Technically classified as a fantasy this series of books really takes place in an alternate world but set around the same time as the revolutionary war. Muskets and printing presses and beheaded nobility. No magic. It’s very unique. Lloyd Alexander takes a lot of the questions surrounding both the U.S. and French Revolution, questions of when is war alright…is it ever alright…and spins them into this alternate world story. Of course, as always, he does it with a cast of complex, identifiable characters (on all sides o the 'revolution' issue) you care deeply for as only Lloyd Alexander can do.
