I never knew there was a class system in America until i moved to Ann Arbor Michigan. This town was populated – dominated might be a better word- by rich, spoiled college students. I can see how Liverpool gave us the Beatles, but I’ll never understand how Ann Arbor gave us Iggy and the Stooges.
-Dee Dee Ramone, Lobotomy: surviving the Ramones. P. 255
Raw Power by Iggy and the Stooges was the last record that Iggy recorded with a connection to the Stooges until 2006. It’s simply the blue print for punk, goth and alternative rock and roll. Classic songs like Search and Destroy, Gimmie Danger, Death Trip and the title track Raw Power explore themes of alienation, not fitting in, flirting with death and of course lust, sex and control. Sonically it’s a heavy garage punk masterwork, with Hi Energy Rock Tunes right next to more mellow but still dark near dirge like tunes. Dee Dee….. to answer your question, how did Ann Arbor produce The Stooges…. By giving them something to react against and this record is the final document in that reaction.
