Protagonist and victims are women, and they all suffer some form of physical/emotional abuse in the hands of men. No wonder Hollywood wants to create its own version; It's an opportunity to insert the shocking and graphic scenes kept out of the Swedish film. The author's intent seems to be to upset and offend the reader into taking up the cause of violence against women, and is quite effective. I had nightmares for some nights after reading this book. The book is a page-turner that's hard to put down, and hard to shake off from your psyche after reading it.
