I have this cough and whenever I cough my rib hurts,” replied Cole’s dad

“ Breakfast is ready boys,” said Cole’s mom

“ Ok,’’ said Cole

When the boys got done eating they went to Cole’s room and got all of their football equipment ready for practice later on. Cole’s dad drove them to practice. During football practice the coaches put in new offensive plays. When Cole’s dad drove away Cole was thinking “Hopefully dad is ok.”

When Cole’s dad got back from the doctor Cole’s dad pulled Cole to the side and told him  “Son I have cancer in my rib.’’

“ When are you going to the hospital?” asked Cole

“ Mom is taking me right now,’’ replied Cole’s dad

“ You are going home with Tristan tonight and you are going to stay there till tomorrow,” said Cole's dad

“ Ok bye dad,” said Cole

Cole went back to practice and he couldn’t get his dad off his mind. Cole didn’t practice as well when he knew about what happening to his dad. When practice was over Cole and Tristan walked off the field to go get into Tristan’s mom’s car. When they got home they ate dinner and went to bed because they both were tired. Late on that week Tristan’s mom took Tristan and Cole to go see Cole’s dad in the hospital. When they got to the hospital Tristan’s mom asked the lady at the front desk “ What number is Mr. Wilson in?’’

“ # 54 on the first floor,’’ replied the lady

“ Thank you so much.” said Tristan’s mom

When they got to the room Cole’s dad was sleeping. When he woke up he noticed that Cole and Tristan and his mom were there.

“ Hey dad how are you feeling?’’ asked Cole

“ Not to well,” replied Cole’s dad

Tristan and his mom stayed at the hospital for a little while and left.

“ Dad are you able to coach the championship game against Canada?’’ asked Cole

“ No probably not,” replied Cole’s dad

“ Ahh man,’’ said Cole

“ You have a choice Cole play in the championship game against Canada or stay at the hospital when your dad is getting surgery,’’ said Cole’s mom

“ I will have to think about it mom,’’ said Cole

‘’ It’s fine if you want to go and play football with your buddies,’’ said Cole’s mom

Later on that night Cole thought really hard about that decision to stay at the hospital or go play football.

“ Mom I have made my mind up. I want to stay at the hospital with dad,’’ said Cole

“ Ok are you sure about it,’’ replied Cole’s mom

“ Yes I am sure mom because dad is more important than football is,’’ said Cole

The day of the championship game Cole was nervous that his team was going to lose. Cole was waiting to hear from the doctor about how his dad was doing. When the doctor came to tell his mom about Cole’s dad Cole jumped out of his chair and ran to the doctor.

“ How is my dad doing?’’ asked Cole

The doctor replied “ He is doing fine,’’

‘’ Thank the lord,’’ said  Cole

Cole ran back to his mom and said “ Dad is doing fine.’’

“ Yes I know I heard the doctor,’’ replied Cole’s mom

Tristan and his mom and dad walked into the hospital and told Cole and his mom that they won the football game.

“ Today is the best day ever two good things have happened to me, said Cole When Cole’s dad got released from the hospital Cole and his mom walked Cole’s dad to the car and got stopped by family members.

They asked how Cole’s dad was doing.

Cole’s mom replied ‘’ He is doing better than he was he still feels like he is going to get sick, but other than that he feels good.”

‘’ Well that's good,’’ the family members replied

When Cole and his family got home they all went and took a nap.

When Cole’s dad woke up he was hungry for steak. Cole’s mom says ‘’you can’t eat that when you just got out of the hospital.’’

“ I will got the store and get you some chicken soup,’’ said Cole’s mom

When Cole’s mom got back  she put the chicken soup in the microwave and gave it to Cole’s dad.

“ Mom what are we having for dinner?’’ asked Cole

“ We might have chicken strips,’’ replied Cole’s mom

Cole and his mom ate chicken strips for dinner.

Later on that week Cole and his mom took Cole’s dad to the doctor.

The doctor told Cole’s mom that Cole’s dad wasn’t getting better.

Cole’s mom replied. ‘’ well what do we do take him back to the hospital.’’

“ Yes I would take him back to the hospital,’’ replied the doctor

Cole and his mom took him back to the hospital.

The doctor asked “ well why did you come back?’’

“ My dad isn’t feeling better that’s why,’’ replied Cole

The doctor asked Cole’s dad to get on the stretcher and they would wheel him into this room.

Later on that day the doctor asked Cole’s mom if she wanted Cole’s dad to go into another surgery.

Cole’s mom said ‘’whatever that would make him feel better,’’

‘’The surgery would,’’ replied the doctor

When the surgery began the doctor thought that Cole’s dad wouldn’t make it. In the middle of the surgery Cole’s dad passed away.

He passed away of the heart couldn’t take all of the surgery in once and the doctor couldn’t do anything about it.

When i woke up i saw  my best friend chandler knew each other since kindergarten strapped down and some people in mask over next to him.I looked over and saw him crying with fear when the masked people moved i seen a hole the size of a quarter in his stomach .When i saw the masked people come toward me with a drill and a knife in one of the masked people´s hand.I felt a tear go down my cheek.

The wind whistled through the many large oak trees standing straight, pushed the faded blue shutters against molded white siding lining the small, old houses. Birds that flew around chirped beautiful songs. The bright yellow sun sent golden rays of light that illuminated the deep green grass and highlighted the pale blue sky. It sent shimmers across the small creek that trickled down a small hill, eventually dispersing among the many pine trees that led into a large forest. Along the houses was a dirt road that would send large puffs of dirt into the air as cars passed by heading to the glowing city in the distance that wrapped it large arms around a never ending, blue sea.

“Good morning, Robert,” Lucy said as her husband, Robert, opened one of the many cabinets in their small but adequate kitchen.

“Good morning, Lucy. Make anything yet? Or were you talking to the paperboy again?” Robert put much emphasis on the last phrase just to tease her. Lucy’s face sagged into a small frown of disapproval, but realized too late it was a joke, as Robert walked over to the island in the middle of the kitchen to look at the newspaper.

“Good God. Hear this honey ‘1500 dead, Congress votes war...Oahu bombed by stunning numbers of Japanese bombers and fighters...men fought heroically...Americans suffered heavy losses‘ I need to run away!” Robert exclaimed, “if they declared war, they most certainly will have a draft.” Robert was almost shaking at this point. He didn’t want to go to war, He wanted to stay with Lucy

“Robert! Please, don’t run. This country needs you. I need you!” Lucy’s eyes started to well up with tears at the sound of the unwanted news. She knew if he ran away she would need to find a job or she’d lose the house. She was most worried about whether Robert would come home again.

For most of the day, the couple just went their separate ways. Robert sat on the couch, drinking glass after glass of scotch to calm himself. Lucy knew this was not going to go well. She was worried about Robert and his idea to run, but she was more worried about the house. How could she afford to pay it with no money coming in? Lucy then, for some reason, decided to walk outside for a nice breath of fresh air to think about options. She sat down in her rocking bench, the wind blowing with the occasional car passing by when suddenly, she saw a poster encouraging people to join factories, “ The more women at work, the sooner we will win!

“That’s it!” Lucy exclaimed. She raced home to gather her thoughts.

When she sat down at her desk down the hall from the kitchen, she started looking at where the closest plane factory is, then there was a loud grunt and the slamming of a door.

“Oh god, Robert, that better not be you.” Lucy turned from happy to furious in a matter of seconds. She stormed down the hallway and out the back door. She soon saw a dim silhouette of a tall man walking north to Canada. It was Robert.

“Robert! Come back here, now!” Lucy yelled for the whole neighborhood to hear. Lucy knew that Robert was gone. She went home and just sulked in her large, empty bed.

When she woke up the next morning, she drove over to the breakfast bar in town to calm her mind. She ordered a steamy plate of biscuits covered in a thick layer of lumpy gravy topped with a hint of seasoning and a large cup of  rich, dark coffee. She ate as though she hasn’t eaten in days. When she finished, the waitress was astounded by her appetite. Lucy paid the bill, then she rushed to the Boeing plant to sign up as a riveter. When she got there, trying to park took forever. The parking lot was filled to the brim. The only spot she could find was way the heck away in a small farm field a half mile away.

“Hi there ma’am, how are you?” asked a small lady at the front desk,”You here to join the force?”

“Yes, I am. My husband fled to Canada to avoid the draft.” Lucy tried to hide her frustration by biting her tongue. “so know I’m looking for a way to earn a little money.”

The lady at the front desk showed Lucy to a large oak table cluttered with forms and pens and motioned her to sit down.

“Just fill out the info at the top, then sign on the dotted line.” the lady was nice. She definitely wanted Lucy to be interested in the job. Lucy filled out all papers then handed it to the lady.

“Now, ma’am, we will be taking a tour of our facility.” and with that, Lucy walked with the lady around the hot, musty warehouse filled with women and men from all types of backgrounds, heavily focused with the task in front of them. Many of them wore loose fitting overalls that were smeared with layers of dark brown grease and dirt. They all held dull silver riveting guns, pounding away at large, thin panels of silver steel. Smaller men and women were under the planes painting them light gray, and at the top of them, women were painting them varieties of green, black, and brown.

At the end of the tour, Lucy was given a crisp milky uniform. Lucy left the factory and drove up the hill to her small home on the outskirts of town. She parked the car in her driveway, walked inside and plopped down with a loud thud. She slowly sank down into her velvety, bumpy couch with its numerous coffee stains and fell fast asleep.

She woke to the aromatic scent of her many magenta tulips outside, glistening with the platinum drops of early morning dew. Squirrels ran around her big oak tree in the backyard. The air felt icy. She got up from her lumpy couch and made herself a steamy bowl of dull brown oatmeal with drops of jet black raisins. She scarfed the bowl down, slipped into her uniform and rushed outside to her car. She flew down the street to the factory. It was Lucy’s first day on the job and she was already late.

She arrived with 1 minute to spare. She ran through the door, checked in at the desk and made it to her station.

“I’m here, ma’am,” Lucy gasped after her long run down to the end of the warehouse, “where should I start?”

“Start by cleaning the tops of the planes. Then, when that’s done, work on riveting door panels together.” the tall, strongly built woman demanded.

Lucy grabbed her rusted bucket and filled with milky gray water and added some soap. She grabbed a dirty mauve rag from a large container that sent a musty smell that filled the room. She walked over to her plane and climbed a steep set of stair and began her job. The plane was covered in layer of dust that, with the slightest breath, would flash a large cloud of dust making her weeze every thirty seconds. The bucket had a small hole in it that leaked water across the top of  the plane. Lucy stopped to catch a breather.

As she picked up her bucket and started to move towards the back of the plane, she lost her grip on the bucket. Water fell on the plane as it hit the plane with a loud banging noise then slowly slid of the side and eventually spilling all over the floor. She bent over to wipe up the water with her rag, when her foot slipped. Lucy clung on to a small handle on the side to avoid falling down. Slowly the handle broke off sending Lucy hurtling down. The wind whipped her hair around. Her face was filled with fear as she realized her fate.  She tumbled around flailing, hoping to find something to grab on to. She hit the solid concrete floor with a sickening crunch as her bones shattered. Warm, crimson blood oozed out of her head. Her eyes, filled with pain, dripped tears that slid across her cheeks. She tried to speak, but all that came out was a small flow of air. Blood filled her mouth as she began to choke, then it spilled out and down her mouth. She slowly closed her eyes as her body grew limp, then, all went dark for Lucy.

“Goodnight Lucy, don’t let the bedbugs bite,” her mom whispered. Lucy slowly opened her eyes to see her mom tucking her into bed

“Goodnight Mom,” Lucy whispered. As her mom walked out of the room Lucy pulled her bright blue blanket up to her neck, fluffed her matching pillow until it was big and poofy, then turned off the light on her night stand. She gently rested her head on the pillow and went to sleep.

I layed on the withered couch, closely observing the picture. The sharp boxes everywhere juxtaposed perfectly with the hundreds of scurrying people. “What do you think it was like?” I asked. “Back before the virus.”

Toph responded from across the room. “From what I’ve heard, it was exceptionally boring! Imagine having nothing better to worry about than boys and clothes! It would be unbearable!”

“I guess so,” I said. “It was a bizarre time.” Toph got up and walked over to me. “They turned this city into a colony,” I said pointing at the faded photo of Chicago in my hand. “Most people say it’s like heaven out there.”

“Well ‘most people’ don’t know anything. Come on Chloe, let’s go.”

As much as I would have loved to stay put all night, she was right. The couch groaned as its springs decompressed. I groaned just as loud.

“You’re sure he’s not coming back here until morning?” I whispered, petrified.

“Everything is fine!” Toph seemed almost arrogant in her trust of the plan. “I’ve been following this guy for six weeks now. I know his schedule front and back.

I still felt concerned, but I decided to stay quiet. I opened the door slowly, and walked inside, with Toph following close behind. We went in and started to look around. It was very dark, but I could see the faint moon-lit outline of the room. I walked over to a door in the wall and slowly opened it a crack.

“Why does a farmer have a bathroom!?” I whispered harshly.

“Oh no.” The sound of dread in Toph’s voice sent shivers down my spine. I quickly walked over to her. “We have to get out of here right now,” she said in a terrified voice.

“What is it!?”

“This drawer has a gun in it. Only enforcers have guns. We’re in the wrong house.” I let the horrifying reality sink in for a moment, but then I heard the door creak.

“Hello? Who's there!?” It was a deep rough voice. The words echoed through my mind over and over, like a throbbing mess of terrifying anticipation. The light switched on.

“Don’t move a muscle!” Toph stood there with a gun pointed directly at the enforcer’s head.

“Don’t shoot!” he said.

“Give me one reason not to!”

“B-because I can get you out of here!” he stuttered.

“We can get out ourselves,” I chimed in.

“But then what?” He was still terrified, but he somehow also looked very smug. I followed his gaze to a small rectangular box in the corner of the room. “It’s a camera. A group of enforcers have probably already been dispatched to kill you. Even if you could escape, the Imperial Guard has already seen your face.”
“Ok, even if you’re telling the truth, what can you do for us?”

“Because I can get you out of the colony!”

Toph took the gun and gestured towards the window. “Get us out. Now!”

He slowly approached the window, while Toph tracked his head with the gun. We followed him, out the window, to a ladder. If this complex had as much of an issue with fire as ours, I’m sure it got plenty of use. At the bottom of the ladder I looked around. I’d never actually been to this area of the colony, but just like everywhere else, there wasn’t much to see. Sheets of metal forming makeshift roofs threatened to collapse on a dusty, detritus covered ground. The effluvia of decaying garbage filled my nose with a pungent scent that was enough to make me gag. In a single file line, we slowly stepped over countless piles of rubble, making our way to the edge of the colony.

“So this is the wall keeping anyone from escaping?” I whispered to myself.

The man overheard and responded. “They assume that no one is stupid enough to try and survive out there. I’m going to leave now so don’t shoot.” He walked away slowly. I could tell Toph was seriously considering pulling the trigger. She didn’t, and as soon as the man was behind the corner I could hear frantic footsteps. Everything confused me. Just another simple burglary had turned into something that I’d never recover from. I’d never see my room, or my friends, or my-- I was so caught up in thinking that I didn’t realize Toph was talking.

“We don't have all day! He’s probably off getting backup if we don't leave soon! Come on! Lift me up!” I stood by the wall and cupped my hands tightly together to hold her weight. When she got up she extended her hands to grab me. I jumped down and hit the ground with a thud that sent dust flying everywhere. It already smelled better on this side of the wall. We could hear voices from inside the compound so we ran as fast as we could.

The farther away from my home got, the greener everything was, and the more free I felt. We ran minutes on end, never stopping, and never looking around. Never before in my life had I run straight for so long, or so far. It was truly liberating. After what seemed like hours of running, I was still full of adrenalin, and energy, but we stopped by a small cavern. “What do we do now?” I asked. “We can’t go back, and I don't have a clue of how to survive in the wilderness long term.”

“We’ll just have to improvise. A while back I actually saw a survival book. I didn’t understand the text, but the pictures showed me a few things.” Toph seemed much more optimistic than me.

“I guess that’s a start, but there's no way we could make it through winter.”

“What was that city you were talking about? You know, paradise?”

“You mean Chicago?” From the stories I had heard, the colony that Chicago was turned into, was only a few dozen miles east. “Let’s just get some rest. It has to already be past midnight.” Toph nodded, and we entered the cavern. The floor was cold, moist and uncomfortable, but the soft sounds of an outside stream comforted me asleep in minutes.

In the morning I ached all over my body from sleeping on the cold hard cave floor, so I got up and decided to get up and walk it off. I exited the cave to the vibrant light of the outside world. A few rays of sun breached the forest top and illuminated small regions on verdant, mossy ground. A small breeze gently rustled through the leaves onto my face. I took a long deep breath in. The pure, unpolluted air seeped into my lungs. It felt like the air cleansed me of the pollution I’d breathed all my life. I exhaled heavily and nothing felt better. I reached up and grabbed a leaf from a low hanging branch. Never in my entire life in the colony had I ever seen anything so vibrantly green. I carefully examined the intricate patterns formed inside the leaf for more than a minute then I let go, and watched as the wind carried the leaf in a twirling path, delicately gliding through the shrubbery, gently improvising a complex dance, calculated yet unpredictable. Finally it glided to a halt into the river below me, and was carried away violently on the cascading jets of water. I bent down and collected some water in my cupped hands. It tasted fantastic

“We should get going.” Toph’s voice snapped me back into reality. I wanted to argue with her, but I knew she was right. The sun was barely visible above the trees, but it was enough to see the direction that we should be headed. I begrudgingly started walking.
“This way,” I said pointing at the direction of the sun. Toph got a drink of water, and then caught up with me quickly. As much as I missed everything in my home that I had learned to love, this was still a thousand times better. Maybe if I had a family back at the colony I would have felt worse, but at the moment I was with the only person I really cared about.

We walked for hours, trudging through miles of densely populated forest. We had to maneuver our way around hundreds of rocks bushes and trees, but in every area we walked through the trees seemed to be more, and more dispersed. Toph and I didn’t talk much, and when we did it died down quickly. This didn't bother me though. I was lost in my own thoughts.

“Look over there!” Toph exclaimed. She was pointing towards something in the distance.
“What is it?” I asked.

“It looks like a road,” she responded. “Come on, follow me.” She started running, and I quickly followed her. As we got closer I realized she was right. I’d never seen a path bigger than a meter or two wide before, much less one made out of pure asphalt. The forest was spilling onto the road from both sides, but you could easily tell that it was once barren.

“We must be getting close,” I said stepping up onto the highway. “Let’s follow this road until we get to the city.” As soon as I started walking I instantly felt relieved that I no longer had to roam through an overgrown forest. On the edge of the road there were hundreds of huge metal poles that plants used as support. Out of every crack and crevice, plant life exploded outwards. The more we walked the more buildings we saw. Most of them were fully or partially destroyed, but at one point we even saw a full building. It was covered in plants, but we managed to get the vines covering the door out of the way. Inside there were shelves of mulch covered in plastic. A putrid, nauseating smell filled the room. Needless to say we left almost immediately.

As soon as the tall buildings came into view I was filled with hope and determination. The huge metal behemoths touched the sky and then kept going. They were just silhouettes in the sky, but they were still fascinating. The closer we got, the more defined they were in the sky, and the bigger they got. Even from that far away you could easily tell they were rusted and in ruins. Buildings popped up more and in more variety, but night was approaching fast and we were almost there, so we decided not to enter them. Finally we reached the entrance. A huge fence surrounded the city, so we followed the road for a few minutes around until we reached what looked like an entrance. There was a yellow sign hanging from the fence with symbols on the top and bottom, and a picture of a hand with lightning bolts coming out of it in the middle.

“What do you think that means?” I asked pointing towards the sign.

“I don’t know,” Toph responded. “Maybe something about the fence.” She seemed not to care. “Hello is anyone there!?”

“There have to be people here,” I said. “There weren't normally fences around cities, right?”

Toph just shrugged. “Let’s climb over and see where the people are.”

Whatever the sign said about the fence didn’t happen to us. We jumped the fence with ease and started walking around. The deeper we got into the city, the more vegetation there was. Ancient, rusted cars completely covered the street, and some of the roads were flooded or blocked by fallen debris, so finding our way around wasn’t easy. “Hello!?” I yelled, “Anyone there!?” No response.

“There has to be people here… right?” For the first time ever Toph sounded scared.

“Right,” I said. I sounded much more confident than I felt. “Let’s get to the top of a building, and look around from there. We found a building that didn’t look too decrepit, but was tall enough to get a good view of the city. We climbed set after set of stairs until we finally reached the top. I looked around from the roof of the building. There was no sign of any recent civilization. Toph trudged over to the edge of the building and sat down, dangling her legs over the edge. My legs felt like collapsing under my weight so I walked up to her and sat down as well. I was exhausted and starving. Colossal monoliths of steel surrounded me in every direction. It was nothing like I had ever seen before. The streets were painted in a thick layer of rubble and water. Huge gaping holes were formed in the every part of the buildings. Every spot that wasn’t made of rust or a broken window was covered in plants. It was clear the humans no longer owned this city. I could never Imagine what it would have been like to live in this time, but I still craved that much comfort more than anything else. In the distance the sun slowly climbed below the horizon, forming a brilliant array of indescribable color. It was beautiful, but then, in a single moment, everything went dark.

“There's no one here, is there?” Toph said quietly. She sounded like she had given up.

“We don’t know that for sure!” I said. I tried to sound enthusiastic, but I knew I failed.

“I’m... I’m so sorry.” Toph paused. “This is all my fault. If I had just been more careful we wouldn’t have gotten into this mess… I can’t imagine how much you must hate me right now.”

I thought back to the theft. It felt like it had been ages even though it was just a few days ago. “I don’t blame you.” This time I really meant what I said. “You couldn’t have known that any of this would happen.” A single tear dropped from Toph's eye, and fell all the way down the building to the ground. I never thought that I would ever see a forest, or a building, or a city, but the one thing that I never even considered that I would see, was Toph crying.

“I guess so,” she said. “I still feel bad about all this though… How will we make it through winter if there's no colony here in the city?”

“I don’t know,” I said looking into Toph's eyes. “But whatever happens… We’ll deal with it together.” I leaned in towards Toph and hugged her with intensity.

“Yeah,” she said. “Together.”

The Criminals….

Beep, Beep, Beep. It is 6:30 A.M. I am waking up to my stupid alarm. I get up and walk to the curtains. I look outside. “What the….”

“Watch your mouth young man.”
“But . . .”

“But nothing, you're grounded.”

“Uhhh I hate my life.”

“Say another word you won't do anything for the whole month of March.  Now come downstairs and eat breakfast.”Liam now.”

”Coming, What are we having for breakfast.”

“Ham and eggs.”

“Yes my favorite,  mom can you get the mustard.”

“Yes”.

“Thank you.”

“So has school been.”

“Good well I have been doing pretty bad in social studies. I was doing so well in the beginning of the school year. I was getting straight A’s But now C’s and D’s. I dont know whats going on.”

“Maybe you can ask her teachers for extra credit.”

“Hey thats sounds good, I am going to school mom”.

“Ok love you, bye.”

“Bye.” I forgot what I saw outside my curtains. I slowly started walking towards the door. I reached for the doorknob,it was hot. I grabbed a hold of it.It burnt my hand. I opened the door as fast as I could. There were people on the street with guns, big  guns. I went into the garage got my bicycle and started heading down the street. The people with the guns saw me. I heard a revving engine. I looked behind me. There was a big yellow struck with two guns on it with big guns. I thought to myself this will be it and didn't even say I love u back to my mom when she said to me heading to school. I heard the truck getting closer and closer.I saw a  little dirt road up a head. I took a right turn. I barely wrecked. My left leg hit the ground hard. I could hear the car engine. I could tell it was not that far behind

“you can't run from us.I was peddling as fast as I could go. I saw a sign but it was too far away to see. I soon as I got closer I saw the sign.

It said “Dead end.” I tried to slow down but I was going to fast. I sonnely came to the end. I flew of the rock cliff. I was falling. I felt queasy in my stomach. I was falling fast. I did not want to look down. I could hear water rushing really fast. SPLASH. I hit the water really hard. The water was going so fast it sucked me under. I saw a tree lying in the river. I got sucked under the water, this time I went down far. I could see the  tree just up ahead.I got sucked one more time. As soon as I popped up I grabbed the tree branch. My palms grasped the scratching branch. My hands were slipping. The water was making worse. Finally my hands slipped. I took a deep breath. I was falling. I looked down and saw dirt and rocks. I was getting closer and closer by the second. I finally hit. BOOM that's all you could hear except my bones cracking. I laid down in the dirt for awhile. I could see the bone sticking out of my leg. There was a road up ahead. I started crawling to the road. I had to stop because of the pain in my leg. It took my fifteen minutes to crawl to the road. After fifteen minutes I got to the road. The road was very busy. I looked down at my watch it said 4:30. I reached down in my pocket to get my phone, it must of fell out in the water! I was thinking about my mom. I bet she has called the cops and the school. I should have been home and hour ago. I saw a policeman driving by. Is window was down I yelled “Help” “Help.” The police man quickly came to a stop.

“Son why are you out here.”

“Then I told the police officer my series of unfortunate events.

“The police officer said can I contact any body.

“Yes my mom.”

Do you know her phone number son.”

“Yes, 5737896678.”

“Thank you.”

“No problem.”

“What is your name.”

“Liam”

“Well Liam nice to meet you and sorry for the trouble I promise we will find the criminals.”

“Liam do you know what color the truck was or the brand or style it was.”

“Yes it was a yellow truck with two guns on the top.”

“Thank you.”

“Your welcome.”

The policeman went back in his car. He was talking on the phone after an hour of talking the police man go out of his car and came to me.

Well Liam I told you mom was okay except your broken leg.”

“Ok, thank you for calling her.”

Your welcome. Well you will be riding with me back to her house.”

“Ok sounds great.”

When i got into the cop car there were all types of stuff. I was playing with the computer. I was pretty exhausted. I leaned back in the chair and went to sleep. The cop taped my on the shoulder.

“Liam we are in town.”

“Ok how far from my house.”

“Were not going to your house.”

“What why.”

“When you were sleeping your mom called and said just to meet us at the hospital because your leg lost a lot of blood.”

“Ok.”

“The hospital is about two hours away.”

I quickly fell back asleep. I was dreamy about my mom and how happy I would be when I saw her again and her beighing so thankful i came back okay. The officer woke me up.

“We are here.”

The officer carried me into the hospital. I got into the room and my mom was on the bed waiting for me.

“Liam are you okay did they do anything to hurt you.”

“No.”

The doctors came in they put me to sleep. Next thing I know I was in the car riding back home the first word I told my mom was “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

I was out of school for at least two months. I told my mom “You promise you will take me to school every day.”

“Yes i promise Liam.”

For the two months I was out of school I was doing extra work for social studies. I mailed all my work to the school. When I got my results back on every paper  I got a B or better. My mom was proud of me. After I got all my work caught up I played xbox with my friend and told them why I was gone for a long time. They felt really bad and some cried. As soon as I went back to school I joined basketball and weights to get my leg stronger. By one month my leg was healed and stronger. I was already stronger than most kids in my grade. Ever since my accident happened every body has been my friend and nice to me. My mom picked me up from school. She said “we are moving as soon as i got in the car.” My face was priceless I was shocked, disappointed. But ever since i came back it has been so smooth and nice. Can you please tell me why we are moving

“NO.”

Just let me figure this out myself.

“Ok.”

When we got home my mom said “There are some guys following me and watching me.

“Who is it”.

“No there is a tall black guy and a small white guy.” So in the morning we are leaving .

“Ok.”

As soon as the sun came out we were packed and ready to go. At 6:30 we were on the road. We stopped at the gas station and saw the guys. They came over to the car and said. “Here is your ring you dropped on the hospital.”

“How did you know I was there.”

“We were behind you.”

“Ok thanks.”

“Your welcome.”

Now we know why the criminals were after us.

                                                                 Emily

Every orphan asks themselves the same question, “Why did my parents put me up for adoption?” I have asked myself ever since I was here. Today will be my 6th year I was dropped off at the orphanage in New York. When I was three I was dropped off here. And now I was nine.

“EMILY!!” I heard from downstairs.

I quickly jumped off the bay window dashed to my bed as quietly as I could so Ms.Bay would not hear me. Then I quickly grabbed the book from Riley’s bed, flopped onto my bed open to a page and started staring at the first word on the page intensely and tried reading it.

Ms.Bay walked in then looked at me with hands on her hips.  Ms.Bay was in charge of two others rooms including ours which were filled with sixteen kids each. She was 21 even though she looked like she was in highschool with how skinny and short she was. And she always had the perfect amount of makeup and the cutest matching outfits. But we, on the other hand had to wear the same thing every day (stupid uniforms)it was a long sleeve white shirt folded at the the end of the sleeve , Navy blue and red  striped flannel dress with tights, white sock lased at the top and black leathered shoes. The outfit looks like a common private school outfit. Which doesn’t surprise me. Since this is an abandoned four story (with a basement) private school. When they saw a bigger, better school. The school board  choose that so they could charge more and put in new things like archery, swimming, tennis, and ice skating.

“Um”,  Ms.Bay said again hands still on her hips, “ you should be outside at recess. And why are you reading a cookbook I thought you were not interested in cooking,” she said sitting on the end of the bed. I laid the book back where it was supposed to be and stood up so I was no longer laying down but sitting.

“I have no one to talk to or play with,” I said looking straight at the floor.

“You can always talk to me and there is no excuse for not wanting to talk or play with anyone, since the whole orphanage is down there,” she sighed “I know the Carly thing has  made you sad but it’s time to move on and make new friends.”

I kept looking at the floor she was right. Carley, was a girl here that I became really good friends with. We were together for 5 years then one day on visiting Wednesday. A young couple came in and saw us playing through the windows. Every wednesday, they would come back with cupcakes, coloring books and crayons, and a bunch of other goodies. By that time I started noticing that they weren’t here for both us. They were here for Carley they would always make sure she was ok and if everything was fine. Until, one day  when they decided to adopt her. I still couldn’t believe even though I saw it coming the only thing I had was taken away. But she was my friend so I couldn’t feel upset. When she left she promised to visit and she did for three weeks until she moved away. It has been two months now and every time I think about it makes me want to cry.

“Okay, the truth is I do miss her but I didn’t go down to recess because of that. I have been really tired lately,” I said and that was the truth and Ms.Bay knew that by the look on my face.

“What’s wrong? Is everything alright?  Lately you have been pretty tired have you been sleeping late,” she asked worried.

“I know I have been sleeping well but sometimes it’s hard for me to get out of bed and I get really tired sometimes,” I said this time looking at her.

“All right this time you can stay up here but, next time here come outside and get some fresh air,” she felt my head “ You  might be getting a fever even though your head doesn’t feel that hot, get some rest we have 30 more minutes left of recess,” I laid down and Ms.Bay helped me tuck in then, she bent down and gave me a kiss on the forehead (I could smell makeup and Ms. Bay favorite scent SOHO Nights.) and then I was out.

When I woke up I saw everyone was in bed wearing their white night gowns. Ms. Bay came in gave me a smile and rang the tiny bell    “Ding-a-Ding Ding-a-Ding” it was time to get up. Had I been asleep that long?

Brooklyn came over and chirped up

“ Good morning sleepy head,”  then laughed. She was the closest friend I had here.

I yawned and said “I’m Tired,” She gave me a confused look and said

“How can you still be tired if you slept since 5:00,” I shrugged. I started to make my bed when I heard my stomach rumbling. I have not eaten anything since lunch ended and our 3:00 snack.

Everyone was rushing to the showers. A typical Wednesday thing. Wednesdays are the days people in the adoption process come (or random other people to see us). Everyone always got super excited. Me on the other hand didn’t care I’ve been here long enough to know that they shoot for the youngest and prettiest girls. They usually brought things for certain girls they were thinking to adopted.

After my turn in the shower. I practically ran downstairs, I was so hungry. Thank goodness today was waffles my favorite. I wasn’t a big eater so to start with I got a waffle some strawberries and milk. You would have thought I could have eaten more since I was so hungry but I was fine.

Finally, They took us all to the visitor area just like always. It used to be a gym but instead they have rows of white tables with seats along both sides. All the girls sit on one side and the visitors walk around or sit on the other end to get to know us meanwhile we’re coloring, reading, or playing. I usually never get visitors at our table sometimes it’s not even for me but the people beside me. I was coloring away drawing a flower and a couple came to sit. It was a young lady with brunette hair, glasses, and she looked like a teacher. The young man had brown hair, dimples, and wore a little pair wings on his left shoulder which meant he was a pilot. As they sat down the gave ear to ear smiles. I gave a small smile back. It was pretty quiet as they watched me, Brooklyn, and Megan.

“Hi,” The lady told us. “I’m Stefhanie and this is my husband Emmet. What’s your names?”,

I looked at the other girls who had not said anything and then calmly said

“Hi, I’m Emily,” They smiled.

“Nice to meet you Emily,” Emmet kindly said. I gave a quick smile and went back to drawing. And they went back to watching us. Sometimes I would look up and they would look at me with a warm smiles then whisper about something.

After the visit, Brooklyn ran up to me. And screamed

“They liked you,” She screamed.

“What? Who are you talking about?” I asked curiously

“The young couple I saw them they were  talking to Mrs. Abigail,”She explained.

Mrs. Abigail was the one in charge of the orphanage and adoptions.

And even if they did talk to her there is hundreds of girls at this orphanage and they probably saw some else they liked but there was no chance it was me.

The next day, I had a bad fever. My throat hurt,my nose was running, and every time I got up I felt a little dizzy. Sometimes I would get what felt like small shooting pains up through my legs and arms.

Ms.Bay took me to the nurse. The nurse did some usual test such as taking my height, testing my reflexes and my weight. She looked at me and said I had lost some weight from 68 to 59.9. She asked me a lot of questions such as; “Have you been eating well? or “Have you been exercising?” I have not notice that I been losing weight the only time I do is when I exercise really hard. And I am not an athletic kind of person.

After that I got to sleep for awhile which made me happy and my pain started to become worse. My sickness didn’t go away till tuesday I had also lost another pound but the nurse  help me gain two back.

Once again it was wednesday, the pain had not gone away it had also started to hurt when I walk it was also hard to keep my weight up. But it was the same usual visiting day in the gym.

This time I was drawing my dream room. When I saw Stefhanie and Emmett they were walking towards us and Emmett was holding a bag. When they sat down.

He asked us

“Do you guys like cupcakes?”,

We nodded and grabbed a pink box from the bag.

“Do you guys like Vanilla?”, he asked pulling out five cupcakes and giving it to us as we nodded. After we said our “Thank you’s” and “You Welcomes” we had a bite. As I bit into the cupcake It reminded me of the time Carley’s parents brought us some making me feel like Emmet and Stefhanie were not here for me.We started talking about our favorite flavors, and colors and by the time we were all so into the conversation it was time to go.

Even though I have only seen them two times. I had kind of gotten use to them. That week wasn’t any better when I was at the nurse for my usual check ups I was weighing 57 and my pain ached so bad sometimes I almost could not get out of bed. Sometimes it felt like my legs snap as I was walking. And If I were to fall I’d cry or I was so tired I wanted to lay down on the the floor and fall asleep. Every few days I would go to the nurse but her and Bay would talk with watery eyes for a long time and then they would tell me that the pain had to deal with me growing up and handed me my disgusting flavor medicine.

But I was not dumb to know that they weren’t telling me the truth. The only thing I had on my mind since then is what did I really have? Why do I have pain?

Before I knew it, Emmett and Stefhanie came to me with excited looks. They also asked to sit at a table with me alone. (Visitors usually asked to but I never got chosen.)

Once we were alone they started to talk.

“How would you like to come home with us,”Stefhanie asked excitedly.

My jaw dropped, my head ached or I was just really tired but I didn’t know what to believe. Was this a dream. I started to cry. Have I had never came across the thought I would be adopted by them. I shook my head as a sigh of yes and sobbed.

“I would love to,”

They looked at me with sad looking eyes.

“Now it might take a week or two get all the paper signed and ready. And then you can be ours,” She explained looking like she was about to cry herself. I asked lots of questions just like any girl does.

“Do you guys have pets?”, or “Where do you live?”, I asked. I asked so many questions I had lost track of time to go. When it was time to go to recess I gave them a big hug then walked back to Ms. Bay with a grin. She smiled at me, she must  have known all this time. Maybe that's why her eyes were watering she was probably sad to see me go.

I limped to recess because my legs ached so bad. Once I was at recess I decide to go to the swings and enjoy the fresh air. But I really needed to go to the bathroom. As I walked in it felt much cooler. The bathrooms where down the hall to the left I took a deep breath inhaling the thought that was quite a walk and I my legs would be killing me. Finally, I had reached the bathrooms. After that,I took a sip of water from the fountain before my long journey back.On my way back I saw Mrs. Abigail talking to Emmett and Stefhanie. They were at a table Stefhanie was crying. And Emmett was standing behind her. My heart sank, wondering what was wrong had I asked too many questions.

All of the sudden I saw them glance at me I didn’t want them to see me spying on me. I turn around as fast as I can and started to run. But all of the sudden it felt like my feet locked up and snapped. The next thing I knew it I was on the ground. And shooting pain came from my legs. I couldn’t help it but scream and cry in pain. The last thing I saw was Mrs.Abigail,Stefhanie, and Emmett running out of the room and Emmett picking me up.

When I woke up I saw Ms.Bay, Stefhanie, and Emmett with dark under eye circles and red eyes. Must had slept a lot again. My legs were sore and I still felt small shooting pains up my legs.

“What happened?”,I asked rubbing my eyes.

“You just slipped on something and you bumped your head hard you past out.”, she said in a worried look. She looked at the rest of them and nodded they started to leave.

“I have some good news you get to come home with us wednesday the 21st,” she said I thought to myself that’s one week from now. Exactly, 7 days from now.

“Why so soon I thought I had to wait at least a month,” I asked suddenly surprised.

“Something came up but that doesn’t matter the important thing is you get to come home with me earlier,” she added.

As I moved I felt something on my legs something hard, cold, and plastic with some velcro attached to it.

“What’s on my legs?”,I said uncovering myself from all blankets on me.

“It’s to help keep your balance that’s all,” she stated.

I nodded not quite believing her.

“I have to go to the bathroom,”I said not really needing to I just wanted to see what they had put on my legs and if I could fall.

As I turned to get up I felt my feet come down with a “Thud” they have become very heavy. And the pain started back up again as I stood up. I took small steps each one with their very own shoots of pain up through my thighs. I tried my best not to fall but it was kind of hard when your legs felt like they were going to snap. When I finally go to the door I quickly closed it behind me. When i made sure it was close I clasped to the floor. All of the sudden I saw my dress one or two inches away from my chest I was pretty sure you could see my ribs by now. And I felt like i had no force any more.

When I came back out everyone was in the room again. Once I was tucked into bed. They told me I would have to rest and eat healthy for a couple of days. I didn’t think that was very hard for me because I felt like that was the only thing I could do.

The next couple days was eat, sleep, eat, sleep. Walking hadn’t got any easier but harder. And at night my pain get even worse all I can do is scream and cry into my pillow. Ms. Bay will bring me tylenol, water, and sing to me.

On monday the pain had reached my body screaming and aching that’s all  I did. Ms.Bay would rush in and out trying to help me telling me everything was going to be alright. But by now I knew something wasn’t right.

On Tuesday, the pain went down a slight notch in the morning giving me a chance to pack up all my things and say good bye to my friends (and I teared up every now and then)

Emmet and Stephanie came and we talked about our big day tomorrow. Before my pain start up again. But this time it felt like it was on steriods.I could not handle it anymore. “AHAHAHAH,” I screamed.

It was like that all night. Finally, the last things I heard was the siren of an ambulance. The last thing on my mind was that I never go to know what I really had and I never go to had a real family. The last shooting pain I got was the one before I heard the sound of the machine go “beeeeep”.

It was a nice October day in the year of 2012. Although for me it was a bad day even before I received the news. I was outside raking leaves, the wind was cold, but I was the type of person who enjoyed the cold even with the wind. It was around noon and I chose to go inside and eat some leftovers for lunch. As I walked in the house I noticed my father on the couch looking even worse than usual. The reason why is what set the gloomy mood for these days. My father was suffering with stage four colon cancer. He was on chemotherapy and was sadly going to pass soon according to Dr. Thompson.

We were in the hospital room and Dr. Thompson gave us a choice bring him home or leave him here. My family and I choice to bring him home of course. Once we had arrived home my brother, Anthony had started to cry uncontrollably. Shortly after my mother whispered,

“Quiet down.” Once inside my brother and I went to our rooms just waiting until the moment came. It was around four in the afternoon and I knew that I couldn't eat dinner because I had felt as if I just had lunch. I then heard my mother call me in the living room. When I entered I noticed my grandma crying along with my mom and my brother not anywhere to be seen. I then glanced over at my dad to find him perfectly still. I then heard my mom speak in a quiet voice, “It happened.” I quickly ran over to the couch to take in what had just happened. It was true, my father had passed. My mom then called my uncle to take us out of the house. My uncle took my brother and I to walmart to pick out anything under forty dollars. Once we had finished shopping and arrived at the house my mom told me that dad had been pronounced gone at 5:30pm Saturday October of 2012. I then went to my room and laid there for almost the rest of the weekend with the exception of eating and drinking. After my grieving stage was over I decided to get out of the house and go to the park.

I walked downtown then into the entrance of the Versailles Park. I then walked over to an old, rusty bench and sat down. In my head I was remembering all of the years I had with my father. I then thought to myself nine years is a lot and you can never forget memories.I then was awakened out of my trance by someone tapping me on the shoulder. I then turned around and saw nothing. I imagined it was probably nothing. As I walked home I began to feel better when I realized “with every bad thing something good always comes out.” Once I arrived home I went to the kitchen and looked out the patio door at a small picnic table located in my yard that was constructed by my father.

I was about to daydream again when I heard my mom in a quiet voice behind me say, “Hey we all have our time your father’s just came a little early.” I suddenly felt a little better. After all, mom always knew what to say in situations like these. The following week I had school and was in 3rd grade, Mr. Fischer's class. Although he had no idea what had happened or at least I thought. We had the funeral Wednesday the week after that and Mr. Fisher along with all the other teachers came. My mother had spotted them three rows back from the first row.

Once the funeral started and music played the announcer said “and here is Scott’s son with some words to say. I then wondered if he was referring to me or my brother. I quickly realized it was me after he motioned me to the stage. I then got up and walked up to the podium and said, “Life's too short to be sad, tragedies are heartbreaking yes, but just remember you will always have, “Memories.”

“Hey Sharon” said Kristy her hands clammy. She began shaking not visible to the eye. Thoughts began racing through her mind abundantly. “Hey Kristy” Sharon said as a smile spread across her face. Why is she smiling at me? Does she not know what the whole school knows? Thought Kristy.  Kristy grew anxious as Sharon approached her.

Sharon was about five one, long brown hair with a crème completion. She wore light blue jeans that looked like they were painted on her skin, with a gray baggy long sleeve shirt, and white air force ones. Sharon held her books in her hand as her purse hung from her left shoulder. “H-Hey where are you headed?”  Kristy said becoming more and more skittish. “To biology” Sharon’s emerald green eyes glistened as if they were stars in the night sky.

“I heard about what had happened” Kristy began.  Sharon looked down “I know I know” replied Sharon in a low tone. Kristy looked around and took a step back as kids started to unload off the bus “I-I got to go” announced Kristy. Kristy walked away expeditiously almost tripping over her long white skirt. Kristy wore a blue tank top that stopped at her belly button reviling her belly button ring, a long white skirt that flowed in the wind, and light brown cowgirl boots.

She had a unique mocha completion. Her long black curls bouncing with every step she took. Kristy held her head down as she walked clinching her English book. I shouldn’t have walked away like that. She is supposed to be my friend. What if she needs my help? Thoughts flooded Kristy’s mind as she continued to walk away. Kristy and Sharon use to be best friends until this summer, the summer of their 11th grade year.  That was the year Sharon would never forget

3months earlier

Ring ring Sharon looked over to her phone and saw the picture of her and Kristy pop up.

Hello

Yeah girl are you getting ready?

Yea you must be ready to go huh?

Girl you already know wassup haha

Iight we will be on our way in a little

Sharon hung up the phone and looked in her closet. Sharon pulled out a pair of high waist pants with a white turtle neck crop top that stopped at her belly button and showed her sparkling blue belly button ring. She and Kristy got their belly button pierced on the same day after school got out on the 13th on June.  She slipped on her clothes and looked under her bed for the right shoe box that had her pink and white Jordans in them. Just as she was putting on her shoes her brother Jamal knocked on her door.

“Come in” yelled Sharon. Just as she told him to come in the bedroom door opened and in walked Jamal. Jamal had on a blue, yellow, and white Ralph Lauren shirt, all white pants, and blue and white Jordans. “You trying to match my fly, it’s okay though lil sis we can shut it down together” Jamal said with a grin on his face. “Boy whatever if anything you are trying to match my fly” Sharon said grabbing her purse. “Any who lets go, Kristy is waiting on us” Sharon and jamal walked down the stairs and out the front door to the all-white mustang that had a red strip down the middle.

Sharon and Jamal pulled up to Kristy’s house and honked the horn three times. Kristy walked out with a black leather skater skirt, a plaid blue and black button up shirt, black and white converse. Kristy got in the back seat and pulled out her compact mirror. Kristy had on liquid eye liner with the wings on both eyes, fake eyelashes, and blue lipstick that matched the plaid in her shirt. “Girl you look pretty” stated Sharon with a smile “yea yea I know “Kristy said with a little laughter erupting in her voice.

After a 10 minute drive they arrived at the local jump off in their town.  When they entered the room everybody was coupled up and dancing on each other having fun. “iight so I’m about to go talk to shorty over there hit me up when you ready to leave” said Jamal walking toward a dark complected   female sitting in the corner with her friends.

Sharon and Kristy laughed and began walking to the back of the club. When they made it to the back of the club they started to dance and laugh.  While dancing Kristy looked over to her right and saw a tall caramel complected boy. He had on a red, black, and white button up shirt that was open just enough to see his white tee shirt.

“Girl look” stated Kristy “what” said Sharon still in her zone dancing. “You have a little friend” Kristy said a smile propped on her face. Sharon raised her head up and looked around. Just as she looked to her right she saw somebody walking up to her

Hey beautiful

Uhh hey

My name is Xavier what is your name?

Sharon

Do you mind me buying you a drink from the bar?

No, I don’t drink sorry

Do you dance?

Sharon laughed slightly. She glanced up to look him in his eyes and noticed he had light brown eyes. She didn’t want to admit it but she was attracted to his looks and the smoothness of his tone. Sharon looked at Kristy and Kristy looked back. Kristy nudged her a little on her arm. “Yes I do dance” said Sharon.  Xavier held out his hand for Sharon to grab on to. He escorted her to the middle of the dance floor and started dancing.

At about 12 at night the Jump off started to empty out. Sharon and Xavier exchanged numbers and parted their separate ways. Kristy had left the jump off at 10:30 she had to be at work by 11:00. Sharon waited at the mustang for her elder brother.

I see you feeling good about yourself

You already know little sis, but I see I’m not the only one who had a good time tonight

What you talking about Jamal

I saw you with ole boy over there what’s his name ….uhhh XAVIER!

What you mean how you know him

I don’t know

JAMAL!

Hahaha I know him from one of my home boys

Sharon and jamal hopped in the car laughing and talking about her new found friend. When they got back to the house Sharon took a shower and went to sleep. The next morning Sharon woke up to her phone ringing.

Hello

Good morning beautiful

Xavier

Yea it’s me how did you sleep last night

Good I guess what about you

I slept good. I was wondering if you wanted to go out with me for breakfast

Sure that sounds good let me get ready

Okay call me when you are done so I can come pick you up.

Later that night Sharon found herself stretched out in someone else’s bed. She looked over onto the night stand to grab her phone and instead found a note that read:

Good evening beautiful,

I hope you slept good I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you woke up, but my job had called in. on the other hand I had a lot of fun with you this morning and afternoon. I hope to see you again and soon. Oh and by the way your phone is on the charger down stairs by the tv.

Sharon laid back in the bed a smile spread across her face as she remembers the evenings events. I’ve never felt like this before is this real this can’t be he is so sweet. Thoughts abruptly started racing through her mind. Sharon eventually got up and put on her clothes. She called her brother to come get. When Sharon made it back home it was 8:30pm. Sharon glanced at her phone and noticed she had 5 missed calls 4 from Kristy and 1 from Xavier.

Present Day

Sharon sat in the doctor’s office awaiting the doctor’s arrival. It had been 2 months since she had seen Xavier. He had stop coming around and calling after he found out Sharon was pregnant. He told Sharon he had too much to lose and didn’t want anything to do with the baby. Even Kristy stopped talking to her after she found out Sharon was pregnant.

Maybe it was because she found out with the rest of the school, but Sharon was scared. She was only 16 in the 11th grade she didn’t know what to do or who to turn to. For a while she was in denial for weeks. How could she tell somebody else if she didn’t even want to believe it herself? After 2 weeks Sharon had finally told her mother and brother. Her mom was disappointed that it happened to her daughter this young.

On a different note her brother was excited to be an uncle, but mad that the father didn’t step up. As she sat there on the bed the doctor walked in. “Well the test came back and everything is fine and steady” Sharon got up from the bed and took off the hospital gown and put back on her clothes. Even though she was too young to have a baby she vowed to be the best mother ever.
