AADL-GT Round 1 Results

The AADL-GT season opener this past weekend was simply insane. With over 100 people in attendance, things were fast, furious, and, thanks to the debut of Clan Noise Machine, a little overwhelming.

After everyone finally got checked in, we began the Single-player Mario Kart event with 84 players. Everyone only got two races, so we had a tie for 14th place between Black Shark, Ice, Omid, and John Durski. With a thrilling finish on baby park, Ice edged out John Durski for 3rd place and a trip to the semifinals. After resolving a scoring snafu, Ice wound up winning the event, with Earnist da Chicken taking 2nd, and season 1 veterans Doomblaze (Arjan Arora) and pr0 (Sravan Rengarajan) taking 3rd and 4th, securing their spots in the surprize round.

We were then almost a full two hours behind schedule, and we had to rush to catch up. First, a single-elimination Team Mario Kart Race event, with 33 teams producing 4 winners: Korm (Aaron and Ion), Monkeys of Doom (Doomblaze and Monkeyman), Evil Sunflower (Super Sunflower and Evil Bus Driver), and T Team (The Savage Brothers).

Then, on to the Super Smash Brothers: Melee Single-PlayerEvent, with a whopping 91 players. Everyone got two battles, and after eliminating down to 40, then down to 16, we had 4 final battles, each sending a player to the prize round. To save time, these 4 didn't face off directly, so each gets the full point bonus for winning an event.

Ion, Nick11, and Balla were defeated by Turtleperson2,
Flare, PaulK, and J's Coolio were defeated by pr0 (Sravan),
DrewE, Gnato, and Doomblaze were defeated by newcomer Post,
and Lightning, Zyke, and MiniKinLin were defeated by Corey Atwater.

With the seconds ticking down, we proceeded to the Super Smash Brothers Team event, with 40 teams facing a brutal, 1-stock, single-elimination slugfest. After eliminating down to 10 teams, the event produced 5 winning teams for the surprize round: Team Ramrod (Post and Jimmy), Melee Masters (Turtleperson 2 and AntiSnowman), Trouble Monkeys 2 (Sravan and Galen), Toasted Kittens (bbqkitten and Flare), and FlipForever (Gnato and Chris R).

Then, at 4:50, we were on to the Sur-Prize round. Round 1's Surprise game was Bomberman Generation. We had 20 players qualified for the prize round, and 5 preliminary battles:

AntiSnowman defeated Corey, Gnato, and Flare,
Jimmy defeated Monkeyman, Post, and pr0,
TurtlePerson2 defeated ChrisR, bbqkitten, and Ice,
c0n (galen) defeated Bad Driver, Evil Bus Driver, and Ion,
and Earnist da Chicken defeated Super Sunflower, DoomBlaze, and Aaron.

We then did a bit of a round-robin to eliminate 1 player before the final prize round, and after a truly intense series, Season 1 Grand Champion TurtlePerson2 was eliminated. The final prize round was very close, with veteran Galen Gong taking home his first $70 giftcard, and newcomers Earnist da Chicken taking the $50 second prize, AntiSnowman (Bryan Li), taking third for $30, and James Detlefs taking home the lousy aadl.org t-shirt.

What remains to be determined is what clan scored the most points. We can calculate that as you tell us who your clan was represented by on saturday. Future tourneys, this won't be a problem. So, click comment below and let me know the up to 4 players present at last week's tourney who were playing for your clan, and we'll post the clan and individual leaderboards soon.

We've also got a lot of ideas to streamline future tournaments if we get such a large turnout again. We're going to move video production, commentary booth, food, and registration outside the room and provide a TV to watch the tournament. We may very well limit registration to a certain number of preregisters and a certain number of walkins, stay tuned for details. We will also go split-screen on Mario Kart so that 16 players can play at one (2 separate races). Of course, we'll also order more Pizza. What are your ideas?

Super Sunflower (Muffincat), Evil Bus Driver (Mike B.), Figwig (Maria R.), and I (Duck) made up the Vaccinated monks. Everyone was new to the tournaments (except me of course).

the pr0(me), c0N(galen), joe s. ,and bbqkitten(rod) were in our clan. its good that we are going to limit the number of players that can join. since we didnt finish doing the final round for both melee events does it mean that we each get 400 points for our clan?

u guys think we should do that mario kart and melee grand master thing that leinad said a couple monthes back? so like when a commentator says ur name they will be like grandmaster tp2 or grandmaster muffincat etc. it just makes me feel more confident...

first off I'm fine with splitscreens for the qualifaction rounds but, not for elimination. Also if noisemakers want to be the most hated clan let them do it but no more cymbals. Also Eli it smelled really bad do you think you could get a fan going. Also I had some ideas for the overcrowding problem. Finish up the season and for season 3 have melee Mariokart be seprate events and then add a new event such as 1080 snowborading. And have three seprate tourtaments and in December have a triatholon and play all three single player events and have a scoreborad througout the tourtament so you have to be good at all three events to win no sup-prize. Also the trouble monkeys haven't won for sure yet. And finally Turtle Clan 2 had 2 subs uber ninja and I can't play( Jon C. and Dan Quinn) Any thoughts

bad driver we are gonna have to add another hour to the tournament to have that. also u shouldnt get ahead of urself cuz there is still a couple of monthes till its over. dont worry bad driver we totally won with galens 1000 points and my 900 points in the event bonuses we totally pwned u guys.

For all you at Band Camp, Here is The recap of what has happened. It might not be everything but I did my best with this lazy attitude.

1. Debate about 1v1 and 4person free for all. 1v1 won but we played 4 person free for all at tournament.
2. I said "kle eee paa ... doink." to sravan
3. Eli opened registration for round 1.
4. We meet EJK or Eric J. Klooster Component Developer and he fixed registration errors.
5. Eli allows clans to compete if they don't have 4 members at each tournament <em> (You still need 4 people as primaries) </em>. So it gives points to people that can't get subs instead of not allowing that clan to compete as a clan.
6. There is no 6.
7.100 people show up to the tournament. Pizza gone in 5 min.s(whimper)
8. Noisemakers keep banging on a symbol at the tournament.
9. Discussion on how to make the tournament less random and faster. So that the people that can play can win. Many contestants in Melee and MKDD were bad. Joe won by 20 seconds on DK Mountain, but didn't qualify for the finals. Many people got up there by luck and playing other bad people. We had to drop to 1 stock in teams.
10. comentary at the tournament sucked. You couldn't hear the good people (thanks Noise Makers) and then a bunch of 6th graders wanted to commentate but were horrible.
11. Trouble monkeys win in the clan points for this tournament.(boo hiss)
12. Eli now will assign commentary duties for each event.
13. Eli is going to Pax and will learn how to do the tournament.
14. Debate on which Items and Stages to turn off.

well duck that is basically it. what does klee ee pa doink or what ever mean? i was in that race with joe i could have won but we were teaming up and i didnt want him to get pissed at me. in the middle of the 2nd lap a mastershell hit me and he passed me and we were 1st and 2nd for the rest. u missed the detail where in the elimination round the savage brothers teamed up on me and i still beat them in sudden death lol. also u missed the savage brother's ultimate comeback in the final race of team maio kart where they fell down twice but made first by pure luck. i think we should do that cup thing that is happening in PAX where a group of 8 ppl play a cup and the top 2 scores advance. this would work good if we had 32 ppl.

I have a suggestion for the points system. It seems unfair that when my friend got a 1st and a 4th, he would get more points then my 2nd and 3rd. Theoritically it should have the same value, though if you changed it to this way there would be so many more ties.

There are a few problems with the cup thing. One is people will complain that they got a bad kart and since you don't change karts they will blame the kart. Also characters will be fixed so you might get specials you don't like. I don't like the Chain chomp and would be annoyed if I got stuck with it for all my races. Plus some people might not like that they got stuck playing special cup or something.

yeuhhhh galen won and we are in the clan cup now! and i brought danny frank (new player) and some thing about the cups should be done. like hand out 4 drink coupons to everyone or maybe 3 so people keep track of their cups and dont throw away half drank sodas. we should get john madden to commentate.

that is a very good point snowman BTW who are u? duck the cup idea is only fixed courses not fixed cars and characters. like u know the courses that u will play but u dont know who ur characters aand car are. so u will get 4 random combinations so u can't complain that u got a bad car cuz with 4 chances u should have got at least one decent car by the player's standards. lol joe where are we gonna get john madden and y would he commentate for video games. i forgot danny so that makes 1107 points for referals. we should make this an inter-city thing where Ann Arbor has a team of 5 ppl and Ypsilanti has a team of 5 ppl etc throughout wastenaw county. then the teams compete for the best team in wastenaw. or we can just do the 5 best ppl in each city competing by themselves. u guys wanna do that grand master thing or not?

but what I want to know is if eli is going to keep the low number of races per person, because that feels more luck based then skill based, I know that lowering the amount of races each person gets is all part of allowing for time, but it can be harsh, I mean how can anyone really prove themselves in two races, if something goes wrong in one and you get a 4th place then, how can anyone hope of coming back from a score like that!

I understand your posts muffincat, I said I don't Get the POINTS for bringing you to the tournament.

Actually they can break up the LAN easily; they did it at a little kid's tournament with no hassle (Midtournament). So if we did split screen with two LANs we could do it in an hour.

Sravan I not so sure it will be randomized like that. It sounded like the whole point was to have people not get up and have them race all 4 races right after the other without we doing Characters and carts. Could someone please fill us in.

it should be randimized. all eli has to do is first go into the game by clicking start game then doing Grand Prix, it doesnt matter the characters cuz u wont use them, then he holds L and R to randomize it and give a cup and those 8 ppl will play that cup. then eli backs out of that going to the LAN title menu then click on select game, then he goes down and selects luigi circut for example and then starts the game. i belive i saw this thing in the select game menu saying that u can choose a cup and it will give u a course out of that cup or it may play the whole cup but probably u will have to stick with the same characters. there are other ways of randomizing the cups like bubble gum bubble gum in a dish etc. lol. i wouldnt like racing 4 times in a row i'd rather like race in the 1st then 3rd,5th and 7th. i think we should stop worrying about mario kart and get back to the stages and items banned for melee.

Sravan that is the problem people that get a combo they don't like will complain when they don't win. look at Black Shark.

Plus Melee isn't as problematic as MKDD. It went much faster then MK and if you noticed<em>(yeah right)</em> during Melee no one was sitting in the middle everyone was watching a game.

Now that your in the clan cup Sravan you want to make it so you don't have competion.

lol ur right duck. i was just kidding about the 2-3 clans thing we should have 4 clans. we should just randomize everything except the stages to prevent complaints like from black shark. u guys have to admit melee is more exciting then mario kart. its like fighting as to racing. and in melee there are 4 times as many people playing at once compared to mario kart so its like a-4a. eli to play this song i need a access to the web and some big speakers so it can be really loud. or i could get it off of i-tunes w/e.

No not Mad.
I find Mariokart more fun. It isn't every day you get to play with 7 other people in MK. Melee you can get 4 player at home and have fun, but the tournament is more serious and tense and that kill some of the fun for me.

As for the "play a cup" idea for MK qualification, sounds good, but if we're playing with the same 8 people for all 4 qualifying races (maybe 3 races would be better time wise, but I guess you can't get cup scores then), is there some way we can seed it? I'm not sure how the bracket building works, or if you maintain separate MKDD score totals that could be used for seeding, but doing it randomly you could get some pretty stiff brackets with only 2 advancing <_<.

Also 2 advancing poses some interesting finals, since you can't peg it at 16 moving on, unless you do cap total participation at 64... although, come to think of it, if you do cap it at 64 people/32 teams for each event, there are probably enough people that are just coming for one kind event to make not too too exclusionary.

jlgelinas here how it works. lets say there are 32 ppl playing single mario kart. 8 ppl play each cup. then after the 4 races we accumilate the scores based on grand prix scoring and figure out the top 2 in each cup. then we have 8 players ready for one final elimination race just like we have in the regular tournaments. then they race and the top 4 get into the prize round. seeding has nothing to do with this. everything will be random except the courses.

yea thats what i was trying to say. when u play with ur friends if u lose its like who cares but when u lose to ppl u dont know then u think u suck or something. if we had played out the final 4 ppl in single melee and had it 1v1 i would have sooooooo won. in team melee either us the trouble monkeys2 or the toasted kittens cuz they have flare. flare would have got in the top 4 but he had to play me. if he played someone like corey atwater then he would have won. i use fox and i know tp2 uses marth but which characters do the post and corey atwater use?

Turtle Clan was anti-snowman, Bad Driver, TurtlePerson2, and JFin2000. I heard that there is going to be a new library to replace the northeast branch. Maybe that library will have a larger multipurpose room we could use for the tournaments. Of course it will be a long time before that happens.

(start with 128 people)
What if we did a sort of elimination for single player kart. After the first race eliminate the bottom 4 places.(16 races) (64) Repeat the dropping of the bottom 4 places.(8 races) (32) Then give them 2 or 3 races keep the top 8 and race to see the top 4 who qualify.
This will give us 33 to 37 races total. About 2 hours, but I did this scenario with 128 people. We could also make deeper cuts each round.

I don't like the split screen. I can race split screen at home. The LAN system is one of the best parts of the tournament. Also setting up 2-4 networks could be a little harder than setting up one.

Well we have someone new posting on axis. I take it you aren't a videogame person. Are you suggesting making an academic competition or adding it on to the videogame tournaments?

nobody wants an academic competition we are already going back to school, we dont need more stress. practicing for game tournaments are fun but not for academic tournaments by reading encyclopedias and whatnot.

Ok guys give up on this. look this blog closes next Tuesday at noon (a.k.a. during school) and since I have a computer class right before lunch I can post right before the blog closes.

tp2 that would as u said take too long and we wanna keep each event 1 hour give or take. there is no way we are going to have 128 ppl but it is possible. this also effects muffincat's idea in which we should get more then 2 races to get a point total and i agree with that too. having a huge single elimination bracket is bad because someone might catch a big break and win and they could be the worst player there. if we did 3-4 races that person would probably do good in one and then suck in the rest. tp2 if u were ever at an open play or DDR tournament which i know u were then u saw the 4 tv LAN mode mario kart system set up. then the other 4 tvs were melee, 1080, kirby's air raid, and donkey konga. it wont be that hard to link up 2 LAN systems because if we already did one then the 2nd one is just the same thing. the only thing is the commentary and since each station is 1 tv and there will be 2 ppl on each u have to commentate for both. its not that hard its just like melee commentating on 4 ppl. i am strongly opposed to 4 player split screen cuz one its not convienent with such a small screen for most players and it is extremely laggy.

Oh and also the thing about 144 people being allowed in the room as the maxium number of poeple that the fire code would allow, is blown out of proportion in my eyes, because the library is zoned for a tornado shelter, and of course they want to have the number be so high, I mean would wamt people to die because the fire code wasn't high enough for everone would need to, to take shelter. and besides, you asume that a fire isn't going to happen while a tornado is outside, but in the case of the tournaments, that's different with all the people and potentail game cube explosion, also I would like to see a burning and or exploding game cube.

It was an acting LAN. They broke the connection and we did it so that the 4 on the left were together and the 4 on right were together.

I know you guys called it, but it was fun at the last tounament when I got to try it a little.
and tournaments are fun, but I always feel looked down on cause I'm a girl, like I don't have skill, and I will admit that I still have a lot of practicing to do.
but it's like everone thinks I'm just some person that doesn't know what's going on, I got to get better, so that image will not stay.
but I know thta the post board people don't think that.

duck what can roy and marth do, u mean counter that is like the their best move. no one knows the answer to noah's song anyway not even me. to add on the cup idea if we have like 7 groups of 8 ppl playing mario kart so there is 7 cups. then after all the races we have 7 ppl that will qualify for one final race. then we need one more person so we will have to look at the 2nd place ppl and find the highest score to be a wildcard. if we have a tie between the highest 2nd place score then we will do a tie breaker in baby park. also this makes another melee proposal saying that like groups of 8 we have groups of 8. we have players ABCEDFG and H. ABCD and EFGH are 2 matchups. then we will switch 2 players to make AEGH and BCDF. then we will switch again to have ACDG and BEFH. then switch again to have AEFH and BCDG. after this each player has played everyone else at least once and no more then twice. then we calculate the scores and say we have 9 divisions then we will have to get all the 2nd place people except the person who got 2nd place but got the lowest score compared to all the other 2nd place. then here we will do March Madness. what do u think eli?

I can't do a wavedash with Marth. What is a triangle jump? It has to do with the side B combo. I have been able to do the full combo for ages it just I found something new.

weird marth is the 3rd easiest character to do it with. triangle jump is a delayed version of the wave dash u can say and it doesnt make u move horizontily it makes u go sorta in a triangle. one of marth's side B things is where at the end of the combo he pokes them multiple times doing a lot of damage but not sending them flying. what do u guys think of my idea for the melee tournaments?

Sravan, I told u those lyrics on AIM just a few hours ago. Those r the only 2 lines that I remember from the song. Sravan, his name is Nick, not Mick. His real name is Nick Kern, he goes 2 Tappan Middle School. He is on my clan team. Omid knows him. Nick would be good at commentating because he has played both of these games a lot and knows what 2 say. He's a lot better than me at melee. I dunno about mario kart.

It's the control stick. If you are pushing down for that final B you get the poking one. There is also one where you push up that looks just like the regular one but I think it gives you a little boost in your height. So that Might help in recovery.

U guys know how 2 do wall jump. U know only some characters can do it. I don't remember who else, but I know Young Link can do it. Its the only way u can beat his target test.

Yeah but It is only useful on a few stages in specific stiuations. Mario, Samus, Young Link, Fox, Sheik, Falco, Pichu, and Captain Falcon can all wall jump and no one else.

Duck, the thing you guys are talking about is Roy and Marth's dancing blade combo: The poking one is Side B, Side B, Up B, Down B. Marth's won't send them flying but Roy's will.

Galen After the first side B you can hold it in any of the 3 directions up gives you moves that attack upward, down for low attacks, and side of regular. The finishes are only dependent on what was the last Direction.

Forside is the best place to wall jump. i use it to fake out my opponents to make them think i'm retreating but then i instantly come back. i beat flare once by wall jumping and hitting him. did u guys know that every character technically has a reflector but it doesnt stay like fox or falco's but its sorta like mario's cape. its called a power shielder. one of the bonuses u have to get makes u do this 3 times in one minute and it took me and galen a while to finally master it but we never use it. im missing one frikin trophy and in that trophy u have to get ALL and yes i said ALL the bonuses and i am missing one. its called hammer throw anyone here ever got it before?

ARgh?!?!?!? what is the ann arbor public library thinking? THere should be some academic competition. honestly, it does not have to be much but for the tournament we should get points for correctly answering questions about selected books or something like that. ANd we should get bonus points for having a library card.
