The HomeGrown Festival is this Saturday!

Ann Arbor’s Homegrown Festival is headed to the Kerrytown market on Saturday, September 12, from 5-10pm. The festival’s website boasts, “The HomeGrown Festival celebrates local food and community and seeks to focus broad mainstream attention on the community-wide benefits (and pleasure!) of eating from our own foodshed.”
In addition to the wonderful food vendors who will be there, there will also be a number of other activities to partake in, including tomato tasting, a beer garden, chef demos, kids’ activities, non-profit booths, and live music. Sounds like good times! Admission is free, food is available for purchase.
Ann Arbor has such a wonderful community with great support in local food efforts. (Think Slow Food Huron Valley.) Celebrate wonderful food and wonderful Michigan farms at this event!

Paws in the Park

Attention dog owners and dog lovers: this Saturday and Sunday (8/22 and 8/23) from 9am to 5pm at Heritage Park, in Canton, bring your pup to Paws in the Park, a new event featuring the Purina Incredible Dog Team from America's Got Talent 4, Ultimate Air Dog, Rock n' Roll K9's, and much more. Be sure to check out the entire weekend schedule for more exciting events. This dog owner is especially looking forward to the Best Trick Contest and the Wiener Race, but maybe a bit unsure about the Best Kisser Contest. Can't make it this weekend? Celebrate the AA Farmers Market

A 90th birthday celebration for the venerable Ann Arbor Farmers' Market is Saturday Aug. 8. Stop by for gelato, music, birthday cake, and kids' activities. Huron River Day 2009

Sunday, July 12 is the 2009 Huron River Day! From noon to 4 p.m. at Gallup Park, all are invited to play on the river with discounted canoe and kayak rentals. There will be plenty of food and entertainment, including the WCC Jazz Bands, and many opportunities for all ages to learn about the river's importance and health. Other activities will include Geocaching, a classic boat show, how to plant a rain garden, and live animal presentations.

Great summer walks with Brenda Bentley

Don’t miss meeting Brenda Bentley, author of Riverwalks Ann Arbor when she speaks at the downtown library 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, July 10. Her book is gaining plenty of attention, and she recently spoke to city council against removal of Argo dam, according to the Ann Arbor Chronicle. Her library program is called "Walking For Fun, Exercise And Cultural Edification In The Ann Arbor Area." Books will be on sale, and a signing will follow the presentation.

Photowalk: Capture the Beauty of Ann Arbor

AADL is proud to be hosting our first Photowalk this Saturday! Start by joining us for a panel discussion featuring portrait and festival photographer Myra Klarman, fine arts photographer and Crappy Camera Club cofounder Michael Myers, and Ann Arbor News photojournalist Leisa Thompson at 10 am. Then, stick around as we go out in groups to find the interesting things in Ann Arbor and document them with our cameras. You can come back to the Downtown Library Training Center to edit your photos on our iMacs and upload them to your Flickr account or our pictureAnnArbor collection. Bring your camera and join us!

The Photowalk and Twitter

If I were to utter the word "Twitter", you will most probably quite certain be put off. What with all the barrage of 'twitter', 'tweets', 'tweeps', 'tweetups' and other lingo floating around. I managed to see CBS cover it too. The hype is definitely overkill but there are good stories to come out of this too.
The Photowalk is one such story. A simple 'tweet'(text message) out to my network on Twitter had the message picked up by Eli Neiburger (@ulotrichous) at AADL. After a brief meeting at AADL, the wheels began rolling and today I can't be happier. That is the power of social networking to me. The ability to reach out to somebody I don't know but may have common interests with. This has only increased the appeal of Twitter for me. Whereas in Facebook, I 'friend' people who I've actually met in real life, the case with Twitter is the opposite.
Today the amazing team at AADL has finally made my dream of a photowalk in Ann Arbor a reality. The opportunity to interact with people who enjoy photography is boundless. If you've ever been to Cafe Zola, be sure to check out the work of Myra Klarman from 'Top of the Park' last summer. The brilliant portrait photographer will be present as a panelist at the Photowalk. And so will be Leisa Thompson, whose sports photography features on Mlive.com and Michael C. Myers of the 'legendary' Ann Arbor Crappy Camera Club.

If like me, you are fascinated by wine and attitudes surrounding it, be sure to come hear International Wine Judge Ron Sober discuss wine snobbery and why it's not necessary, on June 18 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the downtown library. Beforehand you may want to read up on wine snobbery, in one of many fine wine books at the library.

Ann Arbor Summer Festival June 12 – July 5

Summer Festival is back! Are you ready? Is Ann Arbor ready? I hope so! This event is a staple or this city and a great way to get into the groove of summer and have some (mostly free) outdoor fun. There’s free music and movies at Top of the Park, comedy acts and live music, special events, and plenty of stuff for the kids. There is too much going to mention everything, so be sure to check out the event’s website for all the important details on events and locations. Even with these cold temps, Summer is on its way!

The Ditty Bops perform at The Ark

Ever genre-defying, The Ditty Bops, will play at The Ark this Friday, June 12 at 8pm. Their quirky, and often interactive, performances tend to be pretty playful and include skits, slideshows, puppet shows, and costumes. The Los Angeles duo’s music has been described as a mixture of blues, western swing, folk, ragtime, bluegrass, and musical theater, with sweet vocal harmonies. For a sampling check out their snappy self titled debut album, as well as Moon Over the Freeway.
