GT Returns! Game & Plan Meetup and SSBM Regulation Tourney Tuesday!

The off-season. Cold. Lonely. Lugubrious. Will it ever end? Of course it will, and there's no better evidence for this assertion than the upcoming GT Game & Plan Meetup and Super Smash Brothers Regulation Throwdown, Tuesday 2/26 starting at 3 PM at the Malletts Creek Branch. We'll start with a healthy dash of open play to shake out the melee cobwebs before getting into the big questions about the 2008 GT Season. Then, from 6 - 8:30, we'll have a Super Smash Bros. Melee Regulation throwdown for grades 6 and up. Don't miss these events; with the age of Melee drawing to a close, there's a lot to talk about for next season, and perhaps a parting farewell to the game that's enthralled us all for so long. See you tuesday!

Some of the things we need to talk about include which games we should use for next season's SmashKart series; go with the Wii versions, or stick with gamecube? Or some of each? Also, do we need changes to the clan system or scoring? Pools worked out pretty well this past season; are there things about the tournament formats that need tweaking? This is your chance to make your voice heard and influence the course of the AADL-GT for the better. Also, I've got some exciting news to cover about the future of the GT... so don't miss it! Hope to see you all there!

Tried to wifi brawl with swordmaster (he lives in Saline, me in Ann Arbor) and there was like a one-half to one second lag in move input. Lame. My snake still killed his peach before his lil bro's diddy started owning me though...lol.

Also the game is pretty fun but it would be better if Captain Falcon didn't suck so much. >.<

it's enough to mess up combos...which is prolly why combos in brawl are almost nonexistent. Cept for broken Diddy.

Also, has anyone else tried it with the Wiimote and Nunchuk? Once you get used to smashing with the trigger, it's actually really natural. Not that my opinion matters, but I now think that we should leave the option open for the tournaments.

I haven't played as Link yet. I hear you can use a "dark" Link instead of a black tunic. *sigh* I get the feeling every Link player will be using that costume color. I'm sticking with Red Link, as I always have. Though I really want to master ROB. I want to bulk up my skill with him like in the old days when he could pick up a can of soda for me.

i bet i could put to shame all of you and i don't even own the wii. i have however been playing a lot with friends. it's actually not very fun. lack of combos = not fun.

i might go online sometime, guess i'll call riley and okiyama and tell them when i do haha.

so i just played brawl and was having fun with my friends. The final smashes and crazy items and the little get the three things and kill someone i think for the most part are good additions.
When i was playing i was thinking that people are going to try to take all that stuff out of the tourtaments so right now im just going to say keep all items in and stages and make the game more than combos and such but knowing how to play a stage and items.
Sure this adds more fun but i think it gives a pretty good balance over hope for an underdog and good chance for the best to win

hmm here are my thoughts about smashballs

-slower characters start to have a bigger disavantage because the faster characters will get to the smash balls faster obviously (ie. ganondorf, dk, bowser,Dedede would have a ridiculously hard time getting the smash balls in general, now imagine if theyre playing against characters such as pit or metaknight.....)

-characters with projectiles also get a bigger boost since u can get the smashballs by projectiles

-it makes the game all about the smashballs, i can confidently say that the whole match the majority of people would be thinking smashballs the whole time.....waiting until one shows up aka camping until a smashball shows up

-both ppl at 1 stock, one at 200% and one at 0%.....the 0% guy gets a smashball.....and yeah u know the rest lol......i know that would give the underdog hopes......but seriously you know how many ppl would get ticked off by that lol

-and what combos are you speaking of bad driver?

in my opinion, the game is much much more balanced now compared to melee, im not against items.....but smashballs=meh

also i believe certain stages SHOULD be banned, stages that have walls makes pit broken with her side-b being able to infinite someone

yeah i was refering to melee in the combos aspect

i really am not too familar with the game maybe played it 2 or 3 hours

so maybe some stages should be banned but i think it adds a missing fun element with the randomness. There obviously needs to be a balance somewhere. When you say people are just going to camp until little smash ball. That is a point i wanted to make it forces people to leave their camping. You are right that slower characters have a harder time getting it but correct me if i am wrong i believe heavier characters F.S.'s tend to be better

On a lighter note i read the first part of Eli's book today

Um yeah today was a day of FFA's and 1 vs 1's with swordmaster and some other friends. They were my first lag free matches against other people beside's my brother >.> Here's what I think:

- They did a good job in making this game accessible and as balanced as they could make it. I know a few people who sucked in melee but are actually more than decent in brawl. I know a couple who never used adv melee techs but were still decent in melee, that now can own once in a while in brawl. Heck my little sister could put up a fight...just ask swordmaster lol.

- When you turn smash balls on, you can guarantee everyone's just waiting for it to pop up and it's a mad rush for it. I like smashballs when you want to make the scene more lively and they add to the humor ...but they are definitely the noob's godsend in a tourney. I can humbly say I don't like that.

Random character stuff:

- Pit's side-b is a pain.

- Toon Link is scary when you're getting juggled by bair.

- Pika is broken. Pretty sure. Lagless thunder = thunder wall-ing o.O

- Ganon's final smash is massacre if you do it right. haha. It was hard as heck to actually get the smash ball though.

- Olimar's playstyle is boring yet surprisingly effective. 2 words, pikmin spam.

- Last but not least, DDD's chain grab owns so badly. His fsmash is ridiculously strong. Great FFA brawler. He's heavy yet his recovery is too good. Too good I tell youuu!

Overall the game is good. There's enough tricks up each character's sleeve (except captain falcon's ! T.T) that keep the fighting interesting in lack of previous advanced techniques. (Don't get me wrong brawl has it's own adv techs but it's physics make it slower).

ban certain (obvious) stages. (i.e. stages too big, and thus easily camped; moving stages so as to not make certain characters unable to fight; or stages with way too much randomness)

this is because some of these stages just aren't friendly to certain character matchups.

smash balls on is a very bad idea. overpowered. camping = best metagame no matter what. the end.

hahahahaha noooooo all stages on! the game was mad with these stages either learn to play with them or 2 bad 4 you.... if we ban the stages then we have to ban characters like olimar because his picmen are to confusing to me when im fighting him, and fox, falco,and wolfbecause their lazers just bounce you if your on the ground...

if you do decide to ban the stages plz lets just try at least one turny with them all on.

we can make it 3 life 3 min so we can keep the games going fast.

are you talking about laser lock? cause im pretty sure only falcos does that.......and good luck trying to do it in actual play....not to mention with items on......seems like what you just said is a contradiction of your whole all stages should be on idea, because against a wall falco could trap you with his lasers as well

also 3 min wouldnt be enough for 3 stock.....way harder to die in this game, especially if people start camping like mad

let's say that WAS true. now let's go to hyrule temple. it's 4 stock, 8 minute timer. i'm fox. you're bowser.

now, if we were playing by actual rules here, i could shoot ONE laser at you, and then run away for 8 minutes. bowser would never catch fox.

i'm PRETTY sure everyone would agree that icicle mountain is unfair to ganondorf.

same thing applies to brawl. some stages are just plain unfair. you can't ban a character, because no character ensures instant victory.

thats what time if for...and it would be 3 sock 3 min i can agree on banning the GIANT STAGES hyrule and that ness thingy newport city.

but other then that it is "unfair" to every 1

ps: limabean and shin and omega... where do you stand with clans next year? and if your willing to it would be an awsome clan if u 3 and drex and i combined if you have a 6th member u want we could get him/her.

So maybe a stage is unfair to a character you will have to overcome that in your match every round doesn't have to be an equal playing field. Maybe get rid of large stages is a good idea and some of the completley random stages but i think 90% of the stages should be left on.

As for smash balls i say they help people come out of camping because without them they have no reason to uncamp they also give some worse chracters an edge becasue they have good final smashes. Swordsmaster you did make some ligadment points and it might be just too random

Items seem pretty good in this one it doesnt seem like any items need to be banned

the little trifecta or dragoon thing or whatever i say keep that because they come so gradually and one good smash knocks it out of you so picking it up it making you an instant target.

Again have only played the game a little so i dont know it all that well

ONe question to those who have played it a lot which characters do you think are going to be the dominant ones? Or the equalivents of marth,fox and sheik

Marth is probably still up there, his tipper is still pretty devastating (horizontal kills at crazy low percents on heavy chars). Fox/Sheik..eh, nowhere as broken as before obviously, but they're still good. This is just my opinion. Hmm, what else...pika is broken. Thunder has little lag, his dsmash became as devastating as Peach's in melee, still speedy.

Also, Wolf (speedy, combos, surprisingly useful blaster), Lucas (strong aerials/disjointed hitboxes), Toon Link (omg bair juggles, dair finisher with a floaty glitch that makes it hard to punish, sh double arrow for camping, strong as heck fsmash/upsmash), Olimar (pikmin/strong smashes and aerials if you get the right pikmin/disjointed hitboxes) are pretty good candidates. I'm also tempted to say Lucario because he can aerial combo too, add his little ability to do extra damage the more damage he has and he's not to shabby. He's just a lil slow.

Falcon is low-middle/low/bottom teir bleh.

and falco was alright i though especially that final smash
what about pit i think it is the dude with the wings and arrows i thought he was really good

pit is good but definitly not top 3 my top 3 would be zelda, lucas, and Ike

omg Limabean I know exactly what you mean about Lucas's up+b online. Even the tiniest amount of lag literally makes it impossible (exaggeration, but it's hard as heck) to direct it because his up+b turns so sharply and goes slower than ness's. I know, I tried him in some basic brawls, scored lots of kills but all the lame up+b lags got me in negative scoring -.-

i havent been able to play for 8 days. stupid wii. i thought it would only take a week but its still not here. on top of that, i have to figure out what's wrong with my wi-fi connecter too. i probably won't be playing anyone until next week. according to my guide, marth is the best person to play as, considering he got the only 9 rating, followed by diddy and snake with an 8 rating.

olimar is super good, but.... bthrow -> any attack -> edgehog is too good for him -_-

btw, toon link is so ridiculously awesome. rob is okay (broken recovery, fast attacks, can gimp really well) but sometimes he just has problems killing.

and its been proven anyway that aerials get a bigger boost because of the slopes so its like auto sweetspot for zeldas bair and fair

Swordmaster im sry if i dont have the sound effects of brawl on ipod and 2nd off ur just pissed because your wolf's c-stick left into c-stick left into c-stick left doesn't work as well on a slope as it does on flat ground. The rules will be 3-stock 8 minutes on random neutral stages ( Battlefield, Final Destination, Smashville, Yoshi's Island [Brawl], Pokemon Stadium 1, and Lylat Cruise)

well it kinda depends on who you pick. if u do falcons fsmash properly it pwns. i still think that marth is one of the best characters. i should be online sometime next month i found out what was wrong with my wireless usb wi-fi connector by uninstalling and reinstalling it. as i said before my name will be toad. hey eli, when are we going to have another brawl tournament? during the last tournament our wii arrived from the mail at around 6:00, and since then ive been trying to unlock as much as possible. maybe we could do one during spring break if it works out. im predicting that nemos going to be better than drex someday *_*

lol ok. And I played other characters but Samus was my main for the longest time. But after the grands I went back to Dr.Mario. And Samus was nerfed like heck in brawl which is why I dont play her nemore....I hope you know there is a 30% chance that I will be at smash club, On the problem of no ride home.

oo yea swordmaster took the words out of my mouth...in his p.s. question...lol. I got a friend comin too and I doubt he'll wanna sit through the planning meeting.

OK, to answer some questions; there will be open play from 3-6 PM. Those who don't want to talk about next season don't have to. We'll probably start the meeting around 4:30. The tournament will be only be double elimination if time allows, but it will be no-items and neutral stages, all that crap. I have managed to come up with $30, $20 and $10 giftcards to target for prizes.

There will also be a reporter there from the NY Times, who is doing a story about gaming in the library. Give her some good quotes, and you might get your name in the Times! Hope to see you all there!

oh yeah that dr. mario guy is a crack dealer. his cape pwns. i dunno why. anyway i can almost beat boss battles on hard w/ marth but tabuu (aka final boss) is all whatever. dodging his "wing" attack is so effective, considering that in sse it automatically kills you

Speaking of the facebook group of long ago. I edited the recent news:

"Well, since we were just reminded of this old group, I might as well update the news again.
So it's time for the new season! This upcoming Tuesday at 3PM will be your chance to make an influence to the next set of AADL-GT events. I expect many players to be there for at least the Regulation throwdown that will be following at 6:30. I hope to see many of you. Bring ideas of what we could implement into the next tournament. Bring some changes. Or simply bring a vote. Your presence will simply be of help because it shows us who is really willing to make a change in their library.
Remember, Eli is working hard to spread the idea of library gaming. We are his example at how much of a success this campaign really is. The more teenagers who show up will help in his example with how other libraries should follow suit of this new trend.

no you're not good at brawl.

in fact, no one is good at brawl. NO ONE. it hasn't even come out in the US. everything hasn't been "felt out" and discovered. metagames haven't been formed yet. no one.

also, brawl is not a reset for the one millionth time. tech skill is dumbed down to make it a bit more.... "accessible"... but spacing and the often misunderstood concept of "mindgames" is still basically the same across the board. people who were good at melee will have the bigger advantage against people not as good as they were in melee. but they're still bad.

hopefully next season i'll be in a good clan, especially if i improve my tactics over the summer. i was lucky when i got 4th in kart in the first tournament, but next year it will be by intension (i hope)! I might even be able to do Rock Band next season as well, but unfortunately i need to learn the lyrics to most of the songs (boo hiss). I still love the Blitzkreig Bop.
anyway, everyone should be excited about brawl's release (tell me immediately if i'm wrong) i'm just worried that 1) daylight savings time will screw things up, and 2) if they hold back the date AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIN to debug the game or whatever. i haven't written any text for a few days, so... o_- i think that there's three days and about 2 hours left. joy.

Yeah the tournys at gamestop are gonna suck the one at get your game on will be 10x better. and Ive been waiting for brawl for a while but im not desperate enough to get it at 12 am, especially at gamestop (nubfest). The gamestop tourney rules are only starting characters, random characters, random stages, 1 minute round time. While get your game on has every character a huge tv every stage and u can pick wat stage and 3 stock btw. Nice accurate count down time btw john, only 1 day 8 hours and 40 minutes left till brawl.

sorry about my mistake in time... i wuz 1 whole day off! i forgot that it comes out on the first second of sunday... derr. no one probably cares anyway i just want the game in my hands by the end of the month. seriously, what's so exciting about getting it at the first 5 seconds into the day? getting to rub it in everyone's face? That's just really strange... *~*
also i remember at one of the tournaments on Mario Circuit i wuz just about to finish first when TP2 + 5 other players plowed into me. i got 7th. what a heart-warming memory

omg wut noobs brawl is totally diffrent then melee.... idk if ill be bad at it, (i wont) but it isnt just the thrill of the game half the fun is waiting in the line for 10 hours to get your hands around the cold videogame case which you make warm while you hold it close to your heart.

dude brawl is so different than melee its not even funny. If people try and do half the moves they did in melee there gonna suck. And the fact its about 4x slower paced isnt much of a change right?

i forgot all about pit and metaknight, as well as marth but now fox is crap so is marth crap too? i just don't agree with ike that's all. and NO, not rob. toon link sounds like a fun player to play as, but still is probably not the best decision but yeah i'll be at gamestop on ellsworth to play brawl 2nite

all I need is jigglypuff but im lacking the desire to get him. Does anyone else think brawl was a disapointment, I mean remember in melee how you would play all day and Maybe unlock one character. You could get every char in brawl in a day if you really wanted to. and if it took longer to unlock characters if we played online and saw someone with a really hard to get character he'd be some what intimidating. idk i just nintendo screwed up in to many places after delaying it 3 times.

subspace emissary is such a PAIN. especially the maze..dear god...the maze..soo many doors..the horror..also 1st time facing the last boss I got whooped. 2nd and third time too. lol.

I'm just a guy that used to drive out to Ann Arbor to participate in all-ages Mario Kart tournaments. I was never super good at Melee, so I only came out for one all-ages Melee tournament. I find that I'm somewhat better at Brawl though, probably because they improved Yoshi a little bit. I also won the first Retro Octathalon

Additionally I write the gaming version of the Take 5 column for the Lansing Noise.

Yeah, the last level of SSE took waaaaaay too long. But, I got it done, and I almost have everyone unlocked. Just need to get Jiggs and Wolf and then I've got all the characters.
