Free HIV Testing Tomorrow

June 27th is National HIV Testing Day. Know your status! The HIV/AIDS Resource Center will be providing free HIV testing at Maple Village Pharmacy in Ann Arbor from 12pm to 2pm, Walgreens in Ypsilanti from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, and Harmony House Motel in Ypsilanti from 5pm to 8pm. Locations will offer a limited quantity of incentives for individuals who complete an HIV testing and counseling session. For more information contact Heather Wolf or Leon Golson at 734-572-9355.

Summertime Student Resources

Sometimes when the report card comes home, it becomes clear that there are some areas your child may need to work on over the summer. AADL has pulled together some resources to help on our homework page. If you're helping a someone to strengthen his/her reading skills, you might find the books categorized by AAPS reading level and by Lexile level helpful. Also, Brainfuse remains available during the summer. From 2-11 pm, students can use the service for either specific help, or general skills building in math, English, science and social studies.

GED Test Preparation Class

Ann Arbor Public Schools Adult Education is offering a free GED test preparation class before some big changes in the GED test. Registration and orientation will be held on July 1 from 10:15 am to 12 pm at the Malletts Creek branch library. Class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 pm starting July 3rd. AATA bus tokens are provided for students who need transportation.
The new GED test takes effect January 2014. This means current GED students must pass all of their tests by December 2013. After that, everyone will need to start over again with the new series of tests. The new test will be online only. Adults wanting to earn their GEDs should enroll now, because passing the test demands a substantial time commitment. Starting class this semester gives students time to review materials they already know, and to learn new skills for the test. The Adult Ed program assesses students, provides many opportunities to take classes, offers practice tests and gives students one-on-one attention. For more information call (734) 997-1250.

Circle K Tutoring will be available on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm only. Due to a last minute conflict, no tutors will be available from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Regular weekday tutoring sessions from 4:00 to 8:00 pm will resume on Monday, June 3rd. We apologize for the inconvenience.

We're Talking....

...in English as a Second Language conversation group at three of our locations each week. AADL's partnership with Washtenaw Literacy provides us with trained volunteers to help participants get comfortable speaking English. Groups meet Mondays at the Pittsfield Branch from 1:00-2:30 PM; Wednesday at our Traverwood Branch from 7:00- 8:30 PM. There's also a group that meets at Mallets Creek on Fridays from 1-2:30 PM. Participants do not need to register to take part in these groups and can attend as many as they'd like. Important GED Deadline Coming Soon!

Those hoping to earn their GED high school equivalency certificates need to act fast. Ann Arbor Public Schools Adult Education program wants everyone to know the current GED test expires at the end of this year. Anyone interested in earning a GED this spring or summer should register by Monday, May 13. GED Registration takes place every Monday at Ann Arbor Tech High School from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. No Circle K Homework Help sessions between April 22 and May 8

Due to U of M exams and the break between semesters, there will be a break in sessions for about 2 weeks.
Homework Help will go on temporary hiatus after the Monday, April 22nd session. It will then restart on Wednesday, May 8th and last through Wednesday, June 12th. There will be no session on Monday, May 27th, as the Library will be closed for Memorial Day.
As a reminder, Circle K Homework Help sessions take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 4:00-8:00 pm, and on Sunday afternoons from 3:00-5:00 pm. All sessions are held in the Downtown Youth Story Corner.
AADL also provides access to Brainfuse, an online tutoring service. Live tutors are available from 2:00 -11:00 pm every day!

Free Vision Screening

How is your vision? May is healthy vision month! On Saturday, May 4 from 10 am to 1 pm, drop in for a vision screening for all ages – infants through adults – at no charge. The screening will take place at the Downtown Ann Arbor District Library on the 4th floor. This event is co-sponsored by the Ann Arbor Host Lions Club and the Michigan Eye Bank.
