PreK Bits - Quiet under the Quilts

Ms. Rachel's recipe for bedtime storytime ... one tired child, one bed, 5 good books, wrapped in plenty of peace and quiet. So quick as a bunny, brush your teeth, and get into pajamas. Then quiet as a mouse you can listen to favorite stories, and dream:
The Hinky Pink is a re-telling of A BED JUST SO. The story we first knew was by Jeanne Hardendorff. It is no longer in print, but such a favorite of the Librarians, it is still told in Storytime.
Dream Machines has exquisite illustrations of mechanical inventions, to study closely, while someone reads the poems and prose.

PreK Bits - "B" is for Bears

Ms. Rachel found "B" in the letter box today for .... bring back Brown Bears ...
The Three Bears has many versions, but favorite versions include:
The Three Bears by Byron Barton who is known for spare text, and bright, child-like drawings which are especially attractive to youngest children.
Goldilocks And The three Bears for illustrations by Jan Brett.
The Three Bears by Paul Galdone, famous for his classic versions of folk tales.
Goldilocks And The Three Bears, a new "sassy" telling by Emma Chichester Clark.
And "fractured fairy tale" versions by James Marshall or Stu Smith.
Now that we know what bears look like, We're Going On A Bear Hunt.

Rings On Her Fingers and Bells On Her Toes

The last time we had Mother Goose to the library we had a big crowd of happy listeners for tiny tales and rhymes. Trudy Bulkley, a longtime favorite at Ann Arbor’s Kerrytown, will grace us with her gander in tow on Wednesday, March 8th at 10 am in the Downtown Youth Department Story Corner.

PreK Bits - "F" is for Fishy Folktales

Ms. Rachel told fish tales @ Malletts Creek. A "Whale Of a Tale" is an exaggerated oral-tradition tale from Inuit people. It is a story about one very H-U-N-G-R-Y little boy. We went fishing with Kumak's extended family in Kumak's Fish and were surprised by what we caught!
You can find more deep sea stories in the following titles:
Burt Dow Deep Water Man, a tall tale from Maine about the day Burt Dow pulled up the tale of a whale or ... perhaps "'twas 'tother way 'round. The tale of a whale pulled up Burt Dow!" This story is great grade school kids, too!
Swimmy, a tiny fish who figures out a way to swim safely in the great blue sea.
The Fisherman and His Wife who get too greedy with the wishes they are granted.
Baby Beluga has all the words, and you can hear Raffi sing it on CD Baby Beluga.

PreK Bits - LOVIES and Valentines!

Every "Love" has a story. For Valentine's Week we had "Lovey" Stories in Preschool Storytime @ Malletts Creek.
We sang "A You're Adorable" an alphabet love song that can be found on
Great Big Hits by Sharon, Lois and Bram.
Something From Nothing follows reincarnations of Joseph's baby blanket until the final piece becomes lost, and nothing is left .... but the story.
Guess How Much I Love You is the duel between little Nutbrown Hare and big Nutbrown Hare for who loves the other most. This love story can be found in Foreign Language Collections because Love is universal.

PreK Bits - TRUCKERY

The theme was "Wheels" in Ms. Rachel's Preschool Storytime this week:
Tip tip Dig Dig introduces the trucks that make a beautiful adventure play park.
The Line Up Book follows Sam as he creates a line of toys from his room all the way through the house to lunch with mother in the kitchen.
We sang "Wheels On The Bus" from Rise And Shine and "Bumping Up and Down" in my Little Red Wagon from Singable songs For The Very Young.

PreK Bits - Crocodiles

Crocodiles came to Storytime at Malletts Creek Branch this week. Ms. Rachel told Mrs. Chicken And the Hungry Crocodile about how Chicken convinced Crocodile that they are sisters!
A related tale in READER format is Crocodile And Hen.
If you enjoy reading aloud with family find Roald Dahl's The Enormous Crocodile and giggle together through the chapters.
