AADL-GT Round 4 Results: Bros & Co Triumphant!

Ann Arbor, Michigan. A cold, grey, Saturday Afternoon in November. Surely, nothing could be as important to the sports fans of Michigan as watching Round 4 of AADL-GT 2006 Super Smash Double Dash Championship Series Live on TV! Right? Of course. However, this was this other game going on, some football game or something, so turnout at last weekend's tournaments was a bit low. All the big guns were present, though, so in the absence of any distinct power vacuum, this season's regulars mostly skated to victory through diminished ranks of hopefuls. When all was said and done, Bros & Co took their first Clan Battle victory from Turtle Clan over a spirited round of Gauntlet, setting the stage for an intense Clan Cup next month. Remember THE SHEIK?

Many of you are too young to remember him, but for young women in the 1920's, Rudolph Valentino was the first major movie sex symbol. On November 20, 1921, one of his most famous films, The Sheik was released. Valentino's steamy, melodramatic portrayal of a desert prince hopelessly in love with an Englishwoman left women fainting in the aisles. A sequel, The Son of the Shiek, was released in 1926, a few weeks after Valentino's tragic death.

The Library has an extensive collection of silent films featuring such greats as Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and the "It Girl, Clara Bow. Check them out!

DDR, Mario Kart and Super Smash Tournaments: This Weekend!

If you can pry yourself away from your new console -- or get someone to save your spot in line -- come to the Downtown Library this weekend for a series of Videogame Tournaments for all ages! First, we'll have a Dance Dance Revolution Tournament for All Ages, Friday, 11/17, from 6-8:30 PM. We'll have prizes for 1st and 2nd place in the Standard/Heavy Level, as well as a prize for the best Adult / Child Team!

We'll then proceed to the final regular season round of the Super Smash Double Dash Championship Series, Saturday, 11/18, from Noon - 5 PM. This is the last chance for a clan to qualify for the December Clan Cup and Grand Championships, unless you want to take your chances with the wildcards, so bring your best thumbs! Also, this event will be televised live on CTN channel 18, and we all know that all of Ann Arbor will be glued to their Televisions to watch this event this Saturday! Right? Anyone? Be sure to bring a release form if you haven't already.

Finally, we'll have a Kid's Kart TEAM Tournament for Grades 5 and under, Sunday, 11/19, from 1-4 PM, with prizes for the two best teams at the tournament, along with open play. Hope to see you there! Read on for more details.

2006 Teen Arts Festival

Looking for something to do on a Friday night? Go to the first year of the Washtenaw County Teen Arts Festival on November 17th from 5-11 pm at Washtenaw Community College’s Morris Lawrence Building.

Over two hundred pieces of artwork, including visual and digital arts, from high school students in Washtenaw County will be on display, and some will be for sale. Hands-on workshops and seminars with Admissions faculty from the U of M School of Art & Design will go from 5-7 pm. Performances from local artists like Davy and Peter Rothbart, the Ann Arbor National Poetry Slam Team, and other teen performers will take place from 7-11 pm. This FREE event will also include refreshments.

2006 NBA Winner (Young People’s Literature) announced

The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation: Volume 1: The Pox Party by M.T. Anderson has been announced the 2006 National Book Award winner for Young People’s Literature. Set against the disquiet of Revolutionary Boston, this novel, the first of two parts, re-imagines the past as an eerie place that has startling resonance for readers today.

This book is not for every teen reader. In fact, some folks aren’t sure just who this book is written for. However, everyone agrees that the writing is brilliant. Try it and see what you think.

Calling All Cup Stackers!

Maybe you’ve been practicing at school or maybe you are a cup stacking fanatic at home. Either way, come to the library to practice your cup stacking skills and work on besting your greatest time at the 3-6-3 stack.

Meet at the Pittsfield branch on November 22 at 2 PM. We will start with some drills and move on to the tournament, ending by 4 PM. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fastest stackers. This tournament is for ages 8 and older.

Book lover fights crime!

The protagonist of Read or Die isn’t exactly your classic secret agent. Yomiko Readman is a mild-mannered substitute teacher who has a habit of spending every last cent she earns on books. But, as a monster quickly discovers when it tries to steal one of her books (which she hasn’t even finished reading—the horror!), she can put up a pretty good fight with her special skill for using sheets of paper as weapons.

Yomiko’s talent brings her to the attention of the British Library Special Engineering Force, which is investigating a rash of thefts involving rare books. Can Yomiko and her colleagues uncover the mastermind behind the thefts before their sinister plan comes to fruition?
