AADL-GT: Ann Arbor District Library Game Tournaments

The 2005 season thunders on, and round 2 fufilled expectations, with intense competition, increased controversy, and a solid 100+ turnout. Registration enhancements helped us get everyone checked in faster, and putting food and a TV outside the room was a big hit, decreasing the congestion and making more room for everyone.

The Mario Kart single-player event kicked off with 83 competitors, and a new split-screen approach, with two races going on at once. Everyone got 3 qualifying races, which unfortunately still took forever, and after a tiebreaker, the top 32 advanced to the quarterfinals. The semifinals got us down to a final 8 person race, with [gtplayer:168] taking First place, [gtplayer:141] taking second, veteran [gtplayer:345] taking third, and Black Shark Clan's [gtplayer:153] taking 4th, all getting a trip to the Surprize round, and to the grand championships in december. Read on for more!

Already way behind schedule, we charged on to the Mario Kart Team Event, with 38 teams competing, each team getting two races and 16 teams advancing to the semis. The finals of this event read like an induction list to the AADL-GT hall of fame (what an idea!), with TP2 and his brother winning the event, Trouble Monkeys taking second, the Inoculated Nuns (of the Vaccinated Monks clan of course) coming in third, and The other side of darkness (jlgelinas and ampshock) taking 4th.

There was plenty of pizza this time, and as we began the 105-player Super Smash Brothers Single-player melee, the infamous Noise Machine had thoroughly worn out their welcome, and were searching for lost or stolen drumsticks. With 2 battles per player, the competition was brutal as players attempted to get into the top 32 places to move on to the quarterfinals. Only winners advanced, and the four finalists were Pickwick the Second, DDR regular Piratey Critter, Skillz dat Killz' Monkeyman, and the Foreign Exchange's Dragoon Black. The mighty Pickwick emerged victorious from this intense battle, proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is not all talk.

The Team Melee tournament, which didn't even start until 4:45, with 47 teams competing in a single-elimination, 2-stock battle. 4 teams advanced to the finals, winning a trip to the Surprize round and the Grand Championships: Melee Masters, Trouble Monkeys 2, The Blitzers, and Nitemare.

Finally, thinking our broadcast had long since ended (although later discovering that CTN had carried it to the end), the mystery game was revealed: Super Monkey Ball 2, with quals in Monkey Target, and the final Prize round in Monkey fight. Both games were an absolute blast, with the four highest targeteers advancing to a Monkey Fight for the ages between Vaccinate Monks Duck and BubblingBeebles, Piratey Critter, and Trouble Monkey Clan's infamous Joe S. Duck put on an impressive display, winning the $70 prize in 3 straight matches, with BubblingBeebles taking second for $50, and Joe S narrowly edging out Piratey Critter for the $30 3rd prize.

Clan play was fast and furious as well, with the Trouble Monkey Clan storming to the top of the leaderboard, but the Vaccinated Monks notched up over 6000 points to claim the Round 2 Clan Victory, and winning a trip to the Clan Cup in December.

Check out the leaderboard for full stats, including new features, like race-by-race stats and a wins table for each player, accessible to all. We've also got a new method to insert your logo, which actually works. Just add gtlogo:CODE in square brackets to your signature, and replace CODE with the code for your clan, which follows below.

Next up is our 13+ SSB-only tournament, Friday, October 21st, at 6:00 PM, and then Round 3 on Saturday, October 22nd, from Noon to 5:00 PM.

Here are the clan codes for clans that have logos so far, they're pretty much what you'd expect:

Trouble Monkeys: TMC
Vaccinated Monks: VMC
Turtle Clan: TC
T-Unit: TC2
Black Shark Clan: BSC

But is Black Shark (Noah) actually African American?

I don't care if u want 2 advertise or not. Go advertise some other clan. I need 2 know a couple things about u "Black Shark"

1. Why did u steal MY name, y not anybody else's?
2. If u r curious about y I picked Black Shark before, y do u use the name then?
3. And I hear that u aren't on the leaderboard, tell me "Black Shark", r u even a player, or some jacka** stealing peoples names and stuff. Hmmmm?

He isn't on the Leader Board under the name Black Shark. He could still be on the leader board under a different name.

I agree with Duck on this. If Black Shark isnt on the leaderboard, I at least I bet he is under a different name. Black Shark, if Noah doesnt want you to use that logo, y not just make your own in Photoshop? And Noah, did you just find that logo? Or did you Photoshop it?

Black Shark that isn't how photoshop works. You could change the color or sprite boundaries, but if you just want to add teeth use paint.

Moishe, he didn't take your name. The system does not let more than one user have the same name. You changed yours, so 'Black Shark' was available. As for the clan logos, it's definitely bad form for Black Shark to use someone else's logo, but I'm not going to spend time preventing it. By the way, guys, the proper tag to get your clan logo is just gtlogo:CODE in square brackets: [ ]. Just put it in your signature on your my account > edit page, and you'll never have to worry about it again.

TP2, you can do anything with photoshop. Penny Arcade is drawn completely in photoshop. Using MS paint to edit an image is like using a screwdriver to do an appendectomy.

Hi everyone
bad driver brought me to the tourney
I'm not that good and don't own gamecube but, Bad driver is training me.

Hey Eli, I think one of the surprise games should be in the sports category. Like maybe NBA Live 2006 or MVP 2005 or NHL 2006. Madden didn't count because it was in the preseason. Please, Eli? Nobody answered my last question.

Let My People Go!

Black Shark Clan

Moishe, thanks for your input, but we already had a sports surprise round, the preseason certainly did count. However, we will have some madden tournaments super bowl week and we'll see how that goes. Sports games just aren't that big a draw, they take forever, and I find them dull and uninspired.

Okay Noah, I will no longer use your logo.
Yeah, You can do just any type of graphic editing with photoshop. Personally I would not use it for creating images. Just for editing, but you can use it to create images if you want.

Dude, someone at school actually told me they saw me playing ssbm on tv and step down after qualifying. Apparently they were channel surfing and heard my name. So yes, people do watch us play on tv! D:

And the fact that people have no trouble coming up with a half dozen or more players to put in the HoF is proof of my point. It should be way more exclusive than that.

Proxility, if anyone is wondering, means wordiness. Here's an example from Romeo and Juliet, when Romeo crashes Juliet's party.

ROMEO What, shall this speech be spoke for our excuse?
Or shall we on without a apology?

BENVOLIO The date is out of such prolixity:
We'll have no Cupid hoodwink'd with a scarf,
Bearing a Tartar's painted bow of lath,
Scaring the ladies like a crow-keeper;
Nor no without-book prologue, faintly spoke
After the prompter, for our entrance:
But let them measure us by what they will;
We'll measure them a measure, and be gone.

monkeyman i think its too late for that and u should have realized J's Coolio wasent that good before hand. btw he won't like u very much after he knows that u wanted to trade him.

eli padouk of the turtle clan was not at the august tournament and tp2 got a sub. he wasent at the september tournament either and tp2 got a sub again. when i click his name it says he has 40 points from round 1 in august. how is this possible if he wasent there? i think we should take away 40 points from the turtle clan. its not like they need it they have over 1500 in recruitment bonuses.

Well If your connecting them right next to each other all you need is a Hub and the adapters that hook up on the Cube's high speed port. You DON'T need any internet service as long as the Cubes are directly linked.

[gtlogo:TMC]

The Nintendo Broadband adapter does not let you play Doubledash online. It's exactly what we use to do lan play at the tournaments. It can connect to the internet through a router, but the game has to support it. There is only 1 game for gamecube that supports internet play, and that's Phantasy Star Online. Only Kirby's Air Ride, 1080 Snowboarding, and Doubledash support LAN play using the broadband adapter.

It is possible to play Mario Kart against people over the internet using an application called Warp Pipe, which you run on a computer on your network, and one on your opponent's network, to create a tunnel over the internet that your gamecube thinks is a LAN. Kip and I tried it once, and even though we both have pretty fast connections, Mario Kart works, but it's too slow to be playable.

Regardless, don't buy a broadband adapter thinking that it gives you access to some mystical internet utopia of Doubledash experts who you can play against whenever you want.

That's what Mario Kart DS is for.

we had an assignment on the word utopia like where u say what yours would be. mine was i schooled everyone in double dash and melee...o wait thats real life!

eli u posted a comment but u didnt reply to my mail :(
[gtlogo:TMC]

Did that utopia include Eli ignoring you?
[gtlogo:VMC]

Sravan, please chill. I'm not ignoring you, I'm just busy. You would probably have more cred if you didn't whine to the whole forum that you sent me an email and didn't get a response for 3 whole business days.

But Double Dash is so much better than Mario Kart DS.

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

Have you played Kart DS, Leinad? I have, and while I agree that Double Dash is better, Kart DS is very, very, very good and, as I mentioned in my PAX report, has the return of some beloved gameplay features, like jumping, spinning shells, and the banana train. Great courses too.

But, then there's this thing.

i thought u would read the blog so i was posting to tell u it. yes double dash is funner then the DS one cuz there are 2 ppl in the karts. melee is better then both combined.

New hall of fame idea: how about if u get over 1000 points in any tournament u are in. this would probably include the prize winners cuz they get a prize round bonus and a event bonus. the people who won prizes last year might not be in cuz there are better ppl this year who are taking the points. i think this is who is in it so far:

me,galen, joe, darksoul, duck, bubbling beebles, doomblaze, earnest da chicken,jlgenilas,tp2,bowser(anti snowman),monkeyman, bad driver, piratey critter,Pickwick the second, jimmy d., and post. mini blin has like 990 so we should include him anyway cuz he's a cool guy.
[gtlogo:TMC]

No on Sravan's HoF idea.

Eli, nope, never played it. I was basing my opinion on the GBA MK, which was pretty bad as far as MK games go. I just assumed that another handheld one wouldn't be much better. I should get MKDS sometime and play it. But regardless, MKDD is one of my top 5 all time favorite games, so it's still better no matter what. (But OoT will always be #1)

And that Arcade Kart looks absolutely amazing. :-)

edit: eli has admin power!

[gtlogo:sdk]

y not leinad u should get 1000 in the next tournament

[gtlogo:TMC]

I agree, Leinad... I bought Super Circuit (GBA Mario Kart) and it stinks. I've barely played it at all. However, remember that the DS's graphics system is more powerful than the N64. Kart DS is true 3D (not mode 7 flat spinning maps like Super Circuit and Mario Kart for SNES), and it looks and plays great. Being able to play against your friends or random players matched to your skill from anywhere where there's wifi will be pretty incredible. Nintendo is even releasing an inexpensive USB Wifi adapter you can plug into your internet PC for quick, easy DS (and presumably revolution) net access if you don't have wireless at home already.

Also, Leinad, I loved OoT too, but I've been playing through it again with my son recently, and I have to say, it hasn't held up well, especially after playing Wind Waker. The control and camera in Wind Waker are so much more refined and effortless, it's really hard to get into OoT again. It makes me think "Why am I playing this when I could be playing Wind Waker?" Other than the obvious fact that you'd probably be done with Wind Waker by the time you finished asking yourself that question... =)

Wind Waker's story was kinda bland for a while until (spoilers) happen. Ive beaten it through. Now im about halfway through my second time. (y'know where hes wearing his pajamas the second time through.) Its not a bad game and all, but ill always like OoT better.
Until I dicovered FF7 though. But, thats another topic.

Oot is a very good game. it is number one on game rankings and in the top 10 on many other sites. i played it and its my favorite zelda game. i played the super circut a few years ago at wal mart and i hated it as well its harder to conrtol your car and staring at a small screen for a long time will ruin ur eyes. darksoul is like the zelda king he is very skilled and beat the game in front of me.

[gtlogo:TMC]

Eli, your points about camear and control are correct, but you have to remember: Wind Waker came out several years and a new system AFTER OoT. For what they had at the time, OoT is practically top of the line.

Simmons: "You? You're surrendering! You don't get anything except humiliation and ridicule!"
Tucker: "We've already got that! What else do you have?"[gtlogo:VMC]

Of course, Tom, OoT was a huge breakthrough and I loved every minute of it. Plus, gold cartridge. I remember very clearly that my wife called around for me while I was at work and found a place that had an available gold cartridge on launch day (there were rumors that only prebooks got the gold cartridge), and it was waiting for me when I got home!

Now, I know that Omid is always trying to convince us that he unlocked the nonexistent Sonic in Melee, but did you know that there is actually, truly, an arwing hidden in the code of OoT?

Two things. One, Omid is wrong (and stubborn). Two: Come on now, you have to use a GameShark to get it. If it was in there normally, I could understand that. But a GameShark just takes some of the coolness away from it.

dont be dissing omid, it was noah who said that. u can use the game shark to get the debug menu in ssbm. in that u can play as master hand and such.

[gtlogo:TMC]

I am not reading all of that... was there anything important that came up? oh yes, I like OoT as well, it's just that the game was not as long as I would like. Majora's mask was was shorter which was depressing, but windwaker is an insult to the legend of zelda series.
By the way, what is the story line to the legend of zelda now, I lost track since they change the plot each game...

How on Earth can you say that Ocarina Of Time was too short! That game took forever to play! Ok, I suppose if you just went through and did the dungeons and all of the necessary sidequests only to beat the game, you could do it in about 24 hours or so of play. But only losers do that. You're not a loser, are you BCL?

Oh, and I wasn't saying that the Turtle Clan 2 Logo was bad, it just fails miserably at trying to be black. Miserably. Yes, I know that we took our logo from Halo, but still, it looks awesome, so shut up.

didn't the ocerina have this chamber where u get past 6 parts, then u have to fight 100 people? how can u say that was short? lets talk about super mario sunshine i really liked that game. The graphics were cool and the game was a little hard at first but then i got the hang of it. I have 119/120 shines and i need 9 blue coins to get the last one. darksoul got all 120 shines though. also it sold a lot of copies i think its in the top 3 for most sold games on gamecube. can you belive melee was 4th place its better then all of the gamecube games. except metroid that was fun but i dont think u can do multiplayer on that.

[gtlogo:TMC]

No, I did not write this it is copied from

http://www.freewebs.com/tobiasxk/wavedashing.html

but this is all just to answer your question pickwick.

"wavedashing

How do you do it?

Wavedashing isn't particularly tricky, but it does take nimble fingers. To wavedash, you'll need to jump and immediately airdodge at a diagonal into the ground. Ideally, you'll want to be able to have the airdodge register before you even see your character leave the ground, so the jump and the airdodge need to be all but simultaneous for most characters. If you do it correctly, your character should slide for a bit in his/her landing position and some white smoke will kick up. If you see your character jump a tiny bit before he/she slides, then it's still a wavedash, but you'll want to learn to airdodge quicker. A good wavedash will give the impression of just the slide... a character standing there and then sliding across the ground, with no jump or airdodge visible..

An easier way to wavedash is to do it directly out of a crouch. If you're already holding the control stick at a diagonal down, then all you have to do is hit X/Y and L/R at almost the exact same time. I recommend this only to see what it looks like, though, because getting in a habit of crouching before every wavedash kinda destroys some of it's speed and usefulness.

**Also note that timing varies for certain characters. Fox's 4-frame jump allows the jump and airdodge to be at damn near the same time, where Bowser's 9-frame jump requires a delay before the airdodge.**

But what is wavedashing, actually?

Wavedashing is a technique that turns an extremely low angled airdodge into a slide on the ground. It's the product of the physics engine of the game. It uses an airdodge into the ground to cut off the jumping animation, and the left over momentum plus low traction causes your character to slide. Accordingly, low traction yields long wavedashes and high traction yields short wavedashes. For this reason, characters like Luigi, the Ice Climbers, and Marth have notable long wavedashes, while Peach and Zelda have short, seemingly useless wavedashes. Traction on the stage also matters. For instance, an oil spill on Flatzone or the UFO on Fourside will give any character a super long wavedash.

Because it's an aspect of the physics, there are two other things that will affect the length of a wavedash. The first is the timing of the airdodge. Delay the airdodge a little bit while you're characters a touch higher off the ground, and the wavedash will be slower and shorter. If you wait until you're coming down from a full jump, then the falling momentum adds to the airdodge and the wavedash gets longer. The second thing that alters the length of a wavedash is the angle of your airdodge. A shallow angle closer to perfect left/right gives you a longer wavedash. If you tilt the control stick in a steep angle below the corner for the 45 degree down-right/down-left angle on the controller, you get a shorter wavedash. You can even airdodge straight down. You won't move at all, but it cuts off your jump quickly. The normal wavedash is right in the 45 degree down-left/down right, but learning to control how long your wavedashes are can be very useful.

Essentially though, all extraneous information aside, wavedashing is moving while standing still. It allows you to perform any possible move or attack, just as though you were standing neutral...only with wavedashing, you can move at the same time.

Okay, so how is this useful?

If you didn't read that last little short paragraph, allow me to reiterate. When you're wavedashing, you can do ANYTHING. It gets rid of the inhibitions that go along with running such as lag at the end of the animation. When you're wavedashing you have every possible attack open to you, and you can also roll, shield, spot dodge, jump, wavedash, crouch, or dash. Wavedashing also lets you move backwards without turning around, allowing for quick dodges and immediate retaliation. But let's look at the uses a touch more in depth...

MOVEMENT: Basic. For some characters, wavedashing can be better as movement than the normal dash. For instance, Luigi and Samus gain a great deal of speed and mobility from wavedashing. Luigi tends to have this as his main form of movement, using it for approaches, moving between combos, evasion, landing from the air, etc. It can also replace crappy rolls such as the ones Samus and Yoshi are cursed with. A backwards wavedash gets you a quick dodge and then you can retaliate, if you're close enough, or wavedash forward immediately and retaliate. Wavedashing also allows quick movement when coming down from the air. You can jump to avoid a projectile such as a super missile, and then place the airdodge to wavedash right before you land, meeting your opponent with a quick pop, or wavedashing back to avoid the followup. You can also wavedash the landings of attacks that finish in the air, such as short-hopped bairs or fairs with Luigi. Because the animation finishes entirely in the air, you can airdodge and wavedash without having to land first. This becomes very useful for linking hits and following up on attacks.

WAVESMASHING: Since you can attack directly out of a wavedash, you have alternatives that you will probably prefer over the standard dash attack in some instances. For instance, pretty much any Luigi player will take the down smash over the dash attack. Ergo, the wavedash + down-smash. Incidentally, certain smashes like that one also gain increased range because of the movement in a wavedash. This "WAVESMASHING", however, also refers to "WAVETILTING" and "WAVENEUTRALA-ING." Since you can do any attack out of a wavedash, you keep quite a few options open.

WAVESHIELDING: When you first learn to WD, you will likely end the dash with the shield up, due to holding the trigger for too long. You will probably want to try and work past this so that it doesn't happen all the time. However, waveshielding will allow you to advance on characters without inhibitions or threat. Moving with the shield up can be dead useful in approaching, and the fact that you can wavedash out of a shield adds some extra goodness as well. Along with shielding during a wavedash also come rolling and spot-dodging, both with their advantages. Wavedashing into spot-dodges can be great to avoid projectiles without sacrificing movement in certain instances. Waveshielding also allows shield-grabs from your wavedashes, too, so you can have some fun with that, as well.

EDGE-HOGGING: If you are hanging onto the edge of the stage, no other character can grab onto it. So if a recovering opponent has used all 3 jumps and is hoping to grab the edge and you're already there...they're screwed. If you wavedash backwards off the edge of the stage, you will automatically hang from the edge. Once you can wavedash consistently, this is a touch safer than jumping or SHing backwards off the edge. If you roll from the edge after edge-hogging, you gain a few frames of invincibility, and the ledge is still considered occupied, so this can help evade certain up+b attacks while still causing them to miss the ledge.

MIND GAMES: This is the main aspect of wavedashing. The speed and mobility that wavedashing allows along with the freedom to do anything grants you the ability to have excellent mind games that utilize wavedashing... However, this is not something that can really be taught. Once you can wavedash consistently, you'll start noticing places where you can use it and as your mind games improve, you should be able to come up with some pretty neat stuff using wavedashing. You can check out pro videos such as ones of Yagi's Luigi for ideas, but I can't guarantee you'll actually see the mind games. Mind games are more in the fight, in the head of the player... Whether in high-level or just regular play without advanced tactics, you still want your opponent to be tricked into a position where you can attack them. Dash forward, and your opponent is probably going to attack, right? you get hit. Dash forward, wavedash back... your opponent attacked before you wavedashed back and now suffers from the lag of their failed attack. So you punish. That's a really simple and generic example, but it gets the point accross. Mind games... Simply put, mind games are the game.

Here's some more assorted information about wavedashing's uses... You can wavedash straight from the ledge by dropping and immediately jumping and airdodging onto the stage. This can get you back onto the stage quickly to meet an approaching opponent. Wavedashing also cancels the things that jumping cancels... For instance, since you can jump out of a shield, you can wavedash out of a shield. This also allows for waveshines, or wavedashing out of the shine, a vital part of various infinites with Fox, whether the waveshine is forward to follow the opponent or downward, just to cut off the shine without leaving you in the air. Stages with platforms also open up some new opportunities with waveadshing, since you can jump up through a platform and then airdodge so you wavedash accross it. This allows for some versatility on stages like Battlefield.

For the most part, though, you'll find use for wavedashing on your own. These things are just outlines of some more general uses. The ways you can use it vary with each character, but pretty much the entire cast can benefit from it regardless of whether their wavedash is as long as Luigi's or as short as Peach's. The best wavedasher in the game is arguable Samus', simply because she can put it to great use. Quite like with penises, the longer isn't always the better. It's more of how you can use it.

With some practice, wavedashing becomes second nature. Most who do it get to the point where they can accomplish it 100% of the time with no problem. Wavedashing is not always necessary to your game, as there are some pros that don't wavedash, however it is very useful. It is also not a glitch, or in any way cheap. It is merely an aspect of the physics in the game, and is referred to in the actual game's debug as "landfall special" (the term used to describe the event of landing during an airdodge, meaning the developers knew you could airdodge into the ground). It's the most versatile of the advanced techniques and can help ANY character's game. It's not necessary, but it sure as hell isn't useless. It's moving while standing still! So experiment with it. I'm sure you'll find some nice ways for it to improve your game."

It really depends on which character you play as, heavy characters cannot wave dash well at all. Sorry about the super post

Good Morrow!
I'd like to report a burglary... no, that's Monty Python. I'd like to report a success on performing my first, second, and third wavedash, as well as a near-success in the region of power-shielding: twice in the period of a minute. I think that's the only barrier the scaling of which remains to be accomplished before my receipt of the Diskun Trophy.
Good Luck!

wavedash isnt a bonus its a skill that the game doesnt know about cuz u do a extremely low angled air dodge and it converts it into a horizontal movement.

Good Morrow!
Quite so; I had merely intended to refer to the power-shielding as being of meritous nature and deserving of a trophy.
Good Luck!!!!!

It is still a postable (?) tread.

Good Morrow!
Indeed, it would seem to be so, for the time being; it is anybody's guess as to the length, in metres, of the time remaining ere it is closed to the general public for the remainder of this age.
Good Day!

PS: By the way, I have garnered myself the Power Shielder bonus over the weekend, yet still have not the Diskun Trophy earned. I have all the bonusii named by BCL in years past as prerequisites, and I know not what else I lack; has anyone else a suggestion?
