Glorious gardens

by Maxine

To inspire you as you dig in the dirt, here are two new garden books. 1001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die is a grand tour of some of the most elegant and interesting gardens in the world including ones everyone knows like Central Park but more exotic ones as well like the Bagh-e-Eram in Iran or the Brook Cottage Garden in England. Seventy photographers, hoticulturalists and writers assembled this volume and it's a beauty.

A new trend in gardening that also has a positive enviromental impact is the rain garden.
Rain Gardens:Bringing Water to Life in the Designed Landscape by Nigel Dunnett, et al will tell you all you need to know to start your own.. Rain gardening emphasizes the reuse of water by using techniques like bioretention ponds, green roofs and permeable paving. (See our Malletts Creek branch and its green roof which should be blooming as we speak). The authors give clear explanations, have included line drawings and color photos and have listed suitable plants.
