There's something so wrong about this show but at the same time is so right. I feel a mixture of shame and interest whenever it's on. After seeing the first episode I was disgusted by the bad acting, the unattractive vampires, as well as the many irritating qualities of Sookie Stackhouse and I denounced the show. Then I tried to watch a couple more episodes secretly so no one would know I was enjoying it. Now, after months of reflection I can openly admit to being a True Blood fan, but I refuse to ever read the book series. I'm a snob like that.
The idea behind the story is an interesting premise: what would our culture's reaction be if vampires were real and tried to enter mainstream culture? Will the dominant culture embrace or oppress the new citizens? Would people be right to be suspicious of a group whose history and activities are completely undocumented? What is truly horrifying- the nature of men or the threat of the unknown?
