PreK BITS - “A” is for Art

There were ARTful stories in Preschool Storytime @ Malletts Creek this week.
Ms. Rachel drew “Monkey Face” while telling the story.
The book MONKEY FACE is long out of print but the tale lives on in oral tradition.
Frank Asch is the author and his books are still popular.
The BIG ORANGE SPLOT is a story of Mr. Plumbean and the day a big orange splot lands on his house. What would YOU do?

PreK Bits - "10" in the DEN

Ms. Rachel told stories that counted to 10 in Preschool Storytime.
Banjo Betsy accompanied and sang too!
TEN In The BED was sung using puppet animals in the doll bed. We sang the version by Peter and Ellen Allard on CD SING IT! Vol. 3 and used their unique refrain …
“Please remember to tie a knot in your pajamas. Single beds were only made for one …”.
We sang the “Finger Family” action song.
We met “10 Animals” … an abridged rendition of Sandra Boynton’s 15 ANIMALS board book.

Let the Writing Contests Begin!

All writers in 3rd through 12th grade may now submit their stories to AADL's Short Story Contests! Read on to find out more:

TEENS in Grades 6-12: "It's All Write!" Teen Short Story Contest
Writers may submit a short story Monday, January 25 through Friday, March 4. Judges will choose the top three stories from each category (grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12) to receive cash prizes totaling $1500!
Enter your story now on the contest website! Be sure to check the guidelines for more information.

KIDS in Grades 3-5: "Write On!" Short Story Contest
Writers may submit a short story Monday, January 25 through Friday, February 12. Judges will choose the top three stories from each grade to win awesome prizes! Every writer will receive a certificate.

Peekaboo, I See You!

What's that peeking out from inside the library? It's a bunch of great new seek-and-find picture books! Check out these titles to see what YOU can find!

Fish on a Dish! by Jack Tickle features Pip and Pickle, two adorable, hungry penguins. Follow them deep into the vibrantly-illustrated ocean as they chase a fish. Peek through holes in the page to the other side and lift the flaps to see where they go...but that fish has a trick or two up its sleeve!

Hold This! written by Carolyn Cory Scoppettone and illustrated by Priscilla Alpaugh tells the story of Mika and her dad going for a walk in the park. Mika finds all kinds of amazing things along the way and even builds a fairy house! Frequent visitors of the Nichols Arboretum will appreciate this cheerful story with soft watercolor illustrations.

The Find it Book written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Lisa Sheehan is a fun-filled journey through popular fairy tales! Readers will pore over the thoughtful and humorous illustrations to find each character mentioned. This exciting read also invites an introduction to traditional rhymes, songs, and idioms.

Ms. Rachel did five stories about "Five" in Preschool Storytime and Banjo Betsy accompanied with music and voice.
TUBBY by Leslie Patricelli included a bunch of "fives" ... 5 fingers ... five toes ... five tugboats ....
We counted toes "Singing All The Way Home" ... a version of "This Little Piggy" found on the CD SINGING ALL THE WAY HOME by Liz Buchanan.
“Five Little Snow People” melted away in this counting rhyme.
FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS JUMPING ON The BED by Eileen Christelow ... and you already know what happened to them!
We sang "One Elephant" using all 5 fingers. You can sing along with Sharon, Lois and Bram on the CD GREAT BIG HITS.

ANN ARBOR/ YPSILANTI READS 2016 - Lists for KIDS

COMING SOON to a Library near YOU!
Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads begins in January 2016.

This year's community read is:
The BOOK OF UNKNOWN AMERICANS: A Novel by Christina Henriquez.
The story in a nutshell ... The Rivera family is moving from Mexico to America when their daughter suffers a near-fatal accident.
The Riveras confront cultural barriers, during their daughter's difficult recovery, and her developing relationship with a Panamanian boy.
The story brings out family feelings from different Latin American points of view.

Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Librarians created two reading lists especially for youth readers.
Kids Grades K-8 can read and join family discussions of immigrants and immigration issues.
