Aging Gracefully

Coming into Our Years is a gathering at Pittsfield Branch on Sept. 8, 7-8:30 pm, where Jeanne Mackey, MSW, will use song and discussion to recognize and celebrate the opportunities of aging for men and women. AADL has a rich collection of books and other materials full of insight about this topic and the many arts related to it. Just do a keyword search of aging at aadl.org for a listing with reviews.

Watcha reading: Robin Agnew discovers 'The crazy School,' by Cornelia Read: Robin Agnew, with "The Crazy School, by Cornelia Read.

If you're searching for a good mystery, Robin Agnew would like to make a couple of suggestions.

Robin is the vice president of the Kerrytown BookFest (which takes place this Sunday, Sept. 7). What's more, she and her husband Jamie own Aunt Agatha's, the peculiar book shop at 213 South Fourth Ave. that specializes in mystery and detective books.

They founded the store in 1992, after Jamie, also a bookworm, spent some time working for Borders, another book store that originated in Ann Arbor. The choice to sell mystery and detective fiction was natural, Robin said. She worked her way through Nancy Drew in elementary school, and in middle school she read every one of Agatha Christie's mystery novels. She's remained a mystery reader ever since.

Robin is usually on the lookout for new authors to share with other book lovers, and this year she's telling people about Cornelia Read, after being impressed with her first novel, A Field of Darkness. She emailed us last week that the book was "terrific," and the writing "beautiful."

Story Jamboree

The first Downtown preschool storytime of the fall will begin on a silly, sleepy note with Go To Sleep Gecko and other tales of grumpy creatures who can’t get any sleep. Join us for stories, songs and other surprises beginning Tuesday, September 9th at 10:00 am and Wednesday, September 10th at 11:00 am at the Downtown Library Youth Department Story Corner!

Get Homework Help with a Live Tutor

The Library is pleased to offer Brainfuse, a new online tutoring service that matches students with a live tutor for personalized homework help. Just log on to chat one-on-one with a tutor in real time for individual help answering homework questions, building skills in specific subject areas, or writing a better research paper. Tutors (including Spanish-speakers) are available from 2-11 p.m. 7 days a week and help is available for all students, from elementary school through high school and beyond. No appointment is necessary.

New Collection: Blu-ray Discs

The Ann Arbor District Library is pleased to announce the establishment of a new collection, Blu-ray movies. Blu-ray Discs are similar to DVDs, but display their content in stunning high-definition resolution, which is up to 5 times as detailed as standard-definition DVDs. A Blu-ray player is required to view Blu-ray discs, however since most Blu-ray players also play standard DVDs, you don’t have to worry about replacing your DVD collection anytime soon. Stop by any AADL location to check them out, or click here to browse the collection and place holds online. The Blu-ray discs are categorized by genres, providing a more rewarding browsing experience.

English as a Second Language Conversation Group

Friday September 5, 2008: 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm -- Malletts Creek Branch: Program Room AB

In partnership with Washtenaw Literacy, AADL is hosting conversation groups in a relaxed, informal setting for adults learning English as a second language. Learn new vocabulary, practice pronunciation, improve your conversation skills and meet new friends. TOEFL preparation is also available. Drop-ins and those of all skill levels are welcome.

ESL conversation groups will meet Fridays, September 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 1:00 -2:30 pm at the Mallet's Creek Branch.
