Music in the Park

Is the most mentally stimulating part of your lunch break the surprise of turkey on rye instead of turkey on wheat? No more! The Herb David Guitar Studio is highlighting local musicians on the Liberty Plaza throughout the summer. Music plays from noon until 2 pm, Monday through Saturday, and is free of charge. So take your turkey on wheat down, enjoy some sunshine, and support your local musicians.

Meanwhile tap your inner-musician by checking out AADL's collection of books on how to play the guitar, piano, and even the harmonica!

Art Fair is looming and getting out of town sounds like a plan. The Purple Rose Theatre Company is currently featuring "Sea of Fools" through September 1. Matt Letscher directs the world premiere of his play, set in the McCarthy era, about a group of actors mourning the death of their leader. When an undercover FBI agent infiltrates the funeral in the guise of a gossip columnist's assistant, the actors freely admit to being Communists, but when Elia Kazan also joins the group, it's anyone's guess what will happen. The cast includes Sandra Birch, John Lepard, Janet Maylie, John Seibert, and Guy Sanville. Purple Rose, 137 Park St., Chelsea. 433-7673.

"13th Annual Rolling Sculpture Car Show": Main Street Area Association. Local car owners are invited to bring their antique, classic, concept, or unusual autos to this annual show of over 400 cars in the Main Street area. This year's attractions include a Ford prototype, live restoration demos, the "Beautiful Brute" Chrysler C-300, and green cars. Main St. between Huron & William. Free. 668-7112, ext. 26. 2-10 p.m.

7th Annual Elvisfest: Ypsilanti Depot Town Association. July 13 & 14. Thousands annually celebrate the memory of the Man from Memphis at this festival highlighted by a performance by Motown superstar Martha Reeves. Also, performances by 12 professional Elvis tribute artists from around the nation and Canada. They are backed by an Elvis tribute band, the Change of Habit Tribute Band. Also, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, and Buddy Holly imitators. Friday is "Blue Hawaiian Nite": dress in Hawaiian attire.
Frog Island, Riverside Park, and Depot Town, Ypsilanti.

Celebrate the 4th in Detroit

Looking for something to do on Wednesday? Check out the 2007 Comerica CityFest in Detroit’s New Center. The celebration starts July 4 and continues through Sunday, July 8th. The events are free and include activities for kids, food from area restaurants and a street market. There will be live performances by Femi Kuti and the Positive Force (son of Fela Kuti), The Wailers, Weird Al Yankovic, The Detroit Cobras and many more. The festival will also host featured artists, rock climbing for kids, Modern Skate and Surf and the Detroit Derby Girls.

Ann Arbor Civic Band March Mania

Were you like me and spent your formative years in various bands? Not the kind with kids with cool haircuts and loud guitars, rather the kind with uncomfortable uniforms and instruments with spit valves. If you can relate then you should check out the Ann Arbor Civic Band as they kick off their summer season with March Mania, June 27th at 8pm in the West Park Band Shell. Concerts will run weekly through July.

If you are eager to get in the marching spirit listen to The World's Greatest Marches, the United States Marine Band, and the Boston Pops Orchestra. And just for giggles, check out the picture book, Olivia Forms a Band.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a time marked with celebrations, picnics and family gatherings.
The Ann Arbor Branch of the NAACP is hosting its 13th Annual Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom. The family-oriented program includes performances by church choirs and other entertainment, a cakewalk, children's activities, and other fun. Food available. All invited. Wheeler Park, N. Goin' to the Green Fair

Downtown Tree Town will be transformed Friday night, June 15th, from 5 to 10 p.m., into the 7th Annual Green Fair. Stroll exhibits on rain barrels, green roofs, green cars, green bikes ... The Leslie Science Center and the Hands-On Museum will provide plenty of activities for kids. Plan a neighborhood lets-walk-to-the-fair group and stop by the Downtown Library to register for the Figure It Out summer reading program.

Join in the Sesquincentennial celebration of the Washtenaw County Historical Society on Saturday, June 16th, 2-4 p.m. at the Museum on Main Street. They’ll be dedicating a 1857 American flag and hosting a garden party so come stroll through the beautiful grounds and take a tour of the Sesquincentennial Exhibit inside the Museum.
