I decided to pick up this movie because it received very good reviews from some of the critics I follow. However, I was pretty skeptical about it because I've seen several movies dealing with Christianity and homosexuality that treat religious conviction as a sign of mental immaturity or emotional unhealthiness. I've also seen films (mostly during my years in Christian high school) that depict homosexuality as a sign of mental unhealthiness or emotional immaturity. I was prepared for Save Me to be one or the other, but to my surprise it treated both gays and Christians fairly and sympathetically, even lovingly. Almost every character in the film is a person that we care about and sympathize with. There are no bad guys or good guys, just people who are hurt, people who are trying to help themselves and each other, people who struggle to understand what is right and good and true.

The characters and performances in Save Me are excellent (Judith Light is fantastic in her role as the leader of the ministry), but the cinematography is equally wonderful. The movie is filmed in New Mexico and I found myself marveling at the deeply blue sky and oasis-like ranch house in the middle of the desert. If you have ever heard the words "Lord, heal our brokenness" this movie is for you.
