Bright Nights Community Forum: Connections Between Substance Use And Depression In Adolescents

Young people sometimes turn to alcohol and other drugs to cope with life's frustrations, to fit in, rebel, or to satisfy their curiosity about drugs and drinking. Teens with depression or other mental health disorders are particularly vulnerable. Many fail to recognize that they are depressed and may be using alcohol and other drugs as a way to self-medicate.

To provide greater understanding about the relationship between substance use and depression in adolescents, the UM Depression Center will present this Bright Nights Community Forum. Mary Jo Desprez, Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy and Prevention Administrator for the UM Health Service, and Dr. Daniel Gih, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the UM Medical School, will co-present a brief overview on adolescent depression, substance use, and the relationship between the two. A question and discussion with a panel of experts will follow.

Presented by Arbor Hospice's Grief Support Services, this one-hour educational meeting will provide you with the resources and information you are looking for when coping with the loss of a loved one. The session will help examine what is normal during the grief process, strategies for coping, suggestions for self-care, and what support is available to you. There will also be time for questions at the end.

Free ADHD Workshop

The Institute for Human Adjustment at the University Center for the Child and the Family will be hosting a parent education workshop on ADHD and other learning disabilities. Attendees will learn practical strategies for handling the challenges their families face and will also receive an opportunity to share ideas, resources, and support with people experiencing similar issues. TeaHaus of Ann Arbor presents a tea-tasty, educational event. Learn about the ever-expanding world of tea from black, green, white, herbal and fruit to the hot new "tea" Rooibos. You will get to taste some exquisite samples, too!

TeaHaus is a small business owned by Lisa McDonald and her husband Marc Hewko. They work with Europe's most reputable and highest-quality tea company, located in Germany. TeaHaus now carries over 200 loose teas, from varieties of tea by region to those teas blended with fruits, herbals, and the occasional natural extract. They also stock a unique and interesting collection of tea ware and tea preparation tools.

This event is for adults and teens (grade 6 and up).

Ann Arbor Film Festival Archive

In celebration of the Ann Arbor Film Festival's 50th year, AADL has partnered with the AAFF to launch the Ann Arbor Film Festival Archive, an online collection of the Festival's history. Here you can browse through past programs or flyers and posters reaching back to the Festival's origins in 1963. The site also includes photographs, historical newspaper articles from the Ann Arbor News and Ann Arbor Sun, and interviews. (Look for additional interviews with past festival directors and visiting filmmakers to appear leading up to and following the 50th anniversary.)

Housing Access for Washtenaw County

One of the agencies that's been instrumental in housing & services to the homeless in Washtenaw County for decades, SOS Community Services, will be closing from September 21st -September 30th. When the doors re-open they will be called Housing Access For Washtenaw County. This means the Food Pantry at SOS will close on Tuesday September 27th and will resume Tuesday October 4th under its new name, Housing Access for Washtenaw County. We will keep you posted as more details are announced.
