Matt Feazell: Comics to Screenplay

Hamtramck Cartoonist Matt Feazell will be at the Downtown Library on Friday, September 30 from 7:00-8:30 pm to talk about how he turned his comic strip into a movie. Join us for a chance to speak to the artist AND a sneak peek of clips from the movie: The Amazing Cynicalman. Feazell has been creating comics since the Carter administration. He was a regular contributor to Disney Adventures magazine (before the magazine was discontinued in 2007) and appears as a character in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics.

Comics’ writer Dan Mishkin to present at Comic Artists Forum

Guest artist Dan Mishkin will talk about what a comic book writer does, and how it's important to think visually and to understand how comics work -- valuable information for writers, but also for artists. From 1982 to 1985 Dan was member of the writing team for Wonder Woman. More recently Dan is the co-creator of the comic book series "Amethyst", "Blue Devil", "Creeps" and "Spellgame", and author of the children's illustrated novel "The Forest King."
Join the Forum to get fresh ideas for your next comics or graphic novel creation. Drawing supplies will be provided, so drop in for drawing, learning, and sharing.

Cartoonist Jay Fosgitt kicks off Comics Artists Forum

On September 11 Comic Artists Forum welcomes artist Jay P. Fosgitt the creator the graphic novel "Dead Duck". Check out Jay’s projects to learn more about his "Little Green Men", "Bodie Troll", coming in 2012, and other creations. Jay will share a slide show covering the evolution of his career and do some live sketching, drawing some of his characters and even drawing caricatures of some audience members.
Come to the Comic Artist Forum to learn how other comic artists get their start and get fresh ideas for your next comics or graphic novel creation. Drawing supplies will be provided, so drop in for drawing, learning, and sharing. This event is for adults and teens (grade 6 and up).

Author Birthdays: Potter, Ashbery, Davis

July 28th marks the birthday of authors Beatrix Potter, John Ashbery, and Jim Davis.
Beatrix Potter was an English author known for her children's books, most notably The Tale of Peter Rabbit. There are actually over 20 tales of Peter Rabbit and his fellows, like Mrs. Tittlemouse and Mr. Tod.
Potter's other works include The Fairy Caravan, about a guinea pig who runs away from home to join the circus, and the sort-of-autobiography Letters to Children From Beatrix Potter, edited by Judy Taylor.
John Ashbery is an American poet. According to the Academy of American Poets, he has won nearly every major American award for poetry, and has quite a few other awards as well.
Ashbery's collections include the Griffin Poetry Prize winner Notes From the Air, and the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle and National Book Award winning Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror.
Jim Davis is an American cartoonist. You've probably at least heard of his most famous strip, Garfield. In addition to the actual strip, he also helped to write and produce the many TV shows, specials, and CGI movies starring the lazy cat.
While his main cartoon is Garfield, Davis also wrote U.S. Acres, also called Orson's Farm, which you still might recognize if you have ever watched the animated series Garfield And Friends.

Hyboria's Next Top Barbarian

Conan the Barbarian is turning 80 this year. He was born in the early ‘30s to Robert E. Howard, a writer for Weird Tales, and immediately became a hero to legions of fans. The beefy barbarian has spent eight decades adventuring throughout the ancient world of Hyboria, battling sorcerers, evil warlords, monsters, and more than a few femme fatales. Read about his adventures in the original series of novels, and continue the journey with the ongoing graphic novel series.
Conan is celebrating his octogenarianism by returning to the silver screen this August in Conan the Barbarian. Portrayed by Jason Momoa, (most recently of Game of Thrones fame) our favorite Cimmerian will continue doing what he does best, busting heads and going primordial on his enemies.

Learn the basic techniques for creating unique characters – from anthropomorphic animals to inanimate objects brought to life – with Jannie Ho, children’s illustrator and cartoonist. Drawing materials are provided.
To get a taste of the possibilities when using anthropomorphic characters read Jannie’s If You Lived Here which has toured the country as part of the 2011 Sketchbook Project. It provides a window into Ann Arbor through a newcomer’s eyes and shows that you can create wonderful stories using animals in place of human characters.
