Super Smash and Kart Tournaments: This Weekend!

AADL-GT Pad Logo

The action heats up this weekend, with our first-ever Open Super Smash Bros: Melee tournament, inviting all players ages 13 and up to come and fight against the best SSB:M players in the area for a shot at giftcard prizes: $40 for 1st place, $30 for 2nd, and $20 for 3rd. Doors open Friday night at 6:00 PM in the Downtown Library Multipurpose Room, and the Tournament will start after 6:30. The format will be 2 or 3 stock, 4-player battles, with all items and stages enabled, earning points for wins, with the highest scorers moving on to elimination brackets. Registration is now open.

Then, on Saturday, we've got AADL-GT Round 3, from Noon - 5 PM at the Downtown Library, including Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart Single-player and Team Events. Doors open at 11:30, and Preregistration is open now. Winners of each event advance to the Sur-Prize round,, where they'll play a MYSTERY GAME to determine who will take home the $70, $50, and $30 gift cards.

This round's commentary teams will be:

Melee: Tom & Leinad
Backup: Muffincat, Mouse

Kart: Joe S & Sravan
Backup: Duck, Pickwick the Second

Surprise Round: Tom & Leinad
Backup: Joe S, Sravan, Pickwick, Duck, Muffincat, Mouse, depending on who is still around

Only two commentators at a time. We will have a separate, quiet commentary booth this time, with 8 screens on which to watch the uninterrupted action and comment on it accordingly, with real commentator headsets and everything. It should be a big improvement.

Questions? Let me have 'em!

Submitted by Pickwick the Second on Tue, 10/18/2005 - 12:07am.

Oh, goody; I get the first post! Thanks, Eli!
Not, of course, that I have anything interesting or useful to say; I would like merely to comment briefly on one or two subjects.

It has just come to my attention that I am a candidate for substitute announcer; I am honoured by this distinction, and shall attempt to do my best if called upon, though I must warn you, Your Majesty: as my prestigious and redoubtable co-nominee, the Right Honourable Sir Ducksalot, may, if it be his will, confirm, I tend to speak with less clarity and volume than those[[or that? it's too early for my internal grammar processor to function...]] with which I write. This is not to say that I cannot, or will not, perform the function admirably, especially now that you have notified me well in advance so as to allow for certain (or uncertain) preparations and practice.

I do, however, have one question: Will the competition on Friday be worth points that are applicable toward the greater series of tournaments?

Good Luck to all!

Excellent, Pickwick, I hope you enjoy it. The friday Melee tournament will not count towards your overall score.

I can't register a kart team. I got a DB syntax error.

Why are you posting before 3 AM?

well if the doors open only at 6pm then i might as well come on the late bus so i'll be there around 5:45. yay i get to commentate with joe!

Submitted by Major Tom Coveney on Tue, 10/18/2005 - 6:27am.

Ummm, one thing... Is there any way we can switch the commentary teams so Leinad and I do Kart? Or is this pretty much set in stone? I don't know about Leinad, but I know that I don't know as much about melee as I do about Kart. If that's the only thing I can do, then I can handle melee, it'll just take a few battles for me to get into the swing of it.

And yay for all of the new comentary equipment, especially the headsets. Also, can we make some sort of provision that NOBODY can interrupt the commentators while they are commntating, because that was a real problem last time.

Also, for future consideration, we should switch up the pairings, at least for the two main events. I.E.: Tom & Joe, Sravan & Leinad or vice versa. That would be fun, rather than having one clan for one event.

What the right after I go to bed you guys start posting.

Having rival clans commentate togather is a great idea. It would give the (few) viewers different views.

Well I didn't think I did that great of job as a commentators but I see Galen and Moses didn't get in. I'll have to tell mouse and muffincat that they are commentating.

Wow, the last couple posts all have interesting times. 2:22, 7:11, 7:27 did you guys plan that.

I agree with Tom that I know more about Kart than Melee. On the other hand, I'd love a shot at melee commentating. I'm fine with the sets as they stand now I guess. I think that switching the pairs up is a good idea. But me and Tom work well together, so I'd like to keep that pairing for at least some.

Anyways, I absolutely love that commentary will be quiet and away. That makes me beyond happy :-) :-) :-) :-D :-D !!!! :-D

It seems, as read from the options available on the Registration page, as though the Friday competition is to be based on a single-combatant paradigm. The Saturday event is, of course, to be all four variations. The team sign-up function does not, however, seem to be operational quite yet.

I think Eli put the commentators with Tom and Leinad on Melee and Sravan on MKDD because there is a better chance that those people will be sitting in the commentator booth longer with said event instead of then the other event. Also while you guys don't know everything about the game you certainly know quiet a bit more then most people.

We are doing top 8 clans because frankly it's more fun that way. 4 clans limits it to who can win tournaments.

Well, we were originally planning on going the other way, but we'll talk about it tomorrow at school.

Also, it's too bad that Joe S. can't come, he would've been a good commentator. Bad Driver, it's not really possible to lower your voice any without really, really expensive equipment that the library doesn't have and doesn't have a need to have.

Eli, who are we going to get to replace Joe? My first vote would be for Duck, and my next would be for Galen. Somewhere down the line would be Muffincat, then Mouse. Way down at the bottom, past the lawyers, the lawyers' laywers, would be Black Shark.

And yes, Beebles and I won't be able to make it to the Friday SSBM tournament because of the stupid Pioneer/Huron game that night. Stupid football, what good is it anyways? It's just an excuse for muscular guys to hit eachother over and over again. Hockey is a much better sport.

Team registration is now functioning, indeed. Thanks for finding the bug.

Also, two new features for this weekend:

1) A self-checkin station for pre-registrants to speed your way past the registration line and into the open play before the SSBM tourney. SO PRE-REGISTER!

2) A new display in the gaming room with a continually updated scroll of the current event's leaderboard. No more leaning over geeks' laptops to see who's tops in qualifying.

P.S. As a Huron alumnus (class of '95, thank you very much), I must disagree with the assessment that the "River Rat is a horrible mascot for Huron though"... Know your History!

Well, it's nice that the students actually cared about something that much (that would never happen these days, most of the students would just skip the class where you'd have to vote), so it's nice to see that sometime in the history of the universe, people our age could get together on something other than legalizing marijuana.

And I'm not saying that Pioneer has a better mascot, we don't. We just have a better marching band. Huron's march style is quite laughable. Pioneer Bands pwn Huron bands. To the max.

...

Like DANG.

Also, for a long time now, whenever I click on the "Vaccinated Monks" link in my Player Information thingy on the aadlgt board, it sends me to a page that lists our four members, but the logo is borken. Is there any way to fix that? It's not that important, just one of those little things that will nag you until you implode.

ASTROS WON!!! THEY'RE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER YUSSSSSS!

PS river rats really suck. and i will tell you why.
The Story of Huron High.
Way back when, Pioneer high was named Ann Arbor high. Their mascot was the Pioneers. One day some liberal person in congress decided they needed a second high school. They wanted to then put it in the middle of nowhere, in which only 5 ppl lived at. People made fun of those 5 people who went to Huron by being called "river rats" since they were quite near the huron river. These 5 ppl were not the brightest of all, so they thought the ann arbor high kids were laughing WITH them. These 5 ppl then decided that river rats must be a slang for someone cool, so they made that their mascot. Generations after blindly continued this tradition without thinking that any kind of rat is frowned upon by all. Then Ann Arbor high had to change their name to Pioneer so that it did not sound superior to Huron High even though it already was.

I think Joe just hit the nail right on the head there, so to speak. And even though Saline's marching band may be pretty cool, Pioneer's is still the best in the area (you traitor :-P).

At last, a World Series worth watching. The White Sox haven't been there in God knows how long (though it might be because they don't know how to spell their name), and the Astros have never been. I'm really glad the Yankees didn't make it in. You know why? Because I hate the Yankees. I hate the Yankees almost as much as I hate... Well, I'm not sure, but the point is that I REALLY hate the Yankees.

Also, to answer Pickwick's comment (though I'm not quite sure who it was directed to), my general rule that I use (that I've come up with during the, oh, 2 times that I've commentated), is to mainly focus on the action on the screen, but if you come up with some interesting tidbit, or there is a break in the action, then you can go off on a short tangent, assuming it doesn't take a whole hour for you to complete a thought. (Let's just all pray his commentary is shorter than his comments on here, hmm? :-P)

Once again, I am quite angry that I won't be able to make it tomorrow night, I hope everybody has a lot of fun. Go Duck, Sravan, and anyone else who I like.

Oh, and beat that one guy who's over 18 for me. Show him how real players roll in Super Smash Bros.

Joe I doubt you would know this, but the new high school is being built in the middle of no where. Huron was built for easy access to U of M because, more people from Huron go to U of M they wanted to make them close together. They put Pioneer near the football stadium because, that is the only way Pioneer people go to U of M.

Greetings!
I am not currently in possession of the affiliations associated with membership in a clan, but would like to participate in the team competitions in DoubleDash and Melee this Saturday.
Also worthy of note:
I was referred to the confederation by Pickwick, and it is most highly and urgently (!!) recommended that he be awarded excessive, unparalleled and unprecedented, veritable bushels of points for this most noble and charitable act of service.

Good Morrow!
Thank you, Major Tom! I promise to be among those to beat the specified entrant into the competition.
Regarding pr0's request: It is certainly a distinct possibility that I may be accompanied by the memory card which has the distinct honour of belonging to me; there is one question, however, which perplexes me. For what purpose is this to be done?? I realise it is somewhat late to pose this question, and, should you not be able to reply ere 11:30, I shall, of course, comply with your request.
"Hey Pickwick, I actually like your idea of having coffee fueled all-nighters." Good Heavens!!!!!!!!! Well, I must inform you that my observations of my mental state after performing three of the said all-nighters in one week, almost consecutively, have led me to the belief that it is not a good idea to deliberately perform said function on a school night; I will allow you to form your own judgment on the wisdom of doing so on any other night. In brief, some examples of my experiences with total lack of sleep for an extended period of time: A tendency to fall asleep with hand and head in air, while in the process of actively taking notes; A tendency to view the world, and everything in it, as being slightly unsteady and constantly shifting up and to the right; A tendency to wander, midsentence, in your notes without noticing(to this day, I wonder as to the meaning of 'braccgren', a 'word' taken from my Analysis notes; A tendency toward irritability and overt hostility toward any other being; and a tendency to vot...(or perhaps not, at least on this forum). You must remember, this was my state of being while caffeinated; I shudder to think of the result should I have missed my cup(s) of coffee in the morning. In conclusion, I have been sufficiently alarmed by the result of my experiences with lack of sleep that I have determined on going to sleep before midnight regardless of any task(s) I have not completed (Until, of course, the Robotics Build Season, which, to use a cliched phrase, is 'a whole other story.') So: take my advice and learn from my example! (I hope you weren't being sarcastic, because that would remove the whole point of this portion of my post.)
As to Major Tom's point of concern, rest assured, that I am not nearly so prolix through a verbal medium as I am in writing; I am used to this method of communication, wherein one may edit one's remark until it is perfectly tailored to the occasion for which it is required before submitting it for the inspection of all. Thus, it is my worry that I shall not be verbose enough, rather than the contrary. Your advice is much appreciated.
I have invited an acquaintance of mine, Finklestein, to the competition tomorrow and the one on Saturday; he has posted already, but I wished to acknowledge his existence, the truth of pr0's statement regarding him, and the undeniable merits of his injunction to award me many points. Duck has, I believe, a passing acquaintance with him that may never have involved the exchange of words or introductions.
With that,
Good Luck!
---------Pickwick the Second---------
PS: It is highly likely that I am to pose as a high school student for Halloween, a task which I perform, I am pleased to say, with great skill.

Seems that every1 likes the idea of me dressing up, I guess I will. Look for the Scout Trooper at the gt and maybe the SSBM Tourney.

As for you Duck, I will bring the extra badges. In an earlier post I said:
250 pixels length
179 pixels width

I, for once had found a slight issue for this. It needed to be a bit smaller so I made them:
235 pixels length
168 pixels width

The only problem is that I had already printed them out in the bigger size so I just have to deal with that.

With Cons I am referring to Conventions namely the ones devoted to sci-fi, anime, fantasy and gaming. They have an interesting time schedule with planed activities starting as early as 8am and going as late as 4am or so. Plus with free pop and snacks there basically are really large parties that last a whole weekend.

Oh yes your second question. No I'm not nervous. Even though I haven't practiced much I probably practiced more then most people. Plus I know I can win stuff and have commentated before. But you should do fine at both the competition and the commentating.

if Leach won't let me march, then I'm only supporting the band 99% in protest instead of 100%.

Saline has a seperate marching band from regular band so, 1) They're made up of only people who want to march 2) I could have marched every game since freshman year at Saline (unless I didn't make it until the next year, I'm not sure how auditions work).

Pioneer is located much more close to the university AND stadium. You just dont make sense. I dont like hearing ppl not make sense. And IDGAF if the new school is in the middle of nowhere...their mascot will probably be the highway hobos or frog lovers or something like that since they are near a highway and their schools supposed to house lots of frogs on the roof. Finally, grow a brain stem you ingrate. Don't make ignorant and stupid comments just because you lost.

Goodsir Bad Driver, for what cause are you expressing regret? Methinks it is but a little while since there were seen posts with a much loftier length, spanning all of five and two pages.

To all members of the despicable collective of cross-eyed, pinstriped, soon-to-be defenestrated badgers known as "Noise Machine:" If you bring your drumset next month, I shall take it upon myself personally to divest you of certain equipments necessary for the production of sound (assuming that Eli is not opposed to the use of temporarily, but not permanently, incapacitating force).

Speaking of which, I do believe that Most Honoured Commentator major Tom Coveney promised a reward for the removal of the Noise Machine's drumsticks during the second competition; my clanmate, Dragoon Black, performed the task, but has not received any sort of compensation. I hope that this error may be rendered antiquitous within a brief period of time, now that it has been brought to light.

Speaking of Commentators, I do believe we owe a furlong-deep debt of gratitude to our expert commentators, Major Tom Coveney, Leinad, Duck, Mouse, and Muffincat for their outstanding efforts!

PS: Mr. Peanut Gallery, it does not behoove you to parade your elevated status on the leaderboard as compared to those who have attained fewer competitions this year than the three which exist in your tenure, especially since, of the ten entities above you in the ranks, three have attended only two tourneys.

Why do we ignore monkeyman? Maybe because you're a kid while we're juniors and seniors. Plus you don't commentate or know anyone that is interesting, so we don't pay any attention to you. You're just a wildcard from last year.

I wouldn't mind the noise makers if they had any musically talent at all. As it is I find those Wire ties to make playing drums let only video games extremely difficult when they are used to tie your hands behind your back. Oh and doing that isn't violent at all.

Duck, Monkeyman is #11 overall, his clan won Round 1, and it looks like he came in 1st in match 4 of the Round 1 team race. What place did you come in in that match? Oh yes, dead last. He's also made it to the prize round twice so far this season, once more than you.

You should check the facts before you strut like that to make sure you don't just look ridiculous. =)

I did ok at todays tourney. I think it was better than last time because I think I got 1,000 points. I got sooooooooooo close 2 making the surprize round in SSBM Team. I hate looking at the leaderboard and seeing that huge chunk of orange, and me being the lonely white in the middle of all that orange. Oh well, if I don't make it 2 the surprize round, it will be so easy because I wouldn't have 2 play u guys, yet. 22nd aint all that bad, is it? I clan points look bad because my 2 subs left just because they didn't feel like playing Mario Kart. They did really well in SSBM, though, but it cost us a lot of clan points The Loser and I were trying 2 make up 4. But we failed 2 do that. Those a**holes.

2 Eli:
My Subs for 10/22 tourney Were:
Santa
Ur Mom in a Swimsuit
And be sure to count Santa 4 last time, ok?

lol i love that analogy bad driver. pickwick what about me i was commentating! congrads to pickwick to winning twice in a row. bad driver i got 1st in single mario kart and i won all of my races except that mario circut one with 6 vetrans where i got 5th. darksoul got 2nd in the prize round and 2nd in single melee with all wins except 2(one was the bragging rights round). i won all my melee matches until the semi finals with 8 ppl left cuz of a stupid scissor pokemon(not that i'm complaining). in team melee we did really bad cuz we had to face u guys and it just HAD to be big blue and we got demolished congrads to u guys for getting 3rd but u should have gotten 2nd. actually the clan points should be farely close so i dunno.

black shark if u dont get in at the november tournament then u should be able to qualify for mkdd.

i'm suprised no new clans have joined. maybe cuz they only have one tournament left to qualify.

Thanx Bad Driver, where did u come up with that? Hey Eli, can I please commentate next time, please!? That room is so awesome and I can do better now that its quiet in there and I do better in quiet rooms and I would have an equal view. My commentating was not very good last time because I couldn't get 2 see the TV screen 4 most of the time. Please give me one more chance. If I don't do well next time, I promise that I wont commentate in the Grand Championship, ok? Think about it.

Eli would i ever not check facts before I post I knew very well where Monkeyman stands.

That Team race I wasn't driving because tom instisted he drive the team races. His clan only won because the Trouble monkeys made mistakes about partners. Also I had some of the hardest brackets at the tournament I had two matches in the whole tournament that didn't have multiple strong people stacked agianst me. One of those matches no one but Sravan and myself could play so Sravan won because his boswer shell got me at a unavoidable point (it was either get hit or fall off) so I lost my trump card early on. I finished only 3-4 seconds after him while everyone else finished 20-40 seconds after me. I know that other people had hard times but look TP2 basically received two bys in melee single player. Plus monkeyman only got in from one event while I almost made it twice even with my hard brakets.

soo...who won?

p.s. shut your face monkeyman you probably PRACTICE playing mariokart. i used to just play for w.e. when i got it for christmas last year and was real good at it. my skill never wore off and i never practiced and got 1st in the regular season.
AND
Juniors and seniors are better than you because they can drive. you have no friends that can drive and therefore u suck. Oh and one last thing: u made your name from me and dereks team name u poser get a son.

If the leaderboard is accurate the monkeys won with 4390 points.

Joe you're not a junior or a senior.

Would it be possible to enable a feature that put the logo of your clan in automatically with your posts.

Duck if you were talking about the byes from single player melee on friday you should know that one of them was not a bye, but a 1 v. 1 against Dragoon Black who is a great melee player.

Does anyone play empire earth 2.

Wow, Monkeyman, what's with all the hostility? First off, Tom and I don't think that we're better than everyone else. Second, although you are currently high on the leaderboard, Tom and I have been coming to these tournaments since the first one last year. We've been around longer than and more active than anybody except Joe and John D. We're not the best players there and I won't argue that with you, but we know our stuff, we know these games, we know the people at the tournaments, we know how everything works. So lay off, get a life and stop talking crap about people you don't even know who've never done anything to you.

leinad i was the first person who signed up for aadl-gt ever. i had my dad go and pre register on august 1st at noon in the main library cuz i was in india. yea monkeyman u are a poser just be quiet u have nothing more to say. duck launching the bowsershell was skill i did it at the spiral turn before the finish line on rainbow road and on the straight away before that huge spiral that goes upwards with all the rainbow strips. yea monkeyman i can't belive u practice mario kart i havent practiced since august and i got 1st in the event(it was a little lucky i'll have to admit). leinad and tom might not be as good at these games then everyone cuz well they are for gamecube but they probably know more about it then u do.
