Mystic River watch-alike
»
If you liked Mystic River (also based on a book by Dennis Lehane), you'll probably like Ben Affleck's directorial debut as well. Casey Affleck is very good in his role.

I loved that B. Affleck used a lot of non-actors in bit parts. This choice gave the movie an authentic feel.

As you can probably tell from the synopsis, this film will be especially hard for parents to watch.

If you're a horror fan who enjoys atmosphere more than gore (prefer a film like THE OTHERS over SAW, for example), you'll probably like this. This film unfolds slowly, with building tension. Excellent cast who are all good in their roles. The "big twist" is not the most elegant but it also wasn't the worst.

Run, do not walk, and find a copy of this book. Suspenseful, touching, well researched.
Must watch for Anglophiles

A really charming, comforting show. If you like shows like DOCTOR FINLAY or ALL CREATURES, GREAT & SMALL, you'll probably love this too. Excellent cast (Miranda Hart as 'Chummy' steals the show!) Be careful, though -- it's sure to pull at your heartstrings. Best to watch in small doses or with tissues nearby!
Not at all what I was expecting (in a good way)

There's an (unexpected) element that was kept out of any promotional materials and the experience of watching this movie is better for it. (Thank you, creators and marketers.) I was impressed with the story and thought it had a good resolution but some of it felt a little hodgepodge, like the writer/director tried to cram too much cool stuff in. Then again, it *was* cool stuff so I can't complain. Just not always the tidiest movie, especially in the middle. Recommended.

But why why why with the Bruce Willis make-up for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Freaky and more than a little distracting!
