Child of the Civil Rights Movement by Paula Young Shelton

by Tahira

Daughter of Andrew Young., Paula Young Shelton captures moments in her life as a child who grew up in a family who played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement. She listened under the kitchen table as plans were made for the march from Selma to Montgomery while Uncle Martin (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) let everyone have their say. She thought “Jim Crow was a big black crow that squawked whenever a black person tried to get a good seat. Cawww, Caww, you can’t sit here.”

Paula Young Shelton captures readers with smooth prose that flow like a rhythmic wave over the heart and swirls with the pride that only a child of the Civil Rights Movement could portray. Water colored illustrations in golden hues capture the message of hope and triumph.

Meet author Paula Young Shelton on Monday, January 17th at 2:00 at the Downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s birthday.

My aunt gave this book to my daughter about a year ago. My daughter was in the fifth grade at the time. We read the book together maybe three times and she reread this book more the ten times. She used " My First Protest " to auditon for Emerson Visual and Performing Arts School, in Gary. She was accepted in both Drama and Dance. Currently, she is studing in the sixth grade as a Drama Major. We are blessed to have recieved this book as a gift but twice as blessed by the book itself. We truly enjoyed reading it and talking about the stories in the book. Thank you for sharing.
