The 2008 Scott O'Dell Award for historical fiction for children has been awarded to Christopher Paul Curtis for his book Elijah of Buxton. This is the story of the first free child born in Buxton, Ontario, a community of former slaves. The author has Michigan connections and a part of this moving story takes place in Michigan.
Christopher Paul Curtis is a star in the world of children's historical fiction. His The Watsons Go To Birmingham --1963 was named a Newbery Honor book and a Coretta Scott King Award Honor book in 1996. Bud, not Buddy won both the Newbery Award and The Coretta Scott King award in 2000.
