An Overview of Special Education and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) - NEW LOCATION

Monday October 19, 2015: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Pittsfield Branch: Program Room

Due to a malfunction in the lighting system at Malletts Creek, this event has been moved to Pittsfield Branch.

This discussion, presented by the Washtenaw Association for Community Advocacy (Washtenaw ACA) and the Michigan Alliance for Families (MAF), is designed for parents of children who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or who may be eligible for special education, as well as interested community members including school staff, college students studying education or related programs, and anyone who works with or cares about children who have disabilities.

This session will be presented by Kristen Columbus, M.S. and Sandee Koski, M.A. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

Game On!

Looking for something to do in your spare time? The wind, snow and frigid temperatures make it challenging to enjoy the outdoors this time of year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun! The AADL has more than just books to keep you and the family entertained.

If you’re looking to get out of the house, there are two great events coming up for you! Saturday,November 22, there is a Family Board Game Bash at 2:00 at the Pittsfield Branch. The following Saturday, December 6th, you can join us at Traverwood to Learn To Play Mahjongg with a local enthusiast to help you learn along the way.

Maybe you want to keep it cozy at home? Check out the Unusual Stuff in our catalog- maybe you’d like to go big and play Giant Dominoes or Giant Checkers? Or, get your warm weather game on point and borrow a Portable Disc Golf Basket. Whatever your fancy, game on friends!

Winter work arounds

Michigan winters can be tough, especially when it comes to staying in shape. So why not develop a good at-home practice before we get snowed in?! Yoga is the perfect solution for combating the winter blues, keeping your energy levels up and extra pounds off the scale!

The AADL collection has options for everyone; monthly magazine selections, reading materials to develop and deepen your practice, and DVD’s for those looking to work on flexibility, strength or improve your sense of self. You can even experience yoga IN your library! Keep an eye on the events calendar for future programs, and be sure to join us next week at the Pittsfield branch for a children's yoga class!

Join us Tuesday evening for "Using Yoga for Stress Reduction!"

This Tuesday, August 26, at the Pittsfield branch of the AADL, yoga instructor Victoria Duranona will host a Kundalini yoga program from 7:00 to 8:30pm. With an emphasis on the use of yoga to reduce stress, this program will teach participants how to be aware of stressors in our lives and about how these stressors influence us, our communication and our relationships. Victoria will then lead the group in some meditation and yoga exercises.

Wear comfortable clothing and bring your own mat to this program.

To get ready for AADL's Make-A-Wand Workshop at the Pittsfield branch, stop by the 4th Annual Fairy Festival at the Sunday Artisan Market in Kerrytown. If you need inspiration for your making, be sure to browse our collection featuring these sometimes mischievous, magical, winged creatures.

Amazing Magazines!

Whether you call them periodicals, zines or just plain magazines you will find some cool selections in the aadl magazine collection which, except for the current issue, can be put on hold with your library card and borrowed for two weeks. Titles like Michigan Riparian, Pointe, Bee Culture, Brick Journal, Treasures, Babybug, Cheng Ming, Scrapbooking & Beyond, G.I. jobs, or a multitude of popular glossies can be browsed at the library or at aadl.org. That’s also where you can click on Research and use the General Reference Center Gold database for magazines that we no longer carry. No matter what you call them, AADL has a magazine for everyone!

Family Science Workshop

Join us on Saturday, February 15th from 10 - 11 AM at the Pittsfield branch for our second Family Science Workshop, brought to us by the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History. This workshop will be Meals with Megafauna: Sabertooth Cats, Dire Wolves, Mastodons & Man. Come learn about the strategies used by predators and prey to stay alive during the ice age. The workshop is intended for children in grades K-5, accompanied by an adult.

We also have plenty of ice age items in our collection, and don't forget to check out our Sabertooth Cat kit from our Science Tools collection.

Once Upon a Winter's Day 2014

Being caught in the clutches of another polar vortex is no fun. So let's liven things up.
Come to the family storytime Once Upon a Winter's Day, 2014 version. It will be at
the Pittsfield Branch on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
We'll tell snow stories, polka like penguins, sing songs, sip hot chocolate and do a craft that's perfect for our sub-zero temperatures. Bring the whole family for an afternoon of winter fun.

MLK Event: Author/Illustrator Bryan Collier at AADL

We are very fortunate to be able to host author/illustrator Bryan Collier at AADL!!! He will be appearing at the Pittsfield Branch on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

Mr. Collier has illustrated three titles that have garnered him Caldecott honors. He has won the illustrator medal of the Coretta Scott King Awards three times and had honor books another three times. His King Awards were for Rosa, Uptown, and Dave the Potter, Artist, Poet, Slave.

Start off the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day by coming to see this very talented illustrator.
