Make Your Own Board Game

Calling all kids in grades K - 5 to come use your imaginations to make your own board game.
On Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m at the Pittsfield Branch we'll have all the boards and supplies
that you need to map out an adventure. Build your own game board, write your own rules, invent
your own characters.

SPECIAL EVENT: Dr. Bob's Soundschool and AADL's Music Tools Collection Launch Party

Learn about the science of sound with Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, presented by the Bob Moog Foundation!

Experience the magic of electronic music while exploring the physics of sound generation and travel; the intertwining of ideas and invention; and the history of Moog Music. This event includes hands-on experimentation with electronic instruments like theremins, synthesizers and oscilloscopes.

Participants will also be the very first to check out AADL's circulating Music Tools collection. The mtools collection features musical gear that you can check out from the Library, from such noted manufacturers as Moog, Korg, Maywa Denki, Bleep Labs, Chamber of Sounds, Folktek, Critter & Guitari and more!

Cold-Blooded Creatures -- Thursday July 26, 2012: 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm -- Traverwood Branch -- Grades K-12


Experience live snakes, toads, salamanders, and turtles and learn more about their adaptations, behavior, and physical structure with Leslie Science & Nature Center staff. Also, learn more about the aquatic invertebrates that live in the summer exhibit at Traverwood! This event is intended for graded K-12.

Night Crew - Saturday July 21- Pittsfield Branch - 1-2pm and again from 3-4pm - Grades K-12

What's it like to be a nighttime predator? We'll learn about the habitats, adaptations, life cycles, conservation, food webs and classification of nocturnal birds when three owls visit from the Leslie Science & Nature Center. Don't miss this great opportunity to get a close view of a Barn Owl, Eastern Screech Owl and a Barred Owl. This event will be offered twice in its entirety, once from 1-2pm and again from 3-4pm. The first show tends to fill up quickly, so you may want to plan on attending the 3-4pm performance to get a better seat. This event is intended for grades K-12.

Nature's Recyclers: Vultures, Rats & Roaches - Tuesday July 17, 2012 - Pittsfield Branch - 1-2pm - Grades K-12

Learn to love nature’s unhuggables with a visit from a turkey vulture, rat, and cockroaches from the Leslie Science & Nature Center. If you've wanted to get a closer look at the roaches from the Pittsfield exhibit, then now's you chance, and there may even be an impressive new species brought along as well. We'll discover the important role of scavengers and recyclers in our everyday lives as we learn about habitats, adaptations, life cycles, conservation, food webs, classification, decomposers, scavengers and recycling. This event is intended for grades K-12.

Ventriloquist Vikki Gasko returns to Ann Arbor!

Ventriloquist Vikki Gasko returns to Ann Arbor for two performances on Tuesday, July 10, 2012!
She'll be Downtown at 2:00 p.m and at the Traverwood Branch at 7:00 p.m.
If you saw her last summer, you'll want to come back and see her again. If you didn't see
her, now is your chance. She is an amazing performer!!

The Caterpillar Eggs Have Hatched! Come Visit the Caterpillars!

The Cecropia Moth eggs have hatched, and we have a batch of fuzzy little 1st instar caterpillars happily munching away on Black Walnut leaves. The 1st instar will only last for about 1 week, so visit Malletts Creek soon if you want to see them before they molt and start developing some very colorful patterns. There's also a new game code worth 200 points to celebrate the arrival of the caterpillars.

If you were around last summer, you know this is only the beginning! There are mystery items yet to be revealed, super packages waiting in the wings, and if you've been paying close attentions, constant hints about some kind of SECRET SHOP coming later this month!

You can spend any available Summer Game points in the shop, even the ones you might have left over from Summer Game 2011, and you can pay from an extra player's points if you'd like! Please note that Points-o-matic points and Treasure Quest points are not Summer Game Points and don't count towards your available shop balance, which is shown right there at the top of your player page for your reference. Shop orders are filled weekly, so watch your email or phone for a notification that your order is ready for pickup, then just ask for your order at the desk at your chosen pickup location!

Happy Birthday, America!

It's time for our annual star-spangled holiday. It's time to celebrate America's 236th birthday.
Come to the Pittsfield Branch Library on Tuesday, July 3rd from 2:00-3:00 p.m. to make some decorations for your party.
We'll have some ideas of projects you can do, but you will be free to make anything you want out
of our red, white and blue supplies. This is for preschool - grade 5.

Make Your Own Tutu!


Would you like to make and own your very own tutu? Join us for a Tutu Making Workshop at 2pm on June 28th, in the Multipurpose Room at the Downtown Library! We’ll have all the materials you need to make your very own no-sew tutu out of tulle and ribbon of various colors.
