I Hate Chaos!

Lord of the Night, by Simon Spurrier, is a science fiction novel set in the Warhammer_40000 universe. The story pits the Sahaal, a Chaos Marine of the Night Lords Legion against Mita Ashyn, a member of the Imperial Inquisitors. Sahaal uses the skills he learned from his long dead Primarch Konrad Kurze in his attempt to recover his chapter's missing heirloom on the the remote and sunless hive-world of Equixus. The book is a great read and reinforces my dislike for all things Chaos. Long live the Emperor!

Happy Birthday, Charles and Sinclair

Today, February 7, is the birthday of two novelists also known as social critics, Charles Dickens and Sinclair Lewis, Dickens in 1812 and Lewis in 1885. While Dickens wrote about the deplorable working conditions and poverty of London and environs, Lewis wrote on the inequalities of race and the second class status of women and the powerless in 1930's America. Lewis was the first American novelist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. Check out all the wonderful film adaptations of Dickens' novels that are at the Library. Lewis's novels, Elmer Gantry and Dodsworth are also in our film collection.

AADL-GT Game & Plan Meetup: This Saturday, 1-4 PM

Welcome back to the world of AADL-GT! Some weeks have passed since the tumultuous Grand Championships and the end of the 2006 season; now it's time to look forward and talk about what worked and what didn't going into Season 4. If you want to be a part of this discussion, please join us this Saturday, 2/10, from 1-4 PM at the Pittsfield Branch Library behind the Ice Cube on Oak Valley Drive. We'll have plenty of open play, food, spirited discussions, a preview of the 2006 GC DVD, and your chance to be interviewed for bonus features on the disc. Please note that aged-out players (Seniors) are absolutely welcome at this event; your experienced input is invaluable to us, and we especially want to get interviews with as many graduating players as we can. We hope to see you all there! Read on for some items I'd like to discuss.

Pet & Wildlife Photo Contest - enter starting Monday, Feb. 5!

Beginning Monday, February 5 the Downtown Youth Department will start taking submissions for the "Pet & Wildlife Photo Contest." Students in grades K-12 are eligible for the contest. Here are the details: Limit of 2 entries per person. Each photo must have your name, phone # and either your pet's name or a photo title on the back of the photo and be accompanied by a signed entry form (available at the time of photo drop-off). Photos may be black & white or color, must be no larger than 5x7" and must be glossy prints only. Photos will be judged based on subject, originality and creativity. One winner and one honorable mention will be named in each of 4 categories: Grades K-2; 3-5; 6-8 and 9-12. Entries may be dropped off at the Downtown Youth Department Reference Desk during library hours beginning Monday, February 5 at 10:00 AM through Thursday, March 8 by 9:00 PM. Every photo entered will be displayed in the Downtown Youth Department during the month of March., beginning Friday, March 9. Photos will be returned to participants and can be picked up anytime during the first week of April.

Welcome Slauson Library Songsters!

Sixth graders from Slauson Middle School are coming to the library Wednesday, Jan. 31, and Thursday, Feb. 1, to present the songs, stories, skits and stomps they have created. They all have worked very hard on their performances, with the help of Lee Knight, well known musician and storyteller from Cashiers, NC. The Slauson sixth graders should be proud of their work! Tell us about what you wrote for Songsters guys!!
See Lee Knight perform at the library on January 31 from 7-8:30.

Science Fair Resource Open House

Librarians will be on hand to assist you with our collections, show you resources you didn't know we had, and offer guidance on what's on the web that would be helpful. Dan Ezekiel and Maureen Michael, AAPS Science Teachers, will be on hand to talk about your project and give advice. See you on Monday, Jan. 29 from 6:30-8:30 at the Downtown Library in the Youth Department.

Prize Winning Stories

Prize Winning Stories are available to check out. Short Stories are published in a booklet with the top three winning stories in each of the three grade categories. Last year winning writers came from Community, Rudolf Steiner, and Huron. Middle school contest winners came from Tappan in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Dexter. You might be inspired to contribute a story to this year's contest, or simply read them for the fun of it. We are taking submissions until March 19th, and click here for current contest guidelines
