Edward IV granted a royal charter in 1476 still in force protecting the legal rights of the horse fair happening right now and again in October each year in Stow-on-the-Wold.

Gypsies and travellers gather to trade piebald or skewbald cobs, horses they have bred for hundreds of years, catch up with friends and relatives and sell arts and crafts.

Here are a few related items to explore the art and history of these fascinating people:

Django Reinhardt, a virtuoso jazz guitarist part of the French Gypsy culture, Gypsies : Photographs incredible portraits of daily life, Bury me Standing : the Gypsies and their Journey, an account of the hardships faced by Romanian Romany, and The Nazi Persecution of the Gypsies detailing their holocaust.

Ah yes, gypsies!

If you like Gypsies then make sure to tune in to The Learning Channel (TLC) for the new hit "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding." If you find them or their life style interesting then you will probably love this show. In my opinion the show is a little ridiculous.
