Eli Goes to PAX, and Lives to Tell the Tale

This past weekend, I attended the Penny Arcade Expo. It was absolutely incredible. There were PC, console, and tabletop game tournaments, panel discussions, an exhibitor room (think E3 lite), concerts, freeplay, prizes, and the OMEGATHON II.

I went to see how truly large game tournaments are run, specifically to get some ideas on how to handle our recent influx of new players, and to do a little of what adults call 'networking'. Also, to play some games. Read on for complete details.

Friday, I arrived in Seattle, checked in, and joined the stream of geeks flowing up the street toward the Meydenbauer Center in downtown Bellevue. The doors were supposed to open to preregistrants at 3:00, and it was about 2:50. There was a line stretching down the street and around the block, past a Dairy Queen that must have thought it died and went to heaven. A guy next to me waiting to cross the street looked at the line and said, "I'm glad I preregistered," thinking it meant he got to skip the line. He figured out soon enough that the line was only for people who had preregistered, and hiked back to the end of the line somewhere around Vancouver.

While waiting for the doors to open, I made my first PAX discovery: the Nintendo DS becomes something truly awesome in a DS-rich environment. There were pictochat rooms going all the time, no matter where you were... in the line, in the theater, at lunch, even during the concerts. Pictochat became a sort of live commentary track for the whole event, with people getting downloadable games together on the fly (Meteos was most common). You could just put your DS into download mode and see 2 or 3 games people were offering for wireless play. I played Meteos, Bomberman DS, Advance Wars, and something in Japanese I later figured out was Puyo Puyo Fever. You could also see many people 'petting' or making baby talk to their newly-acquired Nintendogs.

I registered for the Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart Double Dash tournaments... by writing my name on a piece of paper. It was so quaint and refreshing... given the way we IT geeks do things, I can honestly say it never before occurred to me. However, they have some approaches at PAX that we really can't take at AADL-GT Tournaments, for example, they close registration completely up to an hour before the event begins to give them time to do the data entry. If you miss the registration deadline, that's that. Also, most tournaments are pool-based, single-elimination, reducing greatly the need for the kind of record-keeping we do during a tournament.

For example, for Super Smash Brothers, each of the 24 stations was assigned a 16-person pool. After filling the empty pool spots with standby players, they made brackets for each pool and players played a 1v1, best 2 out of 3, 4-stock, 6-minute time limit match, with items set to low, some banned items, and some banned stages. Only the winner of the pool advanced to the next round. I got eliminated in my first match against a master Ness player. I was DK first, then Link, and both times I had him down to his last life when I lost.

Friday Night's concert, after a showing of the 1989 Fred Savage and Super Mario Bros. 3 Vehicle The Wizard, included The Videogame Pianist, Transformers-obsessed hiphop band Optimus Rhyme, and the The NESkimos. Lovecraftian Rock Band The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets canceled at the last minute.

Saturday morning, the exhibit room opened, and we stumbled in to find a real, genuine, E3-style Nintendo Booth, with 10 DS stations, 4 GBA stations, 6 small gamecube stations and 2 Huge ones. All sorts of unreleased games were playable, including Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess! It was the E3 demo, and while I love the Wind Waker style, the new realistic Zelda look will undoubtedly be less reviled by the legions of 'mature' rabid gamers with poor taste who think that bright colors are only acceptable for children. Regardless, the game is naturally amazing. Also playable were Super Mario Baseball and Super Mario Strikers (Soccer), both of which are an absolute blast and are outstanding additions to the Mario Sports lineup. Advance Wars: Under Fire for Gamecube is cool, 3rd person squad-based cartoony warfare, and looks fun, but very very different from the Advance Wars formula. If you like Advance Wars, Fire Emblem (the game Marth and Roy are from) for Gamecube is on the way; it's fantasy turn-based tactics battles, very in-depth, but a bit dry. Mario Kart DS was playable and is absolutely great, featuring great new tracks and best-of-breed weapons; rotating shells, the banana train, and jumping are all back, and the graphics look great on the DS's top screen. The lower screen shows you a zoomed-in overhead view that you can use to dodge shells! You can play 8-player wireless, and rumors persist that you'll be able to play over the internet via Wifi. One guy even said there would be Halo-style stat tracking and ladders, but I think he just made that up. We'll see.

In contrast to Nintendo's booth, Sony had 4 toys-r-us-style kiosks and a couple of card tables, and Microsoft had two tables and a single big TV. Ubisoft actually had a better XBOX booth than Microsoft, showing off some new combat games, a King Kong game that was fun but with a maddening fixed camera, and appearances by the Fragdolls.

Also exhibiting were NCSoft, best known for City of Heros, and Turbine, whose Dungeons and Dragons Online was a fan favorite, especially with all the tabletop gamers in attendance. The Army was there pushing America's Army, complete with Humvee, and Flying Lab Software was exhibiting their new MMORPG, Pirates of the Burning Sea.

On Saturday, we got to watch Gabe and Tycho make Monday's strip after a 'pitch your game idea' panel with several industry veterans. The best idea to come out of that session was probably "France France Revolution". Saturday was also the Mario Kart Double Dash team tournament. They had the 24 stations broken up into 6 4-station Lans, splitscreen, so they had the capacity for 96 simultaneous players driving 48 carts in 6 races, plus 2 extra pools that went after the first round for a total of 64 teams, 128 players. They had planned to have each pool of 8 teams play a 4-race cup, and the top two places from each pool would advance. However, as we know so well, the game does not keep track of any scores in LAN mode. I talked to Zig21, the head of the console tourney room about it, and was able to help them get a quick paper-based scoring system so they could record the scores of 4 races. It was great to have the opportunity to share our Kart tournament expertise, and help out a truly large event, and I think the event went very well, other than the fact that my randomly-assigned partner (because I didn't bring one) and I got knocked out in the first round. The competition was very intense. I actually did play-by-play on the mic for the finals, a set of 8 races, and last year's winning team, Sparkimus Prime, won again. Prizes for all the tournaments at PAX were different numbers of 'tickets' for the prize booth, Chuck-E-Cheese style, only with cool stuff like PSP accessories, games, toys, t-shirts, etc. I saw a brand-new set of Foster's toys that I REALLY WANTED. Oh well.

Saturday night's concert was absolutely amazing. First, Nintendo, on the ball as ever, had handed out little blue flashlights that project the nintendo logo, so the entire theater was filled with dancing Nintendo logos projected onto the walls by the audience. That was the best money they ever spent. The concert started off with Round 4 of the OMEGATHON. The OMEGATHON is an intense tournament for 32 randomly-selected players through all types of games, including tabletop, PC shooters, doubledash, Katamari Damacy, etc. Each round a few people are eliminated. Round 4 was Karaoke Revolution, which is like DDR, only you sing. In front of 2000 people. It was hilarious. The audience cheered the most for the players who sung the worst, and I can sense a surprize round game here.... just kidding, I wouldn't do that to you. However, I do want to try it at a DDR tournament and see if anyone would be interested in a Karaoke Revolution tournament.

After the OMEGATHON sing-off, Pianist Conney Lin played several beautiful, but dull, arrangements of music from Final Fantasy. Then, taking the stage by storm, came the world's 579th greatest rapper, MC Frontalot, inventor and proponent of Nerdcore hiphop, with his band, and personal hype machine, Gelatinous Cube. Front launched his new album at PAX and performed several new tracks, including 'Click Close' about pop up windows, and 'Got Message #419', about Nigerian email scams. MC Frontalot was simply awesome, high energy and suitably geeky in his short sleeve dress shirt, tie, and thick glasses. Next came a rapper who I don't think I can directly mention in this forum. I'll just say that he's the voice of Hesh from Sealab 2021 and MC PeePants from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. He was great, and led the crowd in a rousing chant of 'Nerd Power'. Also notable was his DJ, who pressed one key on his Mac at the start of each song and stood there while it played. Awesome.

However, the best band and the highlight of the evening was the all-powerful Minibosses, whose straightforward power-guitar arrangements of classic NES music stole the show. They closed with Metroid, which was just incredible. These guys are extremely talented players and they know the repertoire well, picking out lesser-known gems like Goonies II for their treatment.

Sunday began with a 'beat the pros' event, where Soul Calibur II Master Zig21 took challengers from the audience. If they could beat him in a single round, they got a $50 gift card. His main character was Astaroth, but after a few wins, he upped the ante and would beat players with their own best characters. He did get beaten a few times, but I think his final record was something like 28-17, and the whole event was just a blast. They then moved onto Halo 2 Team, and challenger teams could attempt to beat some high-ranking Halo players.

The end of Sunday, and of PAX 2005, was the OMEGATHON final round. The Omega Collection was the prize, a $10,000 collection of essentially every NES game, system, and accessory ever produced. Even the obscure and rare ones. It was kept on display in the exhibit room, locked in two enormous cages. Last year, the final round of the OMEGATHON was pong, and as we filed into the theater for the final match, there was lots of buzz, especially in pictochat, about what the game would be. Tycho and Gabe took the stage and revealed this year's final game.... it was COMBAT, for the Atari 2600, first to 2 wins. The match between omeganaughts Coreside and LeRoy was extremely intense, especially with such an amazing prize on the line. In the first match, the older Coreside showed his roots, skunking LeRoy 15-0. The next match, LeRoy got the hang of it and stormed back to tie 8-8. Then LeRoy won a match, setting the stage for an insane finale. The final match started off with Coreside taking a 6 or 7 point lead, but LeRoy came back with several shots in a row to tie it at 10 just as the scores started blinking, which in the old days, meant that your match was almost over. Finally, with the crowd going crazy, Coreside scored a final hit, and won the match, the OMEGATHON, and the entire Omega Collection. WOW.

So, what did I learn? I learned that there isn't a much better way to do Mario Kart tournaments than what were already doing, other than to have more stations or to turn people away. I also learned that if a videogame tournament smells bad, that just means you're doing it right. I learned that if you use Pictochat on your birthday, your DS announces your birthday to every chatroom you enter. I also learned that only Nintendo appreciates how powerful the hardcore can be. I saw Twilight Princess, a Game Boy Micro, AADL-GT DDR master Aaron S, Adult Kart tournament regular Omokusaki's name on the list, Mountains, Nerf capture-the-flag played across the entire hotel, and cases and cases of BAWLZ overcaffeinated soda (it's nasty). I gave AADL-GT Season 1 Grand Championship DVDs to Gabe and Tycho, Zig21, a team from 1UP magazine, the winners of the PAX doubledash tournament, and a few other random people. It was a total blast, and I'm already looking forward to PAX 2006.

HEY! You found SOMETHING HIDDEN! And here it is: OMEGATHONFTW

Okay folks, something is a little tripped up in the leaderboards right now. I will be looking at it in earnest tomorrow. Rest assured that the points will be calculated correctly and that none of the results have been lost.

-- UPDATE --

Okay, the Clan affiliations for the Championship round needed to be reset and things are looking a little better. If there's any tweaking that still needs to happen, we'll take care of it before the next tourney.

But I liked the new scores can't we keep it that way?

Jump Superstars (only for Nintendo DS) looks like a SSB game with anime characters. The only bad thing is you have to Import it stupid license laws and the high prices associated with them. Look here if interested Jump Superstars. To bad no Inuyasha.

Whats the MLA Cup?

First post on new page!

So would anyone be interested in a podcast of AADL-GT stuff? Anyone at all?

I would like a podcast so I can relive the moments of victory over the trouble monkeys.

Oh yeah can someone please remove the Vaccinated Monk subs off the primaries list. That is everyone but me.

WHAT IS A PODCAST NO 1 IS TELLING ME!

Trouble Monkey Clan
Logo for the AADL-GT Trouble Monkey Clan.

A podcast is an MP3 file that is basically a pre-recorded radio show. The type of things I am thinking of would be a recap of the most recent tournament, round by round, interviews with people (I have a nifty way to make people's voices sound like they're on the telephone :-D). I would also have a strategy section, a preview of things coming up, etc.

It's nothing incredibly special, but I think it would be kind of a cool thing, and it would help people keep up with whats going on in other ways than just the message boards.

...And it's free. Which is always a plus. :-D

ELIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!?!?!?!?!??

I wounder what is taking up all their timw so that they can't respond to anything except the big stuff.

5 bucks says eli avoiding us.

"What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

Jump SuperStar looks awesome, but it is only in Japanese rite now. I would like 2 fight as Goku or Monkey D. Luffy. The leaderboard is still messed up. My clan shouldn't be behind Duck's clan! Duck's clan should have 1330 points. How would they get 1360 points. It still doesn't make any sense. Eli, please speak 2 us! R U still ALIVE!

"Chunks does the Truffle Shuffle"

noah is in love with DBZ its not that good of a show thats y they moved it ot saturdays a while ago. the podcast sounds cool but it wont be nessecary (i spelled that wrong)for the grand champs cuz we get a dvd. im not sure if i want 1 yet. noah is right the leaderboard is messed up we used to have 3850 but we now have 3840! yes where is eli?

Trouble Monkey Clan
Logo for the AADL-GT Trouble Monkey Clan.

Tom while, a Podcast is an interesting idea I don't see why someone would want to listen to someone play a video game. It would be like listening to a movie instead of watching it. The strategy idea is interesting, but overall I think that it just isn't worth it.

Eli at the last tournament not everyone used their name during the melee matches. A player who doesn't have one is at an advantage. I think that there either has to be a rule requiring players to put the name above their head or to just get rid of them and save time.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

If you remembered Sravan Eli said the DVD was going to mainly be highlights of season.

"What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

Duck you might be right, but I thought he said they would have season high lights as part of the grands DVD. Not the grands being part of the season DVD.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

If you noticed they had trouble fitting 4 hours on I don't think they are going to be able to fit 5 hours plus the clan cup and the season highlights. So I pretty sure they are going to cut some of the grand out.

"What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

y would they cut the grands out. maybe they should show a little bit from each tournament including the grands like the final round. i didn't use my name cuz i couldnt find it and the people were impatient. how are they at an advantage u should be able to see someone when they have the cloaking devise if u have good eyes. BTW i dont think there should be a suprise round for the december tournament cuz when u are playing for gift certificates its ok but when u are competing for a prize much more valuable then u dont want to play a game that u dont know. practice makes perfect. also with the clan cup finals we should do a mix of melee and mario kart events.

Trouble Monkey Clan
Logo for the AADL-GT Trouble Monkey Clan.

Can you read Sravan I said SOME of the grand’s out maybe not show the wildcard or some of the qualification round. Oh so you don't want to notice that the OMEGATHON II had 10gs of prizes and that was built around Surprise games to determine who was the best Overall gamer.

"What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

OMG, just fix the leaderboard! My clan is suppose 2 be in 4th place. All of u guys should go 2 the aadlgt site and add up all the players' from each clans' scores. U will all agree with me.

"Chunks does the Truffle Shuffle"

Steven, the podcast wouldn't be listening to people play video games. It would be a recap of the most recent tournament. Something along the lines of "In the first round, such-and-such won three out of the four battles to come in first, while other-person finsished second all four times to end up getting third place" or something like that. You're probably right, it still wouldn't be worth it, but who knows. I might do it anyways.

And yes, everyone should be forced to have a name, or not have one. It's not fair to have half and half.

This sucks. It looks like Michigan is about 2 lose 2 Notre Dame. Speaking of Football, Eli, can u maybe bring cable TV into the MP Room so we can watch the Michigan football games during the tournament?

IIIIIIII'VVVVVVVVVVEEEE
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
BUUUUUUUUUSSSSYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Sorry guys. Here, for your reading enjoyment, is the answer to every single solitary unanswered question asked of me in this thread.

Duck: You know my inclination was always to leave the game as is. I think the conversation ultimately led to that conclusion as well. So, no banned items, no banned stages, items set to medium.

Monkeyman: Mail me your clan logo at axis@aadl.org and I'll add it to the list. A new feature will be coming soon that will make it much easier to insert your clan logo into your posts.

Prince Marth: There's no way we'll have time for 4 stock, 6 minute battles with this kind of turnout. I really like the 2-stock, 3 minute format, I think it's exciting and high stakes, which is what makes for a good tournament. However, I hope to never have to do a 1-stock battle again, that was only because I didn't want to completely ditch the team melee event last month.

Sravan: The October tournament will be very similar, number of matches will depend on turnout, but there will not be a team event unless the turnout is really low, which I am not anticipating. If your recruits won't come to the blog, just have them mention it at the registration desk next month and we'll start adding in recruitment bonuses.

Prince Marth: We have a lot of improvements planned for the next tournament. Your luck is up to you. =)

Black Shark: Hate to string you along, but I'll make a detailed post about commentating, including announcing who the commentator teams will be, soon. It will not be open mic, and few of those who attempted to commentate last month will mkae the cut. Stay tuned.

jlgelinas: Your characteristically well-reasoned response makes some good points, but I think Leinad countered them very well. I would imagine that the stalling problems could be self-correcting. If you see it happening in your match, and you think it's cheap, go do something about it.

Black Shark: There was a mixup at the first tournament, where Omid's dad and Omid were both registered for some events. I got the clan list wrong, but all the even registrations were right, so your score won't change.

Black Shark: On Sunday, 9/4/2005, at 1:31pm, I believe I was at Old Navy with my family and my parents, who were visiting, shopping for clothes for the baby girl we're expecting in October. When we left, a car was driving away, and someone yelled 'Eliiiiiiii' out the window. I think it was Julian Mourad. Blog posts that close for comments won't be deleted, theoretically ever. That's the log part of blog, every post every made is there if you keep going back. The new leaderboard I believe you've all discovered.

Prince Marth: The next all ages DDR tournament is Sunday, 9/25/05, at Malletts Creek at 1:00 PM. We'll also have one downtown at 1:00 PM the Friday after Thanksgiving. We'll also have DDR open play and a tournament during Holiday break.

Sravan: I don't know what character the winner of the PAX SSB tournament used, I didn't stay 'till the end because I wanted to go to the concert. The cup thing actually doesn't help at all, since the game doesn't keep score of course. It does save some time in moving around, but it makes it harder to move on if you're stuck with the same good players for all your matches. So, we'll stick with our system, except that we'll go splitscreen. Depending on turnout, I'd prefer to not do splitscreen for the team event, but if we're running behind, it's an easy change to make.

Prince Marth: most of our tournaments are on MAX2. We will get extreme2 when it comes out, but if it balances the scores as much as extreme did, it won't be well-suited for a tournament.

Black Shark: At the time of your post, you'll see I had just posted three days ago. =) The easiest way to do a link is to just put the url, including the http:// , inside of square brackets, on the same key as your curly backets, above the return key.

Tom: A podcast would be an absolutely incredible idea. If you produce it (and we can help), we can put it on our servers and set up the feed. We may even be able to get it added to the iTunes podcast directory. Monthly would be cool, a recap of each tournament indeed. Awesome idea.

Duck: The only people wearing badges should be Library Employees. Everyone in the room knows who has the authority (yours truly), and that has advantages. POWER TRIP!

Flare: Just because I neglected to post for 3 days does not mean I enjoy watching you argue. It just so happens that I do enjoy watching you argue, but that's not why I hadn't posted.

Duck: Whew, flame off. Flare is a good guy, and if you notice, he is generally pretty considerate in his posts. Also, watch out, I grew up in Kansas. =)

Duck: Hey, that's a good idea. We could do that. I'm just worried that someone might fill it up with overreactive, flame-laden rants. =) Just because I like watching you argue doesn't mean I like watching you pick on each other. Good debates don't include ad hominem attacks.

Duck: I've added Tom to the Vaccinated Monks, but Leinad hasn't visited his GT page yet, which he needs to do before he shows up in the clan database.

Prince Marth: Your account looks okay to me. As for your questions, I think I'm almost caught up.

Black Shark: You get a referral bonus for any new player you bring to a tournament, even if they sub for you. Wednesday Evening, at 6:43 PM, I believe my family was at dinner with my wife's mother and sisters, and our 6-month old niece.

Tom: Last night, at 10:44 PM, I had just returned from Mount Pleasant, where Erin and I had given a workshop at the Chippewa River District Library, on Videogames as a Service, and how they might replicate AADL-GT at their libraries. When we do these presentations, (we've done them in Chicago, and we're going to Houston in April), we show part of the Grand Championship DVD, and we take all the equipment and make the librarians play DDR and have a real Mario Kart tournament with my crappy old schwag prizes. MLA is the Michigan Library Association, who sponsored the workshop.

Duck: It's just, you know, the rest of our jobs that's taking up all our time. You lose your five bucks. =)

Black Shark: You're right, the clan scores are still a little off. Eric will check it out.

Sravan: This morning at 8:47 AM, I was in bed, asleep.

TP2: You're right, some people weren't using their name, it was mostly people who didn't get registered before we copied the memory cards so their names weren't on the list. Because we were so rushed and not live anyway, I told them to not worry about it. Hopefully it won't be a problem next round.

Sravan: You can count on the final, prize winning match being a surprise game, maybe even a different game than the semifinal rounds.

Duck: We'll only have that problem if we trying to fit it on only 1 disc. =)

Black Shark: I'm not interested in offering the TV broadcast of the UM game during the tournament, but if Eric is there, you can be sure he'll have a live score window open on his Mac.

Okay, I think that's got it. Any other questions? More to come....

wow eli that was very impressive. last year in december we had the 4 races to gather points and get into the top 16, will those be suprise games too ro will they be mario kart and melee cuz i really think they should be mario kart and melee. if we do it that way then it will be like the other tournaments where u play mario kart and melee first then the best ppl of those play a suprise game.

we are still going to be using the space behind the big screen and the other room where the commentators and people who arent playing stay right? eli we should get actual songs to play at the tournament(sensored of course). like we can play sandstorm and other techno songs or we can play the songs on the top of the charts. if we do that dont u have to mention them in the credits for copyright reasons. so the DDR tournament on the 25th will not have the gamecubes?

if i am going to use pr0 i might as well change my axis name to it as well.

Hi Eli. I've registered now so you may make me a Vaccinated Monk.

Everything sounds good. We'll set up our fourth Monk as well.

"There is no spoon." -Neo

Hi, I'm the 4th Vaccinated Monk. Add me and Leinad to the clan, and set the other two to subs. Thanks a bunch :-)

Yay! Eli's not dead!!
Ok, I can start planning the first podcast.

Sravan, the podcasts will be put up here (I'm assuming), and you can download them. I bet if I ask reealy nicely, I'll bet I can convince Eli to put them all on a CD and mass-produce them for distribution at the end of the season.

Sorry Eli, I was the "popular demand" that warranted Duck's flame of Flare, which he has admitted, was one of his lesser flames (but I still think it was pretty good).

That's all for now.

Oh, Eli, what exactly should I do to start making the podcast?

Eli, say someone wanted 2 bring their boombox 2 play some music during the tournament, could he/she?

yea eli can me and noah bring a boombox in? we promise we wont be like the noise makers. whats the 4th vaccinated monk's real name?

The entire Vaccinated Monk clan is together at bubblnigbeebles house right now along with some other people, and they have told me to post that we unanimously disagree with Black Shark's boombox idea. Allow me to reiterate that these are the opinions of Leinad, Tom, Duck and beebles.

i think eli made the 2000th comment

Bring a boombox? No way. Sorry. If that was the crux of your plan to neutralize the Noise Machine Clan, it's back to the drawing board for you.

As for the podcast, Tom, you should start by writing it. You don't need to write every word, you could start with something like 'Opening: Tom welcomes listeners, introduces Daniel, Tom and Daniel discuss the melee no banning decision, etc...'

You should plan who you want to interview, what music you want to play between segments, etc. I would highly recommend inviting Leinad to join you as your co-host; I think you'll find its a lot less work if you can essentially record a lightly pre-directed conversation. You guys ever see Pardon the Interruption? I would be happy to give an interview for each episode of the show if you'd like, to give it that 'official podcast of the AADL-GT tournament season' label.

If this takes off it could be very, very cool. Think about what might be in your podcast, email me about it, and we'll take it from there.

By the way, welcome, bubblingbeebles. That is a completely awesome handle.

Sorry, Sravan, it was you again. However, you've ONLY posted 567 of those 2000 comments, so you've dropped below 30%. Your restraint is admirable. =)

lol

Sravan, u need 2 post more. I dare ya 2 post at least one within each hour(except bed times of course), if u have plans, then post it, and u can cancel my dare, come on Sravan, do it, and then do the truffle shuffle.

Here is a quiz about me, your average Black Shark. It is a quiz that certain people(pr0, c0n) can't answer.

Quiz #1
How big is my TV(the one I practice MKDD and SSBM on).
A.32"
B.72"
C.46"
D.55"

#2
I have a Vending Machine.
A.True
B.False

Give me your answers, and then do the truffle shuffle.

Hey guys, check this out:

You can click the PAX thumbnail on the right to skip right to PAX segment. You can see me in the video, talking to Gabe and Tycho with DVDs in hand. That's right, I'm an insider.

i didnt see u

I saw him, it was like, rite at the beginning. How could u not see that bushy hair and goatee. OMG. I realized the beginning music of the video, it was from megaman. I'm surprised they didn't have DBZ as one their events, o well. can u try 2 get PAX into Ann Arbor, Michigan, that would be so great.

He's like 26 seconds in for half a second on the right.

Oh yeah black shark you do relize that the Vaccinated Monk clan was completely composed of subs so that "key player" overview doesn't really give you any clue if I'm the best in my clan.

Eli for Figwit and only Figwit can you just give us the points for her she just moved to Cal. so she can't really show-up for the next tournament.

"Why am I sticky and naked, did I miss something fun?"-Fry

noah that is impossible to get a PAX like event here. yes i did see him thanks to duck and no thanks to noah.

eli what do u think about changing the single melee scores to
1st-100
2nd-70
3rd-40
4th-10
if we change it to this then there will be a lot more ties.
Whoa i was reading one of the bungie fourms and some guy named snowman used the same quote as duck. gentlemen u cant fight here this is a war room.

Duck it's just like a football game. Only 1/3 of the time is actually playing. Take out the wild card and the ads and you'll have a dvd that is about one and a half hours long. I know this from experience.

By the way does anyone know the html for creating a download.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

pr0 - you said that the change will make more ties. how is that a good thing?

"Duck it's just like a football game. Only 1/3 of the time is actually playing. Take out the wild card and the ads and you'll have a dvd that is about one and a half hours long. I know this from experience."

Okay, because, you know, it's really fair to cut out the wild card tournament to those who competed in it. Just because they didn't compete in the whole tournament process doesn't mean they shouldn't get airtime too. And yes, Sravan, more ties would be a bad thing to have.

Yay for Eli for getting into the PAX video, that's amazing. :-D

"Caboose: Look what I found!

um, TP2 do you mean you want people do download something from your site?

just point the link to the location of the file, though you'll have to give people access to that location, so this is not a good thing to do to your personal computer (sorry i meant you Mac). AS for the actual syntax i can show you sometime later.......

TP2 nosotros necesitamos hablar en español
1 stones is equal to 224 ounces
how many pico bytes are in an exabyte?

what is the abreviation for nano?

and by the way: for those who say you can use the enlish system better then metric cough, tp2, cough
furlong = 10 chains = 220 yards = 660 feet = 201.168 m

1 chain = 4 poles = 22 yards = 66 feet = 20.1168 m

1 rod, pole or perch = 5½ yards = 16½ feet = 5.0292 m

1 league = 3 miles = 5280 yards = 15840 feet = 4.828 032 km

did you have these conversions memorized tp2 no?
how about these

and of course stones!

by the way, i think that the scoring system is fine, too many ties are a pain, so leave the scoring system as is

Ah, OK. Yeah, we're working on a logo. We had an idea last night, and it was a really good one, but we couldn't quite pull it off with the equipment we had.

By the way, Sravan, would you want to be one of the first interviewees for the podcast?

And Beebles' name shall remain masked in confusion until such time as he sees fit to reveal it to you.

"Caboose: Look what I found!
Donut: Hey, I found it!!
Caboose: Look what I took credit for finding!"

sure i will be one of the interviewees for the podcast. the old one was 100,60,30,10 and i heard many people complaining that their 2 2nd places didnt beat or tie with 1 1st and 1 3rd. the best way to decide the scoring system is for someone to give an estimate of how many people we will be expecting at the tournament eli? BTW i didnt see the ad in quality 16 yet. o yea last time i heard 25% of the people didnt bring their release forms so it wasent televised. hasent everyone on the blog won a prize of something in all of axis(noah got 3rd in a madden tournament and i got 2nd last year in august against joe and tom) i remember that tom was in 1st place on the home strech in baby park and a master shell hits him and he drops to 3rd meanwhile i am behind joe when i get a mushroom and i boost right beside him and we are pushing eachother but he was closer the the finish line.

Yes, I remember that too.

It made me cry on the inside.

"Caboose: Look what I found!
Donut: Hey, I found it!!
Caboose: Look what I took credit for finding!"

I sorry how can you say it's like football? A football game is designed to be 1 hour of play yet runs for 3 hours while our system is designed for about 4 hours 20 mins of play and runs 6 hours. Football games have 300% inflation while our tournament only has about 140% inflation.

I'm pretty sure the reason it wasn't televised was because they hadn't set-up it up with CTN to broadcast it.

"You may need to metaphorically make a deal with the devil. By 'devil' I mean robot devil and by 'metaphorically' I mean get your coat."

ouch i just stepped on a tack. how do u do captions for ur links like when u put ur mouse over it a thing will pop up saying something about it like in eli's PAX post it says reference on kareokee DDR thing.

Do we need new release forms this year if we turned one in last year?

"There is no spoon." -Neo

No if you were in the Grands last year you do not need a new one.

"What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

When I said it was like football I didn't mean that the only difference between the grands and the superbowl is that Eli doesn't wear stripes. What I meant is that a lot of the grands can be cut.

By the way Tom I fully support cutting the wild card out of the DVD. It took too long plus I personally haven't met any wild cards who watched the wild card portion. The wild card portion doesn't have any helpful strategy tid bits.

I think you are biased on this issue Tom. I'm sure you can figure out why.

BCL don't discuss the web site on the blog. Just so TC members know it will be online soon. I only have one download so far however, by the end of today I should have the second.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

Yes, Steven, I know that you support cutting the wildcard tournament portion of the DVD. Just because Your Highness wants shorter coverage of the tournament doesn't mean it should be cut from the DVD. I'm not just saying that because I want to hear myself commentate; I, unlike some people on this message board, do not have my ego wrapped up in something as trivial as that, and I am insulted that you think so. If I wanted to hear myself talk, I could just watch the finals round after I got knocked out, I commentated then, too. (I even commentated on the final match, when Duck took a dive because he wanted the DS more than the iPod.)
Furthermore, if you were to listen, the Wild Card tournament is where Daniel and I commented about the various strategies that the wildcard competitors should have been using. Obviously, this contained no informational value to you whatsoever. The only problem in this case is that I could give a rip whether you think it's informational or not. It may not be to you, but then again, you're the one who came in here and knocked Smolarski off of his pedestal (an act for which I am still greatful to you for, don't get me wrong).

This may seem really evil and nasty, but it's not really directed towards you as a person. I'm still angry about other people's posts in other places, so don't take any of this as an insult. That being said, do take it at face value. I mean everything I say, just not necessarily the way I say it.

"Caboose: Look what I found!
Donut: Hey, I found it!!
Caboose: Look what I took credit for finding!"

Eli Basically said that It would be 2 DVD set. And I didn't say "season highlights w/ a little grands" I said they were going to cut some of the grands out. It just might happen that the wildcard and season highlights are on one DVD while the Grands and clan cup on the other but does it really matter we have no say in how the DVD is made because they have to work on it and figure out what works and what doesn't work. It more of a technical thing then a opinion thing.

"What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

Well, I will be happy to answer questions about a possible DVD especially here in a thread that at least has something to do with AADL-GT. Please make an effort to stay on topic, guys. I know we're in the habit of simply continuing the conversation in whatever unfortunate post happens to be at the top of the axis blog, but that's not really how it's supposed to work. We kind of crapped all over that Katrina thread, and I don't want that to happen again. *exit scold mode*

Frankly, I think this 'what is eli going to cut from the season 2 DVD' discussion is premature and irrelevant, since you guys know I'm going to put whatever I want on there. I think the wildcard tournament is one of the best parts of the season 1 DVD, and it has a lot of entertainment value. The season highlights probably won't be very long at all, we'll see as the season goes on how many highlights we have. I am not going to cut something good from the DVD to save space. It can be a multi-DVD set, whatever. Duck is right that it's a primarily technical decision. We will make the best DVD we can with the footage we have. Let's not resort to fisticuffs about it.

Duck is also right about the release forms. It's a one-time thing. If you've ever given us one at a tournament, you don't need to worry about it again.

TP2, is this talk of downloads referring to your clan logo? If so, don't worry about it, Eric is working on a super easy way to insert your clan logo that you should be able to put in your signature so you don't even have to think about it. So stay tuned for that.

Also, Sravan, I'm not sure how many people we'll have this month, but I think it's likely that we won't have as many as we did in August, now that school and sports and such have started. The event not being televised had nothing to do with release forms, it was simply a technical mishap on CTN's end. They don't have staff there on the weekends, and someone forgot to program the transmitter to switch to our feed.

However, I'm interested in your scoring proposal, Sravan, so I will pose this question for debate:

If one player finishes 2nd twice in Melee, and another player finished 1st and then 3rd, who should have more points? Or should they be tied?
