Shhh! Librarians at the Movies

Librarians onscreen do more than wear sensible shoes and shush people! Check out It’s a Wonderful Life for Donna Reed as a spinster librarian, then Katharine Hepburn in Desk Set or Parkey Posey in Party Girl for more glamorous types. Whether it’s the quintessential Marian the Librarian in The Music Man or the hostile librarian in Sophie’s Choice, there’s a librarian for everyone. Intrigued? A real-life librarian has put together an entire website devoted to librarians in film.

I just saw Shawshank Redemption again on television and was reminded how great Tim Robbins' character was as the prison's librarian.

Btw, there's a documentary being made about real-life librarians and librarians in the movies. It's called The Hollywood Librarian. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's finished.

I was always disappointed in the line in It's a Wonderful Life that told about how Donna Reed had become a librarian -- it's something like "She never married ... she should be locking up the library just about now."

See, the one follows the other, so: spinster, therefore librarian.

Maybe she should have stocked some books to help with her social life.
Maybe she was just ahead of the "single and loving it" curve.
Or maybe she just needed to take some adventure lessons from Rachel Weisz in The Mummy.
